Van Buren Hamilton

Age: 73
BUCHTEL - Van Buren “Martin” Hamilton, 73, of Buchtel, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
He was born May 14, 1930, in Harlen County, KY., the son of the late Eugene and Grace Lewis Hamilton. He was retired from Ohio University.
He is survived by a very special niece and nephew, Sharlene and Terry Rose and a loving granddaughter, Amanda Rose, all of Nelsonville; a son, Ricky Hamilton, of Virgie, Ky.; a special friend and companion, Helen Lowery of Nelsonville; a sister, Lucille Bryant of Virgie, Ky.; four brothers, Larry and Wanda Hamilton, Paul and Kathy Hamilton, Elbert and Betty Hamilton, all of Jonancy, Ky., and William Doc and Peggy Hamilton of Fort Wayne, Ind. and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Ray Hamilton and Curt Hamilton and a sister, Pauline Jacques.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville with Tim Nelson officiating. Interment will be at Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel. Friends may call today from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Cecil McGlothin
Died: Sunday, December 14, 2003
Age: 74
UNION FURNACE - Cecil McGlothin, 74, of Union Furnace, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at the Ohio State Medical Center, Columbus.
Born Oct. 17, 1929, in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Harry and Alma Grate McGlothin.
He was married to Betty Sheets McGlothin, who survives.
Services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Coonville Holiness Church. Entombment will be at New Fairview Memorial Gardens, Rockbridge.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Lee R. Cates
Died: Saturday, December 13, 2003
Age: 75
ZALESKI - Lee R. Cates, 75, of Zaleski died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, in Brownsville, Texas.
Born Aug. 14, 1928, in Shawnee, he was the son of the late George and Catherine Hansel Cates.
He was a pilot for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, retiring in 1993 after 28 years of service. He was a member of St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Zaleski, a musician who played all stringed instruments, a member of the Vinton County Lions Club and the Ohio Valley Woodcarvers Club and a WWII Navy Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine “Kelly” Williams Cates; sons, Lee (Sharon) Cates Jr. of McArthur and Robert (Kathy) Cates of Largo, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kelly (Benjamin) Myers of Athens and Scott (Kelly) Cates of Chillicothe; three great-grandchildren, Adam and Emily Myers and Sidney Cates; a sister, Nona Yockey of Shreve; and brothers, Jerry (Jo) Smith of Georgia and Kenneth Cates of Oklahoma.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Zaleski with the Rev. Father David Gwinner officiating. Burial will be in St. Sylvester Cemetery with military graveside services by Vinton County VFW Post 5299. Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.
Aubra R. Bailey
Died: Saturday, December 13, 2003
Age: 88
TUPPERS PLAINS - Aubra R. Bailey, 88, of Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, in Zephyrhills, Fla.
He is survived by his daughters, Donna (Jan) Parker of Tuppers Plains, Audra (Dennis) Bulin and Jean Stout, all of Zephyrhills; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one brother; three sisters; and a close cousin, Dick Bailey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Ruth Bailey in October of 2000.
Mr. Bailey was born April 1, 1915, to Lawrence and Florence (Ray) Bailey. He was a dairy farmer, coal miner and heavy equipment operator for road construction.
Orletta McDonald
Died: Saturday, December 13, 2003
Age: 70
ROSEVILLE- Orletta McDonald, 70, of 7722 Fultonrose Rd., Roseville, formerly of Buchtel, died at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born Nov. 14, 1933, in Buchtel, she was a retired employee of Roseville Middle School and a member of the Church of the Atonement of Crooksville.
She is survived by her husband, Richard McDonald of the home; three daughters, Debra (Dana) Tom of Chandlersville, Nanette and Shawna McDonald of the home; a son, Kenneth (Rebecca) McDonald of Roseville; three grandchildren, Matthew and Luke McDonald and Dalton Tom.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Lillie Mae Langley Burgess; and a son, Richard “Carkey” McDonald.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Gobel Funeral Home, 36 N. Buckeye St., Crooksville. The rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday with Fr. Frank Stanton as celebrant at the Church of Atonement. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Roseville. Memorial contributions may be made to Genesis-Hospice or the charity of one’s choice.

Charles Smith

REEDSVILLE - Charles Smith, 65, of Reedsville, died Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at Pleasant Point Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant, W.Va.
Born Dec. 18, 1936, in Reedsville, he was the son of Thelma Barber Smith, of Middleport, and the late Ervin Smith. Besides his mother, he is survived by a brother, Delbert Smith.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Bennett.
Charles was cremated, and there will not be any services. Arrangements are by White Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville.
Ernestine Young
Died: Friday, December 12, 2003
Age: 73
LOGAN- Ernestine “Teen” Young, 73, of Logan, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2003, at her residence in Logan.
She was born Jan. 4, 1930, in Athens County, the daughter of the late George Ernest and Gertrude Alice Briley Smith. She was married to William E. Young for 49 wonderful years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003, at the Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan, with Pastor Kenny Kidd officiating. V.F.W. Auxiliary services will be performed at 10:30 a.m. the day of the funeral. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the services on Tuesday. In fulfilling Ernestine’s wishes, her body will be donated to the Ohio University Osteopathic Medical College upon completion of the funeral services.

Manda L. Eastman
Died: Friday, December 12, 2003
Age: 95
POMEROY- Manda L. Eastman, 95, passed away early Friday morning at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center in Pomeroy, where she had been a resident for the past seven years.
She was born Oct. 4, 1908, in Meigs County, the daughter of the late Claude and Flora (Gilkey) Hayes. She graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1928 and also attended and graduated from Ohio University.
Mrs. Eastman was a retired school teacher who had taught in several one-room schoolhouses, as well as substituted up through the 1950s.
She was well known in the community for her dramatic flair which included many plays, skits and recitations. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church of Middleport until she was no longer able to attend. She was an outstanding woman, a beloved mother and a compassionate grandmother who will be fondly remembered.
Mrs. Eastman was preceded in death by her first husband, Otto Vaughn Sauters; her second husband, Wilber Alfred Eastman; brothers, Harold, Garold and Pearl Hayes; sisters, Margery Douglas and Lena Hayes; half-sister, Lora Hall; and a great-grandson, Casey Sauters.
Surviving are her three children, V. Leroy Sauters, E. Leon Sauters and Theresa Shaffer, all of Pomeroy; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Home in Pomeroy with the Rev. Steve Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Burlingham Cemetery.

Robert D. Mouw
Died: Friday, May 23, 2003
ALBANY -- Robert D. Mouw, Albany, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 23, 2003, at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton.
He was born July 2, 1935, in Orange City, Iowa, the son of Bert J. and Hermina Mouw. A graduate of Montevideo High School in Minnesota, he also graduated from Northwestern College, Air Force Institute of Technology with degrees in aerospace and mechanical engineering. He received an education degree from University of Houston and attended Victoria College and Del Mar. He was a retired major from the U.S. Air Force, which included a tour in Vietnam as a combat pilot, earning him a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He retired from the Calhoun Co. Independent School District of Port Lavaca, Texas. He most recently farmed in Albany, and was a member of Albany Baptist Church.
He survived by his wife, Evonne K. Mouw; three children, Daniel Robert (Melinda) Mouw, Janna K. Mouw, Nelva G. (Oscar) Ramos (child of the heart); grandchildren Preston Scott Mouw, Corinne Kathryn Mouw and Christian Ramos; three sisters, Marilyn Kluver, Shirley (Marvin) DeHoogh and Charlotte( Bernard) Rens.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Scott D. Mouw, and an infant brother and sister.
Services will be today, 2:30 p.m., at the Albany Baptist Church, with Pastor Bert Christian officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, with military graveside services by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion Honor Guard.
No calling hours will be observed. Arrangements are by Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Albany Baptist Church Missions.
