Died: Friday, December 19, 2003
Age: 60

LOGAN - Nancy A. Cozad, 60, of Logan passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Lancaster.

Born March 19, 1943, in Murray City, she was the daughter of Adrian Ferrell Withem of Nelsonville and the late Lewis Withem.

She is survived by three sons, Dwight “Sonny” (Lorie) Cozad Jr. of West Rushville, Patrick Cozad of Lancaster, Kelly Cozad of London; one daughter, Tammy Barrow of Logan; 10 grandchildren; three brothers, Danny Withem of New Straitsville, Denny Withem of Nelsonville, Dale Withem of Carbon Hill; and one sister, Forrest Strausbaugh of Murray City.

She is preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy Cozad; two sisters, Doris Whitmore and Joyce McDonald; and one grandson, Cory Cozad.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. At the request of Mrs. Cozad, cremation will follow the services. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Julia Carol Pittenger
Died: Monday, November 24, 2003
Age: 41

WELLSTON - Julia Carol Pittenger, 41, of Wellston, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003.

Born Oct. 25, 1962, in Columbus, she was the daughter of Carolyn Gillen Pittenger Coyle of Wellston and the late Joe W. Pittenger. She also is survived by her children, Megan Schliech and Jeffrey Garvin, and her stepfather, William Coyle.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the National Lupus Foundation, 6161 Busch Blvd., Suite 76, Columbus 43229.

Genevieve Scott Barnhart
Died: Monday, November 24, 2003
Age: 83

GUYSVILLE - Genevieve Scott Barnhart, 83, of Carroll and Lancaster, died Monday morning, Nov. 24, 2003, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.

Born July 27, 1920, in Glasgow, Ky., she was the daughter of the late Thomas H. and Lona Gay McDonald Scott.

Mrs. Barnhart was a cook at Ohio University’s Jefferson and Shively Dining Halls. She was a 1937 graduate of Coolville High School and a member of Carroll Senior Citizens and VFW Post 7174 ladies auxiliary. A former resident of Guysville, she attended Shalom Methodist Church in Carroll.

She is survived by daughters Joyce (Roger) Cox of Fort Myers, Fla., and Linda (George) Urssing of Carroll; a son, Karl E. (Sue) Barnhart of Lancaster; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and sisters Frances Hall Clem and Pearl Witte of Guysville.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Barnhart, in 1990; sisters Thelma Walker, Doris Wolford and Alene Golden; and brothers Charles, Bernard, Homer and Robert Scott.

Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor David Cogar officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Shirley A. Shiver
Died: Monday, November 24, 2003
Age: 79

NELSONVILLE - Shirley A. Shivers, 79, of Lancaster, joined her husband of almost 60 years on Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at LanFair Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Oct. 6, 1924, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Margaret Young Keyes. A beloved wife and mother, she dedicated her whole life to her family. She will be sadly missed by her children and all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol Shivers and Mike Altrostic of Lancaster; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Frances Shivers of Lancaster, and Donald Shivers of Columbus; three grandchildren, Robert Shivers Carrie (Roger) Stewart and Jennifer Shivers; six great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Daniel and Juanita Keyes of Lancaster; a sister, Margie Pickett of Nelsonville; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William L. Shivers, on March 24, 2003; a grandson, Richard Shivers; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Shivers.

The family would like to thank the nurses and aides at LanFair for all of their wonderful care of Mom during her stay.

Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Lancaster, with Pastor Mark Dupler officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial gifts may be made to Fairfield County Humane Society.

Carl David Davis
Died: Monday, November 24, 2003
Age: 57

LOGAN - Carl David Davis, 57, of Logan, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003, at his residence.

Born Jan. 29, 1946, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Harry W. and Lillian E. Schorr Davis.

Services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, with military rites by the Combined Veterans of Hocking County.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Gwenda Smith
Died: Monday, November 24, 2003
Age: 74

ALBANY - Gwenda Smith, 74, of Albany passed away at Brookside Manor, The Plains, after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 18, 1929, in Ironton, she was the daughter of the late Wheeler and Mary Sanders Holston. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband Ralph G. Smith and sons, Ralph K. (Marcella), Dixon R. (Connie) of Albany, Dana A. (Pamela) of Stewart; a daughter, Elizabeth A. Smith and special friend, Isaac Harper of Albany, and a foster daughter, Charlotte (Floyd) Saulis of Melbourne, Fla.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Services will be Monday, 1 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home with Msgr. Donald Horak officiating. Entombment will be in Athens Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Wanda P. Malmsbury
Died: Sunday, November 23, 2003
Age: 73

ATHENS - Wanda P. Malmsbury, 73, of Troy, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy.

Born March 4, 1930, in Champagne County, she was the daughter of the late Mills and Ruth Turner Hamilton. She was a member of Living Word Fellowship, and a former nurses aide for of Dettmer Hospital in Troy, and St. Elizabeth and Good Samaritan Hospitals in Dayton.

She is survived by a son and his fiancee, Michael Anthony Malmsbury and Raven Ferdin of Zanesville; a stepdaughter and her husband, Marcia and Dr. James T. Grooms of Athens; brothers Miles Hamilton of Naples, Fla., Carl Hamilton of Valigo, Calif., and John Hamilton of Dayton; sisters Annabel Osgood of Delrio, Texas, and Hazel Gerrish of Hickory, N.C.; two grandsons, Michael II and Jordan Malmsbury of Canton; a step-granddaughter, Sherri Smith of Athens; step-great-grandchildren Alexis and Nicholas Smith of Athens; and her adopted grandchildren, Dallas, Havannah and Carmella of Zanesville.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marcellus Malmsbury, in 1979; two brothers, Edgar and Paul Hamilton; and her longtime companion, Richard Brush.

Services will be held Monday, 2 p.m., at Baird Funeral Home, Troy, with the Rev. Dr. James T. Grooms officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by the Rev. Phyllis Welbaum. Burial will be in Casstown Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from noon to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the college fund for Michael II and Jordan Malmsbury.

Michael D. Long
Died: Sunday, November 23, 2003
Age: 52

GLOUSTER - Michael D. Long, 52, of Glouster, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He will be remembered as a loving son, husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle.

He was born July 4, 1951, in Athens. He was a former sergeant with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Berlin, Germany, during the Vietnam War. He also was a former employee of Poston generating station in The Plains, Seminole Electric in Palatka, Fla., and ABB Airpreheater in Atlanta, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Julia L. Johnson Long of Glouster; his children, for whom he lived, sons Ryan Long of Sarasota, Fla., and Matthew Long of Glouster, and a daughter, Meghan Long of Glouster; his mother, Opal Long of Millfield; two beautiful grandchildren whom he cherished, Mattison Elizabeth Long and Justice Michael Long; sisters Chris (Gene) Martin of Nelsonville, Karen Lanning of Nelsonville; brothers Marty (Sharon) Long of Glouster and Monte Long of Jacksonville, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Jason, Jayde, Breeona, Zoe, Rita, Jack and Jeff; several cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry “Pickle” Long.

Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville, with Pastor Esther Avery officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster, with military graveside rites conducted by the Combined Color Guard.

Carl F. Jeffries
Died: Sunday, November 23, 2003
Age: 78

ALBANY - The Rev. Carl F. Jeffries, 78, of Albany, formerly of Wellston, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at his home.

Born Sept. 6, 1925, in Kerr, Ohio, he was the son of the late Enoch Elmer and Iva Mae Boles Jeffries. He was a decorated veteran of World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Skaggs Jeffries; eight children, John Jeffries, Ray Jeffries, Mike Jeffries, Grace Farley, Leisa Leigh, Mary Thacker, Carlene Sheward and Bob Jeffries; and three stepchildren, Danny Skaggs, Tammy Keener and Karen Hayes.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church. Burial will military rites will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call today from 2 to 8 p.m. at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston.
