Age: 94

GLOUSTER -- Iva Ruth Hanley, 94, of Glouster, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at her residence.

Born Jan. 8, 1909, in Glouster, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Jane Green Smith. She was the widow of the late William Walter Hanley. She was a member of Greens Run Church of Christ and a devoted mother who loved her children.

She is survived by four sons, Myles Hanley of Englewood, Arthur William (Carol) Hanley of Mount Vernon, Wash., Melvin (Mary) Hanley of Lancaster and Dave Hanley of Glouster; five daughters, Norma (George) Moyer of Clinton, Virginia (Ray) White of Gahanna, Ruth Ann (Bob) Stanley of Glouster, Mary Jo Wear of Alburn, Ala., and Carolyn (Bill) Fisk of New Marshfield; 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, a granddaughter, five brothers and a sister.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Gary Hayden
Died: Wednesday, April 30, 2003
Age: 65

BUCHTEL -- Gary Hayden, 65, of Buchtel, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.

Born Sept. 5, 1937, in Buchtel, he was the son of the late John Hayden and Nellie Coakley.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Connie Hayden; two daughters, Lisa (Ron) Reed of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lana (Jim) Pancake of Nelsonville; a son, Darin (Kellie) Hayden of Nelsonville; grandchildren Jill, Marilyn, Spencer, Stephanie and Tommy; brothers Albert Hayden of Nelsonville and Roger (Ruby) Hayden of Buchtel; and sisters Emogene (Chuck) Magley of Grove City and Nancy (Bob) Locke of Alliance.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Edward; brothers John, Willard, Paul Edward and Floyd Hayden; and a sister, Donna Riley.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel, with Pastor Lewis Dunnells officiating.

Benjamin Carl Hayes
Died: Wednesday, April 30, 2003

ATHENS -- Benjamin Carl Hayes, 16-month-old son of Christopher and Michele Karoub Hayes of Athens, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Children's Hospital, Columbus.

Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Peter Michael Hayes.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2 p.m., at Athens First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the March of Dimes, 1500 W. 3rd Ave., Columbus, 43212.

Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Vida Mayle Dalton
Died: Wednesday, April 30, 2003

CUTLER -- Vida Mayle Dalton, 88, of Cutler, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1915, in Cutler, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Viola Mayle. She is survived by a son, Ronnie Dalton, and a daughter, Eloise Norris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry J. Dalton.

Services will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Southland Cemetery, Cutler.

Friends may call at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

David M. Lustgarten
Died: Monday, December 16, 2002
Age: 51

ATHENS -- David M. Lustgarten, 51, of Athens, died Monday evening, Dec. 16, 2002, at Arthur James Cancer Hospital in Columbus.

Son of the late Michael B. and Gilda Marino Lustgarten, he was born Feb. 23, 1951 in Berlin, Germany.

Mr. Lustgarten was self-employed as a carpenter-contractor for more than 30 years. He was a graduate of Balboa High School in Panama and attended Ohio University.

A member of the Alexander High School Athletic Boosters, he coached Alexander Little League Baseball, Athens County Senior Baseball League and was associated with American Legion baseball.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Darlene Moss Lustgarten; a son, Zachary Lustgarten, and a special friend, Katie Moran of Athens; a brother, Robert Lustgarten of Manassas, Va.; father-in-law Jennings Moss of Northfield; sisters-in-law Jennifer Kral of Northfield and Alex MacAninch of Medina; brothers-in-law Neal (Phyllis) Moss of Northfield and Kenneth (Pat) Moss of Bainbridge; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, with Pastor Owen Stotts. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Charles R. Smith Sr.
Died: Monday, December 16, 2002
Age: 85

NELSONVILLE -- Charles R. Smith Sr., 85, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.

Born June 19, 1917, in Canton, he was the son of the late Harry L. and Edna E. Kumper Smith. He was the widower of the late Florence A. Bentley Smith.

Mr. Smith was retired from Wm. Brooks Shoe Co. and was a member of the Lunch Bunch at First United Methodist Church in Nelsonville.

He is survived by a son, Charles R. "Bob" Smith Jr. of Grayson, Ky.; a brother, Harry W. Smith of Canton; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Anderson of Logan and Faye London of Baltimore; a cousin, Ruth (Reed) Windle of North Canton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Interment will be in Connett Cemetery where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Norman Clare Welch Sr.
Died: Monday, December 16, 2002
Age: 85

ATHENS -- Norman Clare Welch Sr., 85, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Columbus.

He was born in Frost on Dec. 17, 1916, to Raymond D. and Lillie Radenbach Welch. After graduating from Rome Canaan High School, he worked at Athens State Hospital as an orderly, where he met and married Ruth Olive Sayers. They celebrated 62 years of marriage on Sept. 21, 2002. They moved to Columbus when he began his career with the New York Central Railroad, retiring as an engineer in 1978. He was a 32nd degree Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite at the Valley of Columbus, a member of the Grove City Blue Lodge 689 and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star 502 in Grove City. He and his family joined Briggsdale United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond D. and Lillie Radenbach Welch; his sisters, Roxie Gaynelle (Warren) Graham and Alta Majorie (Charles F.) Sandusky; and brothers John Maurice Welch and Neil Martin Welch.

He is survived by a sister, Marion Eleanor (John) Sillaman; sister-in-law, Harriet Antle (Neil) Welch; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 62 years, Ruth Olive Sayers Welch; his children, Maureen Kay (Welch) McCathrin, Sharon Lee Wyner Welch, Norman Clare Welch Jr. and Maurice John (Mari Jewell) Welch; and grandchildren Michael Andrew McCathrin, William Lee Wyner, Jacob Matthew Welch, Susan Lynn Wyner, Statia Elaine Welch, Jeffrey Lee Wyner, Erik Nathaniel Welch and Mathew John Welch.

Norman was an avid game hunter, fisherman, beekeeper, gardener, gourmet cook, craftsman, inventor, fiddle player and singer, but mostly a hard-working, devoted husband and father, ever shining in honesty, integrity, uprightness and strength.

His family will receive family and friends at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home officiated by Pastor James Wolfe, with interment in Concord Cemetery, Ames Twp. Masonic services will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home by Paramuthia Lodge 25 F&AM.

James W. Burke
Died: Sunday, December 15, 2002
Age: 58

ALBANY -- James W. Burke, 58, of Albany, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born April 11, 1944 in Cabin Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Dolphus and Hazel Dunigan Burke.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Whittington Burke; a son, Ron (Judy) Burke of Albany; a daughter, Melissa (Todd) Jarvis of Akron; two grandsons, Brady and Weston Jarvis; two sisters, Phyllis (Myrl) Knowlton of Albany and Carol (Roger) Greer of Georgia; three brothers, Donald (Rosemary) Burke of Cincinnati, Roger (Phyllis) Burke of Charleston, W.Va. and Dolphus "Doc" (Wanda) Burke of Albany; his mother- and father-in-law Emma and R.A. Whittington; sisters- and brother-in-laws, Barbara Burke, Maxine Burke and Larry McKinley; and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Hebron, Paul and Bill, and a sister-in-law, Kitty.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be in School Lot Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Foundation.

Willie "Tony" Jones
Died: Sunday, December 15, 2002
Age: 64

TUPPERS PLAINS -- Willie "Tony" Jones, 64, of Tuppers Plains, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in Pomeroy.

Born Nov. 26, 1938, in Freed, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lorine and Curtis Jones.

He was a retired truck driver and a member of Reedsville Fellowship Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Shirley Stover Jones; three daughters and sons-in-law, Diana (Jones) and Steve Mayo of Vienna, W.Va., Connie (Jones) and John Rankin of Tuppers Plains, and Judy (Jones) and Dennis Garrett of Reynoldsburg; an adopted son, Willie; a brother, Junior Jones of Little Hocking; two sisters, Velma and Marie of California; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eliza Meriwether.

Memorial services will be held at Reedsville Fellowship Church of the Nazarene in Reedsville on Tuesday at 6 p.m. with Pastor Teresa Waldeck and Pastor Linda Kuhn officiating. Arrangements are being handled by White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Tony Jones to Reedsville Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, P.O. Box 68, Reedsville, Ohio 45772.
