NEW PLYMOUTH -- Lorraine Carter, 78, of New Plymouth, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, in Logan.

Born Aug. 26, 1924 in Vinton County, she was the daughter of the late Carl Glaspell and Garnet Clark Glaspell. She is survived by two sons, Michael "Mike" Carter and James "Ike" Carter.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan, with burial in Asbury Cemetery.

Calling hours will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph K. Kinney
Died: Sunday, April 06, 2003
Age: 91

ATHENS -- Ralph K. Kinney, 91, of Athens, formerly of Londonderry, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at his residence.

Born Oct. 19, 1911 in Harrison Twp., Vinton County, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Laura Moore Kinney. He is survived by his wife, Margie Murray Kinney, and daughter, Joyce West.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Londonderry Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are by Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.

Helen M. Betts
Died: Saturday, April 05, 2003
Age: 88

McARTHUR -- Helen M. Betts, 88, of McArthur, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at her residence.

Born Oct. 20, 1914 in Jackson Twp., Vinton County, she was the daughter of the late Leoda Stringfellow Baker.

A nurse's aide at Chillicothe Hospital from 1966-1983, she was a bus driver for Allensville Schools from 1946-1966 and a trustee of Lebanon Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Gladys Schroeder of McArthur; a son, Donald V. (Betty) Betts of McArthur; a daughter-in-law, Betty Betts of South Bloomingville; 14 grandchildren, a step-grandson; 25 great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and two sisters, Geneva Tatman and Hazel McNichols, both of South Bloomingville.

Besides her mother, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Dorsa W. Betts, and second husband, John Baker; a son, Franklin W. Betts Sr.; son-in-law, Walter Schroeder; brother-in-law, Byron Tatman; granddaughter, Janice Schroeder; stepdaughters, Marie Mossburg and Charlene McMillen; and a stepgrandson.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with Rev. Paul Mercer officiating. Burial will be in Ball Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bonna E. Rutherford
Died: Saturday, April 05, 2003
Age: 80

NELSONVILLE -- Bonna E. Rutherford, 80, of Nelsonville, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.

Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Haydenville, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Sylvia Skivers Rieder. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Kennard Rutherford.

Mrs. Rutherford is survived by a son, Ralph Alan Rutherford, of Nelsonville; two daughters, Joy Rutherford of Logan and Ardeth Rutherford of Nelsonville; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Paul "Roy" (Barbara) Rieder of Florida; and two sisters, Mary Lou Smith of Logan and Joy Arlene (Terry) Smith of Florida.

She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Layne Rutherford; a brother, Victor Rieder; and two sisters, Opal Devol and Theda Wilkinson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with Rev. Gordon Sullivan officiating. Interment will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

Glenn A. Gaston
Died: Saturday, April 05, 2003
Age: 85

ATHENS -- Glenn A. Gaston, 85, of Athens, died Saturday, April 5, 2003 at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.

Born July 20, 1917, in Athens County, he was the son of the late J. Lee and Dessie Snider Gaston.

Mr. Gaston was a retired sales manager of Nationwide Insurance Co., with 40 years of service. He was a Farm Bureau member since 1936 and well known in several neighboring counties.

He was a charter member of the Athens Lions Club, and the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Savannah Masonic Lodge 466 of Guysville, York Rite Bodies of Athens and the Aladdin Temple of Columbus. He was a member of the Athens County and Okeechobee, Fla., Shrine Clubs and Ohio University's Green and White Club.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Clarice McDaniel Gaston; a daughter and a son-in-law, Nancy and Bill Thomas of Atlanta, Ga.; a son and a daughter-in-law, Dr. Max L. Gaston and Carol Ann Gaston of Augusta, Ga.; and a granddaughter, Stacey Lynn Brown, of Denver, Colo.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel officiating. Burial will be in Carthage Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with Masonic services conducted at 6 p.m. by Savannah Masonic Lodge 466 of Guysville.

Mildred A. Ucker
Died: Friday, April 04, 2003
Age: 88

LOGAN -- Mildred A. Ucker, 88, of Logan, died Friday, April 4, 2003, in Logan.

Born March 20, 1915, in Logan, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Lodema Ringhiser.

There will be no services or calling hours. Arrangements are by Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan.

Donna Belle Donahoe Morrison

Age: 68

CHILLICOTHE -- Donna Belle Donahoe Morrison, 68, of Chillicothe, formerly of McArthur, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her residence.

Born Feb. 4, 1935, in Vinton Twp., Vinton County, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence M. and Rachel Carpenter Donahoe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cloyd O. Morrison.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Michael G. Dexter Sr.
Died: Thursday, April 03, 2003
Age: 60

LANCASTER -- Pastor Michael G. Dexter Sr., 60, of Lancaster, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003, at his residence. He was the pastor and founder of Good Shepherd Church in Lancaster.

Pastor Mike was chaplain of Fairfield Medical Center for several years, a former employee and chaplain of Anchor Hocking Glass Co., ministered at Fairfield School for Boys and was basketball coach at Church of God Fairfield Christian Academy.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Dexter; sons Michael G. (Michelle) Dexter Jr., Vincent (Kimberly) Dexter, James (Kristina) Dexter and Joshua (Dori) Dexter; daughters Tavon (Eric) Carlisle, Julie (Charles) Anderson, Audrey (John) Grabans, Andrea (Thomas) Graf; and a God-sent daughter, Melissa Erwin, all of Lancaster; 21 grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Hertha) Dexter of Belpre; sisters Rose (Bill) Romine and Betty (Ed) Bowers, both of Columbus, Mary Williams of Belpre, Donuae (Percy) Lewis, Rebecca (Cliton) Watts, Trudy (Randy) Bias, all of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Faye Dexter of Texas; many nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and church family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William T. and Nellie L. Dexter; a brother, William Dexter Jr.; and a sister, Barbara Ayers.

Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Faith Memorial Church, Lancaster, with Pastor and son James Dexter officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the church, 2610 W. Fair Ave., Sunday and Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m. both days.

Arrangements are by Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral Home, Lancaster.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Good Shepherd Church of Lancaster building fund in Pastor Mike's memory.

Joseph L. Bentley
Died: Thursday, April 03, 2003
Age: 88

NEW PLYMOUTH -- Joseph L. Bentley, 88, of New Plymouth, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Logan Health Care Center, after an extended illness.

Born May 17, 1914, in Athens County, he was the son of the late William Sanford and Ella Mingus Bentley. He is survived by his wife, Patience Staten Bentley. He was a retired coal miner and truck driver for Standard Oil Co. of Michigan, a member of the Teamsters Union, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Louie (Lucille) Bentley of Laurelville, Jim (Marilyn Sue) Bentley of New Plymouth and Ralph (Betty) Bentley of Detour Village, Mich.; a daughter, Lisa "Sis" (Jim) McMillan of Sun City, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Damon (Ruth) Bentley of Doanville; a sister, Marie Stanley of Chauncey; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Bentley; two brothers, Robert and Garold Bentley; and two sisters, Pauline Bullock and Rosie Turrill.

Graveside services will be held today, 3 p.m., at Greenlawn Cemetery, New Addition, Nelsonville. Joseph requested that no flowers be sent.

Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home.
