Brent D. Cornwell

Age: 62
ATHENS -- Brent D. Cornwell, 62, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., following a prolonged illness.
Born June 25, 1940, in Athens, he was the son of the late Arthur E. and Delia D. Cornwell. For many years, he owned and operated B.D.C. Design Group Inc., a commercial design firm in Fort Lauderdale. He was a 1958 graduate of Athens High School and a 1962 graduate of Ohio University.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Counts Cornwell; a daughter, Morgan, and a brother and sister-in-law, John and Jan Cornwell of Athens.
A memorial service will be held later in May in Fort Lauderdale. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to an education fund established for Mr. Cornwell's daughter, Morgan. Contact John Cornwell for details regarding gifts to this fund.
Benjamin Carl Hayes
Died: Wednesday, April 30, 2003
ATHENS -- Benjamin Carl Hayes, 16-month-old son of Christopher and Michele Karoub Hayes of Athens, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Children's Hospital, Columbus.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Peter Michael Hayes.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 10, 2 p.m., at Athens First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the March of Dimes, 1500 W. 3rd Ave., Columbus, 43212.

BUCHTEL -- Gary Hayden, 65, of Buchtel, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
Born Sept. 5, 1937, in Buchtel, he was the son of the late John Hayden and Nellie Coakley.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Connie Hayden; two daughters, Lisa (Ron) Reed of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lana (Jim) Pancake of Nelsonville; a son, Darin (Kellie) Hayden of Nelsonville; grandchildren Jill, Marilyn, Spencer, Stephanie and Tommy; brothers Albert Hayden of Nelsonville and Roger (Ruby) Hayden of Buchtel; and sisters Emogene (Chuck) Magley of Grove City and Nancy (Bob) Locke of Alliance.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Edward; brothers John, Willard, Paul Edward and Floyd Hayden; and a sister, Donna Riley.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel, with Pastor Lewis Dunnells officiating.
Mildred M. Burroughs

LOGAN - Mildred M. Burroughs, 91, of Logan, formerly of Hue in Vinton County, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2004, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
Born May 5, 1912, in Gore, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Hite Kennedy. She was a homemaker, a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, a 1931 graduate of Union Furnace High School and a member of Sereno Chapter 128 Order of Eastern Star in McArthur.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Norman) Redd of Logan; granddaughters, Debbie (Mark) Later of Logan and Diana (James) Skinner of Bainbridge; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Hannah Skinner; and a sister-in-law, Lulu Kennedy of Logan.
Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Revs. Marguerite McGrady and Dixie Bauman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Logan.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where Eastern Star services will be held at 7:30.

Alice Jean Hubbard

LOGAN - Alice Jean Hubbard, 82, of Logan, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, in Lanfair Center, Lancaster.
She was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Zanesville, daughter of the late Frank and Edna Jack Brown. She was the widow of the late Wayne H. Hubbard, who died Sept. 22, 1990.
Funeral services will be Monday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home in Logan. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery, Bremen. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Marilyn Sue Mathews

ATHENS - Marilyn Sue Mathews, 76, of Athens, passed away early Thursday morning Jan. 1, 2004, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 7, 1927, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Hal and Emma Rosemary Fisher Rowland. A 1945 graduate of Athens High School and a graduate of Ohio University, she was employed early in life with her husband, Earl, in the operation of Mathews Insurance Co. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, CCL and First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Earl F. Mathews; a daughter, Linda (Travis) Milliken of Athens; sons, Dr. Craig (Sandi) Mathews of Athens and David (Mari Anne) Mathews of Scottsdale, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Steve Shevel of Athens, Johnathan Shevel of Phoenix, Ariz., Morgan Mathews of Pomeroy, Abby Mathews of Athens, Sasha Milliken of Athens and Megan Mathews of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Mildred Rowland of Houston, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a son, Brent Mathews, in 1983; and a brother, Roger Rowland.

COLUMBUS - Brett A. Farley, 36, of Columbus, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at his residence.
Brett was a loving husband, dad, son, brother and a loyal friend, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sterling. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Perry-Farley; sons, Marcus, Cody and Conner; sisters, Jacqueline Eplin of West Virginia, Teri (Chris) Moore and Gina (Charles) Cole of Columbus; and his mother, Kathleen Bocook Farley of Columbus.

HAMDEN - Patricia Ann Wiseman, 61, of Hamden, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at her home.
Born Sept. 12, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Delmar and Mayrune Wiseman.
She is survived by two sons, Howard Wiseman and Terry Stumbo.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Scott Wiseman.

Albert Morgan

MCARTHUR - Albert “Kayo” Morgan, 87, formerly of McArthur, died Wednesday Dec. 31, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Columbus.
Born Nov. 20, 1916, in Elk Twp., Vinton County, he was the son of the late Henry Cleveland and Grace Wilbur Morgan. He was a truck driver and a 1936 graduate of McArthur High School.
He is survived by six brothers, Ralph of Wyandotte, Mich., Paul (Jean) of McArthur, Donald (Diane) of Las Vegas, Jacob (Toshiko) of Petaluma, Calif., Thomas (Arla Lee) of Sacramento, Calif., and David (Dollie) of Vacaville, Calif.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Grace Riffle, Phyllis Risner, Patricia Webb and Mary Jane Morgan; and brothers, John R., Wilbur and Charles Morgan.
Graveside funeral services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Elk Cemetery, McArthur. Friends may call today, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.
Virginia Lou Valkinburg

NELSONVILLE - Virginia Lou Valkinburg, 77, of Nelsonville, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at Mt. Carmel Hospital West, Columbus.
She was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Bicknell, Ind., daughter of the late Ulysses C. and Lottie Summers Crain. She was married to Max E. Valkinburg of Nelsonville for 57 years. She was retired from the Athens County Auditors office.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Max; two sons, David (Suzie) Valkinburg of Logan and Robert Valkinburg of Nelsonville; three daughters, Diane (David) Rood of Columbus, Mary Lou (Joe) Eckels of Groveport and Cathy (Steve) Evans of Logan; 12 grandchildren, Mary Jo Wooten, Mike Eckels, Jennifer Stover, Nancy Cashwell, Stephanie Smart, Suzanna Hinton and Kasey, Kylee, Caleb, Autumn, Alexandria and Chelsie Valkinburg; and eight great-grandchildren, Courtney and Christopher Wooten, Zachary and Julia Cashwell and Wyatt, Lucas, Tanner and Jacob Smart.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Marvin Walker officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
