Patricia Coey Arnett
Died: Thursday, December 25, 2003

GLOUSTER - Patricia Coey Arnett, formerly of Glouster, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, in Georgia as a result of cancer.

She was born June 10, 1943 in Glouster to Willard and Juanita Coey.

She is survived by her husband, William Arnett; her children, James Shifflet Jr., Warren Irwin Jr. and Vivian (Penny) Kaschak; her mother, Juanita Pierce Coey; siblings, Wavelene Snyder, Jean Coey, John Coey and Linda (Joe) Spaulding; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial was held Monday by The Creation Society of the South in Smyrna, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations in her memory be made to the American Cancer Society, 1825 Barrett Lake Blvd., Suite 280, Kennesaw, GA 30144. Or call 1-800-227-2345. An account has been set up and the American Cancer Society will mail cards to the family.

Ruth E. Hartley
Died: Saturday, December 20, 2003
Age: 96

THE PLAINS - Ruth E. Hartley, 96, of The Plains, died early Saturday morning, Dec. 20, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.

She was the daughter of the late Jess and Eva Linton Atkinson, born Nov. 7, 1907, in Dover Twp.

Mrs. Hartley was a school teacher and retired from Athens City Schools after 34 years of service. She was a 1926 graduate of Chauncey Dover High School and a 1933 graduate of Ohio University.

A member of the Chauncey Christian Church, where she was a financial secretary for the church and Sunday school, The Friendly Circle Senior Citizens Club and a life member of the Ohio and Athens County Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by a son, Lewis (Ann) Hartley of Yorktown, Va.; grandsons, Douglas (LeAnn) Hartley, Neil (Angie) Hartley and Bryan (Sally) Hartley; a granddaughter, Meghan Hartley; sister, Irma Babson of Vermillion; eight great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Hartley in 1984, and two sisters, Eleanor Powell and Frances Hintz.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Steve Bentley with burial in Memory Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Donna Eileen Williams
Died: Saturday, December 20, 2003
Age: 74

JACKSONVILLE - Donna Eileen Williams, 74, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.

Born July 30, 1929, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Eldon and Louise Jewell Daugherty. She was a member of the American Legion Auxilliary in Murray City and a lifetime member of VFW 9866 in Trimble Township.

Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, Thomas (Jacque) Williams of Glouster; daughters, Barbara (Melvin) Kasler of Glouster, Linda (John) Smathers of Trimble, Donna Jo (Larry) Richmond of Jacksonville, Judy (Jack) Hogsett of Trimble, Carletta Williams and Tina Williams, both of Jacksonville; 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lula Mae Campbell of Glouster, Anna (Jay) Chapman and Dee Cook, both of Jacksonville; special friends, Betty Slay, Charlie Exline and Bill (Goldie) Herbst, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Williams, who passed away May 13, 1988, and a grandson, Chad Kasler.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City with William Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, New Addition, in Nelsonville. Friends may call tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A VFW memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

William B. Miller
Died: Saturday, December 20, 2003
Age: 73

NELSONVILLE - William B. Miller, 73, of Nelsonville died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Doctors Hospital in Nelsonville.

Born Dec. 22, 1929, in Mt. Herman, La., he was the son of the late Bosa and Marie McClendon Miller.

The retired U.S. Army veteran formerly worked for Columbia Gas and was a member of VFW post 3467 and a member of the Color Guard.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginian Suver Miller; sons, Gary (Cheryl) Miller of Whitehall, Glenn (Emma) Miller of Kiana, Ala., and David (Dee) Miller of Reynoldsburg; a daughter, Diane (Bo) Kendall of Tok, Ala.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all.

A graveside service will be held. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by the Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. A military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard.

Margaret L. Bowles
Died: Friday, December 19, 2003
Age: 96

MIDDLEPORT - Margaret L. Bowles, 96, of Middleport, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Mount Carmel Medical Center East, Columbus.

Born March 15, 1907, in Middleport, she was the daughter of the late Arlena Reese.

She is survived by children, Arlene E. King, Barbara Setzer, James Bowles, Olivia Lockett, Randall Bowels, Jeannie Gross, Anita Bowles and Marsha Martinez.

Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Bowles.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Middleport. Burial will be in Middleport Hill Cemetery.

Jane C. Baker
Died: Friday, December 19, 2003
Age: 86

ATHENS - Jane C. Baker, 86, of Athens, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Kimes Nursing Center in Athens.

She was born in Moor, Pa., on Feb. 9, 1917, daughter of the late Harry and Edna Carr. She was a graduate of Shaw High School in East Cleveland and lived for many years in the Cleveland area, where she and her husband, Donald, raised their two daughters, Susan and Beverly.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald L. Baker of Athens; her daughter, Beverly Stanek of Linesville, Pa.; grandchildren, Carol Abdella and Jennifer Toth, both of Athens, and Paul Gleason of Columbus; and great-grandchildren, Lauren and Sarah Abdella and Quinn Gleason.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Gleason of Athens.

Marjorie Walker
Died: Friday, December 19, 2003

ATHENS - Marjorie Walker of Athens died Friday afternoon, Dec. 19, 2003, at Doctors Hospital, Columbus.

Born May 6, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Fred S. and Nellie Elizabeth Walters Wheaton.

Mrs. Walker was a graduate of Athens High School and Ohio University. She taught art in Ashland and second grade in Elgin, Ill., for 17 years and seven years in The Plains.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Athens, Circle Two Methodist Women’s Missionary Guild, Pi Beta Phi Sorority where she was active Chapter Advisor, AFAN, Amere Club, Athens County Historical Society and Delt Phi Delta.

Mrs. Walker and her husband, Lee, enjoyed 25 years of involvement with their Haviland China business and belonged to several bridge clubs, both mixed and ladies.

In addition to her husband, Lee J. Walker, she is survived by five children, Barbara (Bob) Uhlman of Chesterhill, Mo., Craig (Darlene) Von Behren of Gibsonia, Pa., Grant Von Behren of Athens, Richard Walker of Brighton, Mich., and Therese Walker Farcas of Athens; nine grandchildren, Robin Corey, Elizabeth Ford, Kathryn, Sarah and Drew Von Behren, Darian and Amanda Walker, and Justin and Rachel Farcus; and a brother, Fritz (Gene) Wheaton of Athens.

Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Robert Wheaton.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home by the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel with burial in West Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Valerie Grace Russell
Died: Friday, December 19, 2003
Age: 85

LOGAN - Valerie Grace Russell, 85, of Logan died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, in Logan.

She was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Columbus.

She is survived by her daughter, Lillian Puterbaugh.

Services will be Monday, 2 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Forest Rose Cemetery, Lancaster.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from noon to 2 p.m.

Susan Joyce Weaver Barnett
Died: Friday, December 19, 2003
Age: 49

LOGAN - Susan Joyce Weaver Barnett, 49, of Logan, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, in Columbus.

Born Sept. 25, 1954, in Chillicothe, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Weaver Jr. and Patsy Tanner Weaver.

She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Richards, Elizabeth Skinner, Naomi Barnett and Chrystal Malone; sons, Lafe Barnett and Brandon Reed; and her fiancé Malachi Reed of Logan.

Services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at the Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Rockland Cemetery, Belpre.

Friends may call Monday, 4 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
