CHESTERHILL -- Bernadine L. Lewis, 67, of Chesterhill, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Oct. 30, 1935, in Clarksburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Denzil and Thelma Jones Stevens. She is survived by a daughter, Marie Bridges.
Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at Bethel Wesleyan Church. Burial will be in Mount Hermon Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are by Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill.

Virgil H. Walraven
Died: Wednesday, March 19, 2003
Age: 81
ATHENS -- Virgil H. Walraven, 81, of Athens, died Wednesday afternoon, March 19, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Jan. 8, 1922, at New England, Rome Twp., he was the son of the late Charles T. and Norma M. Gould Walraven. He retired from Abex Corp. with 28 1/2 years of service, was a guitarist for the band Happy Hollow Boys, attended Rome Canaan High School and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by two sons, Robert E. (Susan) Walraven of Delaware, Ohio, and Larry R. Walraven of Logan; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; six sisters, Loretta Thompson, Garnet Fletcher and June Hall of Athens, Mary Ann Jordan of Trimble, Jean (Arthur) Goeppinger of Mount Vernon, and Shirley (Roger) Thompson of Haydenville; and three brothers, Charles Walraven of Georgetown, Ky., Melvin Walraven and George Walraven, both of Columbus.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his former wife, Esther Calentine Walraven, in 2001; and by a brother, Wilbur.
Services will be conducted on Sunday, at 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by the Rev. William Hunter. Burial will be in New England Cemetery.

Sadie A. Carl

Age: 83
POMEROY -- Sadie A. Carl, 83, of Pomeroy, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Born Sept. 9, 1919, in Middleport, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Hannah Russell Harrison. She is survived by children Virgil and Rodney Carl, and Eva Loraine King. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Carl, and a son, Dwight Carl.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Carleton Cemetery.

Audrie J. Mayle
Died: Tuesday, January 28, 2003
Age: 94
CHESTERHILL -- Audrie J. Mayle, 94, of Chesterhill, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Mark Rest Center, McConnelsville.
Born Aug. 15, 1908, in Cutler, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Hulda Ramsey Mayle. She is survived by five sons, Frank Jr., James, Donald, Gary and Jerry; and a daughter, Martha Mayle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Mayle.
Services will be Saturday, 2 p.m., at Chesterhill United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Chesterhill Cemetery.
Friends may call at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services.
Luther C. Bowles
Died: Monday, January 27, 2003
Age: 74
WILKESVILLE -- Luther C. "Bud" Bowles, 74, of Wilkesville, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home, Wellston.
Born May 25, 1928, in Williamson, W.Va., he was the son of the late Luther A. and Georgia Alice Puckett Bowles. He was retired from CSX Railroad, was a member of Wilkesville United Methodist Church, an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of Knights of Pythias in Jackson, a 1946 graduate of Hamden High School, and a member and past commander of Wilkesville Joseph Freeman American Legion Post 476.
He is survived by brothers Sidney (Catherine) Bowles of Wilkesville and Raymond (Carol) Bowles of Columbus; a sister, Eula Mae Lewis of Richmond, Calif.; eight nieces and nephews, five great-nieces and great-nephews and two great-great-nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane M. Tunneyhill Bowles, on June 3, 1995; and by a niece.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. Kathryn Puckett officiating. Burial will be in Vinton Memorial Park, with military graveside services conducted by Vinton County VFW Post 5299.

Clara Ann Criswell

MIDDLEPORT -- Clara Ann Criswell, 88, of Middleport, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Overbrook Center, Middleport.
Born Dec. 28, 1914, in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late August and Mary Herring Hlad. She is survived by daughters Carol McCullough and Dianna Wilkinson. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Criswell.
Services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Fred Harmon George
Died: Monday, January 27, 2003
Age: 70
RUTLAND -- My best friend, Fred Harmon George, 70, of Rutland, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, after a lengthy bout with leukemia.
He was born March 4, 1932, in Rutland, to the late Earl A. George and Faye Hysell Palmer. He was a rural mail carrier and former employee at Stauffer Chemical in Gallipolis Ferry, W.Va.
He was a member of Rutland United Methodist Church and a four-year U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict, with three years in France. He was a member of Harrisonville Masonic Lodge 411 F&AM, past patron of Harrisonville Order of the Eastern Star 255, a member of the NRA and a member of the National Rural Mail Carriers' Association. He was a graduate of Rutland High School, class of 1950. He will be remembered as a great basketball player and loved everyone.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Avenell Jordan George, of Rutland; four sons, Terry of Rutland, Gary of Wellston, Rick (Robin) of Ewington, and Randy (Kim) of Salem Center; his step-mother, Georgia George of Rutland; two sisters, Sharon (Jerry) Black of Rutland and Janie (Jim) Crace of Forest Run; nine grandsons, three granddaughters and a great-grandson; a special uncle, Billy (Millie) George of Eno; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Bryan; and his grandparents, Washington and Marcella Freed Hysell, who raised him.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Rutland Nazarene Church, with John Chapman and Ron Wood officiating. Burial will be at Salem Center Cemetery, Salem Center.
Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at Birchfield Funeral Home, Rutland.

Juanita D. Gerard

MIDDLEPORT -- Juanita D. Gerard, 76, of Middleport, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Born Oct. 10, 1926, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Merle McManes Estep. She was a former employee of Dutton Drug Store, was a homemaker and attended Victory Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles J. Gerard of Middleport; sons and daughters-in-law Paul and Debbie Gerard of Middleport, and David and Pat Gerard of Ellijay, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law Jane and Dave Rice of Rutland, and Linda and John Casto of West Hamlin, W.Va.; sisters Sarah Waddell and Louise Waddell, both of Minford, and Geneva Ford of New Boston; grandchildren Trisha Knight, Patrick Gerard, Erin Gerard, Drew Rottgen, Trey Rottgen and James Ellis; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Estep and Charles Estep, and two sisters, Margaret Barker and Karis Estep.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Victory Baptist Church, Middleport, with the Rev. James Keesee officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire.

Virginia M. Green

Age: 82
LOGAN -- Virginia M. Green, 82, of Logan, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Lancaster.
She was born Sept. 27, 1920, in River, Ky., daughter of the late Glen and Cinda Brown Brown. She is survived by two sons, Lloyd and Edward L. Green, and two daughters, Betty May and Frances Tucker.
Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at Georges Creek Baptist Church, Lowmansville, Ky. Burial will be in Brown Cemetery, River, Ky.
