LYLE E. "GENE" LANDERS, 72, died at 12:47 p.m. Feb. 16, 2004, at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Melrose United Methodist Church. Pastor Robert Parker will officiate. Burial will be in Little Auglaize cemetery, Melrose, with military rites by the Oakwood American Legion and the Ottawa Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Oakwood, where a VFW service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Spencerville
HELEN A. PUTMAN, 89, died the evening of Feb. 14, 2004, at her son's residence in Tucson, Ariz.
She was born Sept. 18, 1914, in Van Wert County to J. Aaron and Susie Iona Runnion Sproul, who preceded her in death. On June 27, 1937, she married
Robert O. Putman, who died July 23, 1987.
Mrs. Putman retired as a clerk from the Spencerville IGA after 10 years. She was a member of Friends Church, Spencerville, and its Women's Missionary Society and had been a Sunday school teacher. She helped with the Prayer Line at WTLW Channel 44.
Survivors include a son, Richard E. (Sandy) Putman of Tucson; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis (Richard) Smith of Edgerton; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, R. Wayne Putman; a grandchild; two sisters, Evelyn Moser and Leora Pitts; and a brother, Albert Sproul.
Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home, Spencerville. The Rev. William R. Abram will officiate. Burial will be in Spencerville cemetery.

Lima
RUTH TEMPEL RIDER, 91, died at 4:45 p.m. Feb. 16, 2004, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 1, 1912, in Lincoln, Neb., to Frederick Montague and Minnie Crees Holmes, who preceded her in death. In 1933, she married
William G. Tempel, who died in 1955. In 1963, she married
Walter K. Rider, who died in 1995.
Mrs. Rider had taught music in public schools in Wapakoneta and Gomer. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, since 1940, where she sang in the choir, served in the vestry and was a member of its St. Agnes Guild. She was a 75-year member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. She had been a member of the American Association of University Women, the Lotus Club and the Etude Club. She had served as a Grey Lady at St. Rita's Medical Center and as a docent at the Allen County Historical Museum. She was a graduate of the University of Nebraska. Her parents immigrated to the United States from England in 1908. She was the youngest of four children. She and her first husband moved to Lima with their two children in 1940. She was an avid bridge player, gardener, traveler and enjoyed numerous activities and interests. She loved music and looked forward to every occasion when she could spend time with her family.
Survivors include a son, William F. Tempel of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter, Joan T. (the Rev. Bruce) McNab of Aspen, Colo.; five grandchildren, Sarah (Jonathon) Legg of El Mirage, Calif., William H. Tempel of Los Angeles, William J. (Elizabeth) Patterson of Ross, Calif.; Robin P. (Walter) Obermeyer of Aspen, Colo., and Thomas A. (Kristi) Patterson of Ross, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren, Ian Legg, Austin Legg, Todd Legg, Felicity Legg, William Patterson, Eleanor Patterson, Graham Patterson, Peter Obermeyer, Ryan Obermeyer, Maxwell Patterson and Margaret Ruth Patterson.
She was preceded in death by three brothers.
Memorial services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church. Father Darwin Ralston will officiate. A private burial will be held at a later date in Woodlawn cemetery.
Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. A reception will follow services in the parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church.

LOUISE B. ROAT, 88, died at 9:20 a.m. Feb. 17, 2004, at VanCrest Health Care Center, Van Wert.
Services will begin at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Alspach-Gearhart Funeral Home, Van Wert. The Rev. Neil Hammons will officiate. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery, Van Wert.

WILLIAM JASON ROBINSON, 76, died at 5:25 a.m. Feb. 17, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 24, 1928, in Purvis, Miss., to Isiah and Vesper Green Robinson, who preceded him in death. On Jan. 4, 1947, he married
Della Mae Gebhard, who survives.
Mr. Robinson retired in 1995 as a metal finisher from Superior Coach/Sheller Globe. He attended First Assembly of God. He enjoyed boating, fishing and camping.
Survivors also include two sons, William A. (Janice) Robinson of Lima and Frank W. (Wendi) Robinson of Glendive, Mont.; two daughters, Cecelia Phillips of Wapakoneta and Jodi (Lewis) Karolyi of Fowlerville, Mich.; a brother, Dexter Robinson of Purvis, Miss.; a sister, Betty (Ed) Angle of Nashville, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ronald and Levon Robinson.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Homes, Lewis Chapel. Pastor Randy Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Bluelick cemetery.

SHIRLEY A. ROUTSON, 62, died at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 13, 2004, at St. Rita's Medical Center.
She was born March 2, 1941, in Huntington, W.Va., to Roy E. and Elizabeth Edwards Fudge Sr., who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Routson had been a painter for Keiffer Construction Co. and had worked at Better Brake Parts. She had attended Lima Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Robert E. Routson of Lima; two daughters, Rhonda R. (Harold) Lumpkins and Kelly L. Routson, both of Lima; a sister, JoAnn Hoskinson of Lima; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James A. Routson; a brother, Roy E. Fudge Jr.; and a sister, Ilene E. Reynolds.
Services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chiles & Sons-Laman Funeral Homes, Shawnee Chapel. The Rev. Terry Brock will officiate. Burial will be in Shawnee cemetery.

Arlington
CARLTON W. STROUSE, 86, died Feb. 17, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center, Arlington.
He was born June 16, 1917, in McComb to Ray H. and Stella Burgoon Strouse, who preceded him in death. On April 14, 1940, in Arlington, he married
Treva G. Bame, who survives.
Mr. Strouse had been associated with his father-in-law in J.G. Bame Implements in Arlington. He also worked as an accountant for Libby, McNeal & Libby, Columbus, and as a manager of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, Findlay, and as an accountant for Ruttman Construction Co., Upper Sandusky. He was a controller for Wilco Inc., Kenton, and Columbus Conveyor Co. and Willyard Erector Co., Worthington, after they acquired Wilco. He retired in 1980 from Wilco. He had also maintained an accounting and income tax service in his home since 1946.
He was a member of Good Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church, Arlington, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, treasurer and financial secretary. He was a member of the Arlington Lions Club, where he served as president, secretary/treasurer and zone chairman; a charter member of American Legion Post 621, Arlington; a member of the Arlington Area Business and Professional Association, where he served as treasurer; a member of the National Association of Tax Practitioners; and a member of American Legion Post 3, Findlay.
He was a graduate of McComb High School. He attended Findlay College, Bliss Business College, Columbus, and night school in cost accounting at The Ohio State University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II serving on a naval destroyer escort in the North Atlantic.
Survivors also include a daughter, Connie S. Strouse of Elida.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph W. Strouse.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Crates Funeral Home, Arlington. The Rev. Steven Ramsey will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery, with military rites by Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad.
