LIMA MOM REMEMBER 4-YEAR-OLD SON
Although he was barely 4 years old, Austin Haver loved to help his mother, to offer to do work around the house or just to make her smile when she seemed down.
The little boy loved his younger sister, Jessica, a girl he always tried to protect and whom he called “Sissy.” Austin was killed Saturday afternoon after a car that was backing out of a parking lot at Speedway on Harding Highway hit him. The man driving the car didn’t see Austin and Austin didn’t see the car backing out.
The family has those fond memories to help them as they plan his funeral arrangements. His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chamberlain-Huckeriede Funeral Home.
“He would always say he was the man of the house,” said his mother, colleen Miller. “He was eager to be helpful. He was a very loving kid.”
Austin learned how to ride a bike without training wheels when he was 3, Miller said, and he spent much of last summer using that new skill. Snow and Head Start also made Austin happy, and the little boy recently got a pair of snow boots he loved to wear.
Before Austin went to bed to prepare for another day of school, he had an important job to do, Miller said. He slept in the same bed as Miller and his little sister slept in a bed in the same room. Austin would start the “good nights,” then Jessica would say good night and then their mother. Next would come, “Don’t let the bed bugs bite.” Last they would say, “See you in the morning.” Before they were done, they made sure they said their “I love yous,” and Miller would rub Austin’s head before he fell asleep.
Austin’s cousin, Beth Hendricks, or “Bebpe” to Austin and Jessica, was with the 4-year-old when he ran out of the car Saturday after it was parked, Miller said. She often baby-sat the brother and sister and was like a second mother to them.
