Died: Wednesday, August 15, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Robert E. Kerns, 81, of Newark, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark.
Born in Nelsonville, he was the son of the late Wesley and Anna Warren Kerns.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Winchell Kerns; sons David, Charles and Robert Kerns; and daughters Niedy Pace and Sheryl Young.
Services will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, where military graveside services will be performed by the Combined Color Guard Unit.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m.
Jimmie King
Died: Wednesday, August 15, 2001
LONG BOTTOM -- Jimmie Glenn King, 68, of Long Bottom, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2001, at his residence.
Born June 16, 1933, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., he was the son of the late Harold Ray King and Virginia Wamsley King.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Arnold King; sons Michael and Greg King, and Robert and Timothy Lawrence; and daughters Sheila Westfall, Nancy Wilford, Debra Drake, Kathy Francis, Jo Ellen Wolfe and Pamela Pierce.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, 1:30 p.m., at Rocksprings Cemetery in Pomeroy.

Pattie Sonn
Died: Wednesday, August 15, 2001
CHAUNCEY -- Pattie K. Sonn, 48, Chauncey, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
She was born Sept. 3, 1952, in Columbus, daughter of James R. Cornell of Iowa and the late Nancy K. Marx Cornell. She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Sonn; two sons, Angel Sanchez Jr. and James Cunningham, both of Nelsonville; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Tina) Brooks of Trimble and Angelina and Nancy K. Sanchez, both of New Jersey; two stepdaughters, Diana Brooks of Chauncey and Brandy Sonn of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Dave Cornell of Columbus and Keith Cornell; two half brothers, Timmy and Billy Cornell; and three half sisters, Tayna, Kelly and Tammy.
Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by an infant grandson.
Funeral services are Monday at 10 a.m. at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. James McCamish officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield.
Calling hours are today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Julius Waldnig
Died: Wednesday, August 15, 2001
RACINE -- Julius Dutch Waldnig Jr., 95, of Racine, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
Born July 4, 1906, in Austria, he was the son of the late Julius Sr. and Marie Tschakert Waldnig.
He is survived by his wife, Flossie Myrl Smalley Waldnig; a daughter, Pat Moore; sons William and Ted Waldnig; and a stepdaughter, June Levi.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Springfield, with services at 3 p.m.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fisher-Acree Funeral Home, Pomeroy.
Owen Brooks
Died: Tuesday, August 14, 2001
ATHENS -- Owen Otis Brooks, 74, of Columbus, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus.
Born Jan. 1, 1927, in Athens, he was the son of Jennie Secoy Brooks of Athens and the late Jesse Brooks.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Mary; four children, David Brooks and Randy (Margaret) Brooks of Cleveland, and Carol (David) Reeves and Phillip (Kathleen) Brooks of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Goldie Dilly of Chesterhill and Ruth Anderson of Cleveland; four brothers, Pearl (Evelyn) Brooks and Les (Lena) Brooks of The Plains, Arthur (Janet) Brooks of Columbus, and Jesse (Judy) Brooks of Cleveland; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Brooks.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Jim Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.

Thomas L. Rannells
Died: Monday, January 20, 2003
Age: 96
NEW PLYMOUTH -- Thomas L. Rannells, 96, of New Plymouth, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Logan Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 29, 1906, in Swan Twp., Vinton County, he was the son of the late David Vance and Mary Longstreth Rannells.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Timms Rannells, and children Vance, Bob and W.T. "Bill" Rannells.
Services will be Friday, noon, at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.

Bessie Neoma Brooks
Died: Sunday, January 19, 2003
Age: 101
CARBONDALE -- Bessie Neoma Brooks, 101 years old, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Bessie was born on Aug. 11, 1901, in Richmond, Mo., daughter of the late George and Jennie Frank Treadway. She moved to Carbondale when she was 13 years old and lived there the rest of her life. She was the widow of the late Marve Brooks, who passed away on March 20, 1956.
She worked for many years on the elections board and was active at Carbondale Community Center.
Bessie is survived by sons Raymond (June) Brooks and Bill (Elsie) Brooks, both of New Marshfield; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; first cousins Dorothy Frank Terrell of Athens and Hazel Frank Gilson of Peoria, Ariz.; nephews Kris and Joe Wolfe of The Plains; and nieces Patty Denny of New Marshfield and Anna Grace Pidcock of Fairborn.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marve, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Treadway, Louise Adams and Grace Wolfe, and three brothers, John, George and Robert Treadway.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery, Hocking County.

Ray Hashman
Died: Sunday, January 19, 2003
Age: 56
MURRAY CITY -- Ray Hashman, 56, of Columbus, formerly of Murray City, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, in Columbus.
He was the son of Josephine Hashman and the late Irvin Hashman.
He is survived by his wife, Jenny Hashman; sons Joe and Irvin Hashman, Sonny Ray and Jeff Baker; and daughters Kate, Buffy and Geanie Hashman.
Services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at Salem Cemetery, Murray City.

Mary Catherine Starcher
Died: Sunday, January 19, 2003
Age: 90
WELLSTON -- Mary Catherine "Katie" Starcher, 90, of Wellston, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Facility, Wellston.
Born March 7, 1912, in Berlin, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James D. and Minnie Morrison Allman. Katie retired as a case worker for the Jackson County Human Services Department. She was a member of Berlin United Methodist Church, a former clerk for Washington Twp. School Board and a former member of Wellston Senior Citizens.
She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Marilyn Brady of Wellston, Jane and Jack Downard of Wellston, and Catherine and Dane Blamer of Washington Court House; grandchildren Brenda Price, Jeffrey Brady, Jack Michael Downard, Lisa Kay Downard, Andrea Lee Blamer, Susan Rae Blamer and William Cottrell; great-grandchildren Stephanie Connelly, Bryan Hollingshead, Brandi Downard, Corey McLain and Chandler David Manning; great-great-grandchildren Jillian Connelly and A.J. Connelly; sisters-in-law, Thelma Helm of Ironton, Mary E. Morrison of Salem, Va., and Velma Allman of Jane Lew, W.Va.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Swisher F. Starcher, in 1985; and brothers Wade Allman and Howard Allman.
Services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston, with the Rev. Glenn Herman officiating. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.
