Steven Ray Barker
Died: Saturday, October 19, 2002
Age: 50
NELSONVILLE -- Steven "Steve" Ray Barker, 50, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his residence.
He was born May 12, 1952, in Fairmont, W.Va., the son of the late Ray Barker and Louise Revels Barker Murphy. He was married to Donna Faye Kasler Barker of Nelsonville. He attended the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard (Shannon) Brooks; three daughters, Christina, Pam and Kathy; five brothers, Shirley (Dawn) Murphy of Chauncey, David (Dora) Revels of Marietta, Jeffrey (Jody) Murphy of Buchtel, Robert Barker and Ray Barker, both of West Virginia; three sisters, Brenda Darnell and Mellisa Murphy, both of Georgia, and Virginia Murphy (Michael Boivin) of Columbus; a special cousin and friends Karen and Chuck Fletcher of Nelsonville; and friends Vic and Jackle Mayles of Chauncey.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Barker, and a grandson, Drew Brooks.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. King Kelly officiating. Interment was in New Fairfield Memorial Gardens in Rockbridge.
Ricky Allen Green
Died: Saturday, October 19, 2002
Age: 38
THE PLAINS -- Ricky Allen Green, 38, of The Plains, died Saturday afternoon at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, after a brief illness.
Son of Eva Green Kelley and Jan Kovalcik of The Plains, he was born Nov. 1, 1963, in Warren.
Ricky was employed at ATCO Sheltered Workshop for 15 years. He was a 1985 graduate of Beacon School, a member of the Powerhouse Christian Church in Lancaster, and an active participant in the Special Olympics. He loved to camp and he loved fishing.
It is said of Ricky that he never met a stranger and enjoyed helping others. He will be sadly missed by many.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, George Anthony Kelley of The Plains; an aunt, Linda Nelson of Athens; an uncle, Daniel Green of Wake Forest, N.C.; a great-aunt, Lena Green of Oak Hill, W.Va., and cousins Heather Nelson, Daniel Nelson, Marilyn (Troy) Hyatt, Shelia Dickens, William Hyatt, Shelley Nickolson, and Sarena Hope and their families; a special friend, Eddie Leinbaugh; and special friends, the staff and residents of Buckeye Community Services Hartman Road Home.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Julius and Evelyn Green and G.A. Kovalcik; a brother, Jimmy Green; a great-aunt and -uncle, Hazel and Andrew Williams; and a cousin, Carol "Tootsie" Williams.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home by Pastor George Petrovan, with burial in Hollister Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.
Leona Della LaHugh Smith
Died: Saturday, October 19, 2002
Age: 105
CHAUNCEY -- Leona Della LaHugh Smith, 105, of Chauncey, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Kimes Convalescent Center, Athens.
She was born Oct. 21, 1897, in Carbondale.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel E. LaHugh; and her second husband, Lee Smith.
She is survived by a son, Charles (Bonnie) LaHugh of New Marshfield; a daughter, Mary Lou Triplett of Chauncey, with whom she lived the past 10 years; 13 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and special friends Betty Johnson and Carolyn Burton of Chauncey.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Samie LaHugh; a daughter, Lucille Goins; grandsons Gillian Goins and Richard Goins; great-grandsons William Tippie and Jason Tinkham; a son-in-law, Dale Triplett; and a nephew, Charles Cullison.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with Rev. Bill Hunter officiating. Interment will be in Zion Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in The Plains.

Harold D. Proctor

NEWS STRAITSVILLE -- Harold D. Proctor, 64, of New Straitsville, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at his residence.
He was born July 15, 1938, in Gore, son of the late Clarence and Arie Williams Proctor.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Caradars Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Groe Cemetery.

SYRACUSE -- Shirley A. Willis, 56, of Syracuse, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Born Dec. 21, 1945, in Columbus, she was the daughter of Goldie Hall of Circleville and the late Byron Wayne Hall.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Willis; two daughters, Lisa Nelson and Julie Lochard; and two sons, Robert Willis Jr. and Bo Willis.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Freda M. Carpenter

Age: 76
PORTLAND -- Freda M. Carpenter, 76, of Portland, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at her residence.
Born Sept. 26, 1926, in Portland, she was the daughter of the late Eber H. and Iva Durst Carpenter.
Memorial services will be conducted at a later date. Burial will be in Stiversville Cemetery.

Artenia Jenkins Bowman
Died: Friday, October 18, 2002
Age: 91
MURRAY CITY -- Artenia Jenkins Bowman, 91, of Murray City, formerly of Columbus, died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Arcadia Acres Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 26, 1911, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Blanche Green Hoffman.
She was a retired cook at Harding Hospital, Columbus.
She is survived by a son, Jack M. (Irene) Jenkins of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren MiMi (Robert) Pancake, Shane (Karen) Lanning and Richard Lanning, all of Murray City, Teena (Ben) Blackburn of Carbon Hill, Bella (Gary) Beal of Woodbridge, Va., Linda Windle of Columbus, and Edward and Marvin Jenkins, Jackie Sanchez and Chris Mancillas, all of Arizona; 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Ben Swartz; daughters Wanda L. Lanning and Bonnie June Windle; sisters Vivian Archer, Frances Littlejohn and Violet Currens; and a brother, Austin Hoffman.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Murray City, with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Ray Lloyd Collett
Died: Thursday, October 17, 2002
Age: 86
ATHENS -- Ray Lloyd Collett, 86, of Athens, died Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 2002 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains, after an extended illness.
The son of the late Joe and Flora Harshe Collett, he was born Oct. 27, 1915, in Sharpsburg, Bern Twp. Mr. Collett was a salesman for Broughton's Dairy for 30 years. He had also worked at Rauch's Bakery, Ohio Valley and Holsum Bakery. He retired in 1981 from the Ohio University maintenance department.
He attended school at Amesville and was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church. A resident of Columbia Avenue since 1952, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by a wife, Sara A. Stanley Collett, whom he married on June 26, 1938; daughters Barbara (Larry) Calendine of Athens, Margene Collett of Long Beach, Calif., and Yvonne (Robert) Beckley of Clinton; a grandson, Steve Calendine of Florence, Ky.; and great-grandchildren Ashley and Nicholas Calendine of Florence, Ky.
Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Helen and Blanche North.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel, with burial in West Union Street Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 3477 honor guards.

William Dublin
Died: Monday, June 24, 2002
WORTHINGTON -- William Westfall Dublin, 81, died early Monday morning, June 24, 2002, in Athens.
Born June 28, 1920, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert and Naomi Stover Dublin. A graduate of Altoona High School, he was a Marine veteran who served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Formerly an A&P grocery chain supervisor in Southern Ohio, he retired from Worthington school system, where he was a bus driver.
He is survived by daughters, JoAnn (Tom) Ball and Joyce (Dennis) Cade of Athens, and Beth (Ron) Tauchen of Sun Prairie, Wis.; grandchildren Tom Ball Jr. and Kendra Cade of Columbus, Ellen Ball and Summer McCoy of Athens, Sarah Tauchen and Laura Tauchen of Sun Prairie; and great-grandchildren Austin McCoy and Breanna McCoy of Athens.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1998; and brothers Donald, Vernon and Warren Dublin.
A memorial service will be held July 5, at 1 p.m., at Christ Lutheran Church in Athens.
