Mary Greathouse
Died: Monday, July 1, 2002
LOGAN -- Mary J. Greathouse, 92, of Logan, died Monday, July 1, 2002, in the skilled nursing unit at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born July 28, 1909, in Swan Twp., Vinton County, she was the daughter of the late James Carney and Alta Stuck Johnston. She was the widow of Clifford D. Greathouse, who died in 1997. Mrs. Greathouse was an Ohio University graduate, a 50-year member of OES Sereno Chapter in McArthur and a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Logan.
She is survived by two daughters, Alice Jane Ellison of Logan and Mary Elizabeth Pace of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Maxine Morgan of Leawood, Kan., and Jane Newman of Columbus; and four grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Johnston Greathouse, who died in 2001; and three brothers, Thomas, John and Earl Johnston.
Graveside services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Elk Cemetery in McArthur, with the Rev. Gerald L. Frazee officiating. Burial will follow the service.
Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan on Friday, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Valerie Sabo
Died: Monday, July 1, 2002
MILLFIELD -- Valerie J. Sabo, 45, of Millfield, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Born June 23, 1957, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Delores Kleckner Wankowski and the late Robert Wankowski.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Thomas; two sons, Mike Sabo Wankowski and Greg Sabo; and three stepsons, Bryin Sabo, Tom Sabo and Kenny Sabo.
There will be no services. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens.
Josephine Singer
Died: Sunday, August 26, 2001
THE PLAINS -- Josephine Gidish Singer, 90, of The Plains, formerly of Lorain, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, following an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 26, 1910, in Rossford, and had been a longtime resident of Lorain. She had been a resident of Athens County since the mid-1980s, and of The Plains since 1995.
Mrs. Singer was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church in Athens, and was a former parishioner of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain.
She had been employed as a cook at Miraldi's Restaurant in Lorain, as well as in the dietary department of the former Shields Nursing Home in Lorain. She had also worked for United States Steel Corp.'s Lorain Works, formerly known as National Tube, during World War II. She was a member of the auxiliary of AMVETS Post 47 of Lorain. Her hobbies included bowling, baking, crocheting and gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Masters of Athens; a son, William Singer of Lorain; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven S. Singer, in 1982; by her son, Joseph Senio, in 1925; by daughters, Evelyn Wozniak in 1987, Irene Guenther in 1985, and Blanche Sands in 2000; and by her parents, Joseph and Agnes Hochick Gidish.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, 1:30 p.m., at Calvary Cemetery, 555 N. Ridge Road, Lorain. The Rev. G. Michael Williamson, associate pastor of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, will officiate.
The family suggests memorials in her memory be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 75 Stewart St., Athens 45701.
Arrangements are under the direction of Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel in Lorain.
Lena Williams
Died: Sunday, August 26, 2001
TRIMBLE -- Lena Mae Williams, 53, of Trimble, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at her residence.
Born March 1, 1948, in Buffalo, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank West and Grace Killingsworth West-Hayborn. She was a housekeeper for O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Williams of Trimble; a daughter, Diana Williams of Trimble; brothers Robert (Joann) Wolfe of St. Albans, W.Va., and Glen Wolfe of West Virginia; sisters Deloris Losey of Glouster and Dale Hayburn of Athens; special friends Betty Moore, the Nichols family, Marvin and Freda Laudermilk, Vera McGan and John Exline; a special niece, Patricia Spears; a special nephew, Chris Williams; and a sister-in-law, Sadie Parks.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Williams, who passed away on Feb. 3; brothers Charles and Frank Wolfe; and sisters Dorothy Andrews and Edith Simpson.
Services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City, with Linda Berry officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster.
Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mary Kunzelman
Died: Saturday, August 25, 2001
POMEROY -- Mary Philomena Whitlock Kunzelman, 94, of Lawrenceville, Ga., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at her residence.
Born Dec. 11, 1906, in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Sophia Myer Whitlock.
She is survived by a son, John F. Kunzelman.
Services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pomeroy. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Friends may call at Ewing Funeral Home in Pomeroy tonight from 6 to 8, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30.
Audrey Young
Died: Saturday, August 25, 2001
POMEROY -- Audrey Venoy Young, 90, of Shade, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.
Born July 24, 1911, in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Mary Bentz Venoy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor C. Young Sr. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Justis.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Frances Watkins
Died: Friday, August 24, 2001
McARTHUR -- Frances Frankie Watkins, 78, of McArthur, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at her residence.
Born Dec. 23, 1922, in Paintsville, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Sam and Ella Lee Collins Bowen. She was retired from Ohio University after 17 years of service, and was a charter life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5299 Auxiliary and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 2279.
She is survived by daughters Betty J. Prater (Leonard Perkins) of McArthur, Shelby (Howard) Whitcraft of Albany and Lois Lamb of McArthur; a brother, George Bowen of Lima; eight grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one great granddaughter.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Watkins; a grandson, Brian Prater; a great-grandson, TeJay LeMay; a son-in-law, Jerry Prater; sisters Opal Marie Bowen, Mae Engle, Sylvia Green and Hedy Milam; and brothers Sam Bowen Jr. and Robert Bowen.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with Pastor Carl Radcliff officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with VFW auxiliary services at 8 p.m., and Eagles auxiliary services at 8:30 p.m.
She will remain a precious memory to all who knew her.
Ruth Ann Fuller
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2001
THE PLAINS -- Ruth Ann Fuller, 66, of The Plains, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 8, 1935, in Athens County. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A graveside memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan. Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan.
Irene Garner
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2001
LOGAN -- Irene Garner, 82, a former resident of Jobs Hollow, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Randy Garner, and a son, William Nook Dane.
There will be no services or calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pine Hills activities department.
Mildred McGee
Died: Thursday, August 23, 2001
ATHENS -- Mildred F. McGee, 91, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Kimes Convalescent Center in Athens.
She was retired from R.G. Barry Inc.
She is survived by her sister, Lillian E. McGee; a sister-in-law, Esther McGee; and a nephew, Michael McGee, all of the Athens area.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Columbus.
Arrangements are by Schoedinger Cleveland Avenue Chapel, Columbus.
