ALBANY -- Maurice Townsend, 76, of Wooster, formerly of Dundas, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Wayne County Care Center, Wooster.
Born May 3, 1927, in Vinton County, he was the son of the late Judson and Mae Queen Townsend.
He is survived by a brother, Bundy Townsend of McArthur, and by several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Mittie Irene Townsend, Westina Mae Thompson and Marguerite Matheney.
Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with the Rev. Rufus Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Temple Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Helen Louise Adams
Died: Saturday, May 10, 2003
Age: 67
LOGAN -- Helen Louise Adams, 67, of Logan, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Logan Health Care Center.
Born July 23, 1935, in Matewan, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Stewart and Charity Stepp Osborne.
Services will be Wednesday, 8 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until the time of services.
Earl E. Rush
Died: Saturday, May 10, 2003
Age: 48
GLOUSTER -- Earl E. "Red" Rush, 48, of Columbus, formerly of Glouster, died recently at his residence.
Born Nov. 24, 1939, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Charles and Ressie LaFollette Rush.
Services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Glouster United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hollister Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Doris I. Brown
Died: Saturday, May 10, 2003
Age: 72
ATHENS -- Doris I. Brown, 72, of Athens, passed away late Saturday evening, May 10, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Glen and Dorothy Buck Coen. She was a 1949 graduate of Rome-Canaan High School, a member of Athens Church of Christ, a former employee of Amesville School, and worked for Sears for 23 years and for Ferd Hack as an associate with her husband, Robert.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughters Linda (Steve) Dillinger of Athens, Kathy (Brian) Lackey of Stewart and Cindy (Dave) Glass of Sharpsburg; grandchildren Kristan (Jeremy) Snedden of Guysville, Leah Lackey of Stewart, Anna Montle, Letitia Glass and Emily Glass of Sharpsburg; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Scott Dillinger; a son-in-law, Mike Montle; sisters Hildreth Grigsby and Betty Sayre; and brothers Richard and Elmo Coen.
Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by ministers Willard Love and Scott Trobough. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m.

Wilbert Brice Roberts

HOCKINGPORT -- Wilbert Brice Roberts, 76, of Hockingport, died Friday, May 9, 2003, at his residence.
Born Feb. 16, 1927, in Spencer, W.Va., he was the son of the late Frank and Etta Mowrey Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Lucy Roberts; and his children, Ronzel Roberts, Dale Roberts, Kenny Roberts, Loretta Smith, Dian Bise and Tina Matheny. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry Roberts.
Services will be today, 1 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery, Hockingport.

Norma Scurlock

WELLSTON -- Norma "Jean" Scurlock, 56, of Wellston, passed away Friday, May 9, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis after and extended illness.
Born in Jackson County on Aug. 29, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Norman C. Meadows and Virginia Skeens Meadows Cartee.
Jean was a loving wife and mother. She retired from the Kroger Company after 20 years service and was co-owner of Mike and Jean's BP Station in Wellston.
She is survived by James Michael Scurlock, her loving husband of 19 years; daughter and son-in-law Teresa and Charlie Denney of Wellston; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Dottie Jones of Wellston and Mike and Kelly Jones of McArthur, as well as grandchildren Freddie McCumber, Jeremiah James Michael Jones and Emily Kathryn Jean Jones.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston, with the Rev. A.B. Maloy officiating. Burial will be in Hamden Cemetery.
Calling hours will be at the funeral home, Monday, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

HAYDENVILLE -- Sonia Jean Kline, 79, of Haydenville, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.
Born April 15, 1928, in Buchtel, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Summerfield and Katherine Hopstetter Mills.
Services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Beverly J. Sams

ATHENS -- Beverly J. Sams, 58, of Athens, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday evening, May 8, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 18, 1944, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Rosemarie Ewing Meyers. She was a 1962 graduate of Evanston (Ill.) High School.
She is survived by her husband, Ken; a son, Richard Sams of Athens; and a sister, Linda Winstrom of Barrington, Ill.
Services will be held Sunday, 8:30 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, conducted by Msgr. Patrick Gaughan.

Ruth Steed Jones

Age: 94
ATHENS -- Ruth Steed Jones, 94, of Westlake, formerly of Athens, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2003, at Bradley Bay Health Center, Bay Village, following a one-year illness.
Mrs. Jones was born June 30, 1908, in Zanesville, and has lived in the Cleveland area since 1997. She was a homemaker, a 1927 graduate of Chillicothe High School, was active in many clubs and circles in Athens and was a glass and antique collector. She enjoyed playing bridge.
Mrs. Jones is survived by a son, Robert Jones III, and his wife, Betty, of Bay Village; eight grandchildren, Kim Garrison, Kelley LaPlace, Barbara Crow, Todd Jones, Sharon Girardi, Jordan Jones, Jan Tripp and Andrea Jonethis; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband of 68 years, Robert H. Jones Jr., who passed away in 1995, she is preceded in death by a son, David L. (1984); brothers Donald and Edward Steed; a sister, Hilma Richcreek; and her parents, Clarence L. and Myra L. Burge Steed.
A graveside service will be held a later date in Concord Cemetery, Londonderry. Cremation is by Busch Crematory. Arrangements are by Busch-Burmeister Family Chapel, Avon. Memorials may be forwarded to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 3000 E. 185th St., Cleveland, 44119.
Una M. Brown

Age: 78
McARTHUR -- Una M. Brown, 78, of McArthur, died Thursday, May 8, 2003, at her residence.
Born March 31, 1925, in Eureka, Mont., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Elsie Moore Woods.
She was a homemaker and a former employee of Vinton County Senior Citizens.
She is survived by her husband, Ernie G. Brown; daughters Sue Brown and Pam Scheerschmide, both of McArthur; sons Roger (Avonell) Brown of Hendersonville, N.C., and Bruce (Sandra) Brown of McArthur; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.
At Mrs. Brown's request, her body was cremated. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.
