Robert Elberfeld
Died: Tuesday, March 19, 2002
POMEROY -- Robert Elberfeld, 90, of Pomeroy, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at his home, following an extended illness.
Born June 16, 1911, in Pomeroy, he was the son of the late Jacob Bauer and Katie Mees Elberfeld. He was a graduate of Pomeroy High School and a graduate of Ohio State University, where he was a member of the track team and manager of the basketball team. He also was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity during his college years.
He lived for some time in Parkersburg, W.Va., where he owned and operated Elberfeld's Department Store on Market Street. While a resident of Parkersburg, he was a member of First Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council and as Sunday school superintendent, and also was active with Boy Scouts of America. A veteran of World War II, he was a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy and a member of American Legion Drew Webster Post of Pomeroy.
A merchant by trade and at heart, Robert also was involved extensively in the operations of the former Elberfeld's Department Store in Pomeroy. Robert was a member of St. Lutheran Church of Pomeroy, serving on the council and singing in the choir. He also was a member of Sons of Union Veterans and worked briefly for the Meigs County Historical Society, of which he was a member. He was president emeritus of Elberfeld Farm Inc. of Tuppers Plains.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Charlotte Gibbs Coates Elberfeld; a daughter, Mrs. Scott (Julie Elberfeld) Dillon; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Allan (Nora) Elberfeld of Tuppers Plains, and Mr. and Mrs. Stephan (Beverly) Elberfeld of Gallipolis; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stan (JoAnn) Coates of Canton; two grandsons, Joshua and Bobby Coates of Canton; three granddaughters, Mrs. Jack (Rebecca Elberfeld) Hoge of New Knoxville, Mrs. Mike (Kate Elberfeld) McCormick of Jackson, and Mrs. Joe (Andrea Elberfeld) Swartz of Grove City; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah McCormick and Meta Helen Hoge; two sisters, Mrs. William (Rachael) Downie of Racine, and Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Lytle of Chillicothe; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Karl (Clarice Gibbs) Krautter of Pomeroy, and Mrs. William "Dude" (Sarah Williamson) Gibbs of Pomeroy; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, four brothers and three sisters preceded Robert in death, Jacob Elberfeld of Westerville, Alfred Elberfeld of Pomeroy, Martin Elberfeld of Chillicothe, Earl Elberfeld of Logan, Ima Elberfeld Keller of Darien, Conn., Lydia Elberfeld Siddall of Marietta, and Katherine Elberfeld Slagel of Ironton. His first wife, Betty Renner Deem, also preceded him in death.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Laura Leach Shreffler officiating. Interment will be in Beech Grove Cemetery in Pomeroy, with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Drew Webster Post of Pomeroy.
Friends may call at Fisher Funeral Home in Pomeroy on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Pamela Matheny
Died: Tuesday, March 19, 2002
MURRAY CITY -- Pamela K. Matheny, 52, of Murray City, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va.
Born April 11, 1949, in New Straitsville, she was the daughter of the late William Howard Perrin and Ida Elizabeth Jones Wintermute-Perrin.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Harold F. Matheny; her daughters, April Matheny of Murray City and Selina C. Matheny of Springfield; her grandchildren, Jacob C. Smith of Murray City, and Dalton W. Bartlett of Springfield; her twin brother, Steven Perrin of New Straitsville; brothers Randall A. (Ruth Ann) Perrin and Larry (Ann) Wintermute of New Straitsville, Dean Wintermute of Junction City, and William Perrin of Fultonham; and a sister, Barbara Perrin of Zanesville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Tracey Wintermute.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City, with the Rev. Ernie Perkins officiating. Burial will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery.

Robert Hart
Died: Sunday, March 17, 2002
GUYSVILLE -- Robert Myron Hart, 81, of Guysville, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at St. Joseph Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 9, 1921, in Parkersburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Myron Reece and Mary Alice Hart. He was a retired millwright from the union local in Parkersburg, a Masonic Lodge member and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Norma O'Brien Hart; two sons, Jerry Hart and his wife, Barb, Randy Hart and his wife, Becky, all of Guysville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Thelma Swearington of Belpre.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters.
Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, with the Rev. Edsel Hart officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens.

Richard Haning
Died: Friday, March 15, 2002
ATHENS -- Richard Hough Haning, 69, of Athens, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.
Born Sept. 17, 1932, in Athens, he was the son of the late Clarence H. and Elizabeth Willock Haning.
He was a house painter, working with Harry Mitchell Painting Company. He also was employed with his brother at Haning Tree Service. A lifelong Athens resident, he attended Athens High School and was a U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and John Willison of New England, Jeanette and Carl Smith of Reedsville, Rebecca Haning of Athens, and Angie Haning of The Plains; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Lisa Haning II of Albany and John Haning of West Virginia.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Rowena Haning of Westerville.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Creamer Haning, in 1977; a son, James Haning; and a brother, Robert Haning.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be in Haning Cemetery, Alexander Twp.

Carl Hanson
Died: Thursday, March 14, 2002
ATHENS -- Carl L. Hanson, 85, of Chillicothe, died early Thursday morning, March 14, 2003, in Berger Hospital following an extended illness.
Born May 6, 1916, in Bern Twp., Athens, County, he was the son of the late Roy V. and Clara Davis Hanson. On June 10, 1938, he married the former Phyllis Sheldon, who survives.
Also surviving are a granddaughter, Karla Hanson of Chillicothe; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Thompson of Chillicothe; a sister-in-law, Ruby Hanson of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, George A. Sheldon of Athens; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Chuck and Shirley McMurray, Paul and Betty White, all of Greenfield, and Al and Mary Westlake of Chillicothe.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Carl Frank Hanson; a brother, Charles Lee Hanson; and sisters Flora White and Marie Sheldon.
Carl was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired truck driver for McBee Co. of Athens.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Ware Funeral Home in Chillicothe, with the Rev. Walter E. Diekroger officiating. Burial and military graveside rites will follow, at 2:45 p.m., in Athens Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 11 a.m. until the time of services.
Anne Laufman
Died: Sunday, March 10, 2002
ATHENS -- Anne Laufman, 87, of Athens, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
Born Dec. 15, 1914, in Homer City, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anastasia Kuzemchek Daskivich.
She is survived by her sons, Joel Laufman of Athens and Richard Laufman of San Francisco.
Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Cleveland.
Walter H. Keirns
Died: Tuesday, May 13, 2003
Age: 63
ATHENS -- Walter H. "Tommy" Keirns, 63, of Chauncey, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus.
Born May 7, 1940, in Athens County, he was the son of Joretta Keirns, who resides at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains, and the late Walter F. "Tom" Keirns. He was a paraplegic for 41 years. Mr. Keirns was a member of the Methodist Church, Athens Elks and Albany Masonic Lodge, and a social member of Chauncey AMVETS.
Besides his mother, he is survived by two brothers, John Ervin Keirns and Denver D. Keirns, both of Millfield; three sisters, Barbara Ellen Griffith of Los Angeles, Calif., Beverly M. Lucas of Athens and Lucy D. Behm of Chauncey; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Bill Smith of California and Brenda Nelson of Coolville.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Jessie Lee and Billy Joe Keirns.
Services will be Saturday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Bill O'Brien officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.

LOGAN -- Mary M. Thompson, 82, of Logan, died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, in Logan.
Born May 28, 1920, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Walter A. and Esta E. Zinn Hill. She is survived by sons Willis, John Lester, Robert and Edwin Thompson, and daughters Judy A. McWilliams, Linda Thompson and Nancy Hopkins.
Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Smith Chapel Cemetery, Logan.

Born May 27, 1925, in Columbus, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Rose Hartley Hager.
Services will be Thursday, 7 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens.
