Wendell Christy
Died: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Age: 79
STEWART -- Wendell Christy, 79, a lifelong resident of Amanda, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
Born Nov. 13, 1923, in Amanda, he was the son of the late John R. and Clara Crumley Christy. He was a 1941 graduate of Amanda High School, where Wendell and his basketball teammates on the Amanda Black Aces had winning seasons in 1939, '40 and '41. He attended Ohio State University and was called to serve in the United States Army Air Corps in Okinawa from 1944 to 1946.
Following the war, Wendell returned to Amanda to work alongside his father, a founder of The Clear Creek Valley Banking Co. Wendell worked at the bank for 40 years as a cashier, vice president and director. He was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Amanda, where he served as treasurer for 40 years, was a charter member of Amanda Lions Club and American Legion Post 57, a 50-year member of Amanda Masonic Lodge 509, a founding and current trustee of Amanda Clearcreek Alumni Association Endowment Fund, served many years as a board member for Amanda Twp. Cemetery Association and was a member of Pickaway Country Club, where he will leave behind many friends and golf buddies.
Surviving Wendell is his wife of 53 years, Edie Risner Christy; his children, Vickie D. (Tom) Davis of Stewart, Lisa A. (Steve) Miller of Columbus, Philip J. (Amy) Christy of Harrod and Joan C. (Scott) Hall of Dayton; and his grandchildren, Andrea, Ben, Lauren, Alison, Olivia, Alexandra and Miles.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Starling Christy.
Services will be held Monday, 1 p.m., at Taylor Funeral Home, Amanda, with Brandon Woodruff and Pastor Chris Hildenbrand officiating. Burial will be in Amanda Twp. Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Amanda Clearcreek Alumni Association Endowment Fund, in Wendell's memory.
Thurman Clay Judson
Died: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Age: 79
ATHENS -- Thurman Clay Judson, 79, of Athens, died late Wednesday morning, Jan. 15, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 26, 1923, in Glouster, he was the son of the late Cashis and Grace Wyatt Judson. A 1942 graduate of Hollister High School, he was retired from Cotter and Co. in Cleveland and was a member and trustee of Athens Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European Theatre, where he was awarded two Bronze Battle Stars and the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Embrey Judson; a son, Roger (Sharon) Judson of Richfield; a grandson, Adam Judson of Richfield; a granddaughter, Crystal Judson of Middleburg Heights; and sisters, Delores White of The Plains and Doris Mikulich of Hamilton.
He was preceded in death by a twin sister and brother, Pauline and Paul Judson; and a sister, Ethel Roach.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Minister Willard Love officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Earl Kauff
Died: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Age: 19
RACINE -- Earl "Steven" Kauff, 19, of Racine, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, in Pomeroy.
Born Jan. 6, 1984, in Gallipolis, he was the son of Earl "Junior" and Sue Ann Kauff of Racine.
Services will be Sunday, 2 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens.

Charles Rutter
Died: Wednesday, January 15, 2003
Age: 66
MILLFIELD -- Charles "Hop" Rutter, 66, of Millfield, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 15, 2003, at his home.
Born June 16, 1936, in Athens, he was the son of the late Clyde Earl and Bessie Myrtle Glaze Rutter. He was a former employee of the Athens City Water Department, with 28 years of service. He was a member of Jacksonville Eagles and Jacksonville VFW.
He is survived by a special friend, Mary Phillips; five brothers, Bob, Oris "Bud," Earl "Shorty," Larry "Buck" and Glenn "Fooz" Rutter; and three sisters, Janet Porter, Thelma Boyd and Donna "Pug" Allison.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a special friend, Gladys Bobo; four brothers, Duward "John," Curtis, Ora, and Carls "Sheb" Rutter; and two sisters, Wanda "Sis" Kennedy and Judith Robinson.
Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Bill O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.

Alex N. Mowery
Died: Sunday, November 17, 2002
Age: 98
LOGAN -- Alex N. Mowery, 98, of Logan, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center. He was born Dec. 9, 1903, in Marion Twp. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Eileen Rizer Mowery.
Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
William Burns
Died: Saturday, November 16, 2002
Age: 91
ATHENS -- William Burns, a perfect gentleman, died at the age of 91, on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at Raulerson Hospital, Okeechobee, Fla. He was a former Athens resident.
Mr. Burns was born in Youngstown on Sept. 24, 1911. He was a typesetter at McBee's for more than 40 years. He retired at the age of 70, and said retirement was the worst mistake he ever made. He was a dedicated member of St. Paul's Catholic Church for most of his life. He was a shining example of the pure Catholic faith.
Due to health reasons, he and his wife, Gladys, moved to Okeechobee, Fla., in August to be with his daughter, Eve.
Mr. Burns is survived by his dear wife of 67 years, Gladys Wiseman Burns; loving daughter Eve Olson of Okeechobee; son William Jr. of Huntsville, Ala.; sister Gertrude Monahan of Youngstown; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick E. and Catherine Donovan Burns, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Olson, whom he loved dearly until the time of his death.
Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Msgn. Patrick Gaughan officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. where a Vigil for the Deceased will be at 5:30 p.m.
E. Juanita Clark
Died: Saturday, November 16, 2002
JACKSONVILLE -- E. Juanita Clark, 78, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in Columbus.
Born March 8, 1924, in Morgan County, she was the daughter of the late Oscel and Jennie Wade Chappalear.
She is survived by sons Neil, Edward, Steve and Michael Handa and Christopher Bailey.
Graveside services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at East Branch Cemetery, Morgan County.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home in Murray City.
Fannie Marie Coursey
Died: Saturday, November 16, 2002
Age: 91
ATHENS -- Fannie Marie Coursey, 91, of Athens, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born April 21, 1911, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Maude Cosby Harris. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Athens.
She is survived by a son, Clifton H. (Erleen) Coursey of Auburn, Wash.; a granddaughter, Kimberly Marie Coursey of Auburn; brothers James "Bud" Harris and John Harris, both of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Thelma Harris of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton, in 1971; sisters Catherine Buchanan, Virgie Richardson and Kate Freeman; and a brother, Robert Harris.
Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by Pastor Eddie Buffington. Burial will be in West State Street Cemetery.

Myrtle H. Powers

Age: 83
LOGAN -- Myrtle H. Powers, 83, of Logan, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in Lancaster.
Born May 10, 1919, in Union Furnace, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Ellen Shaw Hart. She is survived by sons John, George and Richard Coakley; and daughters Dorothy Jean Davis and Shirley Hopstetter.
Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery.
