Wayne B. Brown
Died: Thursday, March 27, 2003
Age: 88

WELLSTON -- Wayne B. Brown, 88, of Sour Run Road, Wellston, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Four Winds Nursing Facility in Jackson.

Born Aug. 13, 1914, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Charles and Stella Lucas Brown. He is survived by a son, Allan Brown; and four daughters, Gloria Speakman, Marilyn Wack, Annabelle Radick and Karen Rowland.

Services will be held Sunday, 1 p.m., at Jenkins Funeral Chapel in Wellston. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 2 to 8 p.m.

Mabel P. Howell
Died: Thursday, March 27, 2003

ATHENS -- Mabel P. Howell of Route 56, Athens, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, in Athens.

Born April 21, 1905, in Deering, Lawrence County, she graduated from Ironton High School, Ohio University and Marshall University. She taught in Lawrence County Schools at Coal Grove (a suburb of Ironton), Xenia and Athens County Schools at Shade and Coolville. After teaching in the Athens City School System at The Plains for a number of years, she retired in 1967.

She was a member of Athens First Presbyterian Church and the United Presbyterian Church Women's Association. She taught Sunday school in the primary department for several years and also was choir mother for the children's choir. She was a charter member of Athens County Retired Teachers Association, a member of the National Education Association, Ohio Education Association and Phi Mu Sorority, and a former member of Friends of Trisolini Gallery and Athens Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center. She was a 65-year member of the Pallas Club and a former member of AFAN. She was active as a 4-H leader and worked with Girl and Boy Scout camping programs. Her late husband, Harold W. Howell, had a Boy Scout camp on their farm and she assisted in building a small cabin and shelter for the camp.

She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Anne Blake of Athens; a sister and brother-in-law, Col. and Mrs. Virgil Max (Margaret) Davis of Alexandria, Va.; brothers-in-law, A.L. Dilonardo of Dickerson, Md., and Bruce Hulett of Camarillo, Calif; a sister-in-law, Mrs. John W. Pancake of Sistersville, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981. H.W. "Happy" Howell was one of Ohio's leading conservationists. He planted so many trees -- more than 100,000 -- he was called the second Johnny Appleseed by the Associated Press.

She also was preceded in death by her parents, William and MaryBelle Pancake of Kitts Hill; a son-in-law, Robert Lawrence Blake of Houston, Texas; sisters, Lena Baldwin of Denver, Colo., Adene Hulett of Camarillo, and Kathleen Dilonardo of Dickerson, Md.; a brother, John W. Pancake; and a niece and nephew of Sistersville.

Services will be held Sunday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, conducted by the Rev. Craig Seitz. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Myrna I. Bean
Died: Wednesday, March 26, 2003
Age: 69

NELSONVILLE -- Myrna I. Bean, 69, of Nelsonville, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at her residence.

Born Aug. 29, 1933, in Carbon Hill, she was the daughter of the late Garland and Florence Brooks Hawk-Allen. She had worked for the former Ogg Wholesale in Nelsonville and retired from Peoples Bank in Nelsonville after 28 years of service. She was a graduate of Carbon Hill High School.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Harold Bean; a son, Scott Bean, and his fiancee, Vickie Williams, of Athens; a daughter, Stefanie Bean-Vath of Nelsonville; grandchildren Brandon (Trina) Bean of Savannah, Ga., and Brandt Bean of Nelsonville; a great-granddaughter, Winter Angelia Bean of Savannah; aunts and uncles Jim and Marge Withem of Murray City, Charles and Katherine Campbell of Willoughby, Freda Juanita McDonald of Willoughby; in-laws Larry and Sharon Bowe of Little Hocking, Frances McGoye of Cleveland Heights, James and Elaine Bean, Paul (fiancee, Kathy) Bean of Columbus, and Ronnie Bean and his wife of California; numerous cousins; and special friends Marlene Patton and Debbie Taylor, both of Nelsonville, and Jane Gompf of Logan.

She was preceded in death by her stepfather, Frank Allen; and a brother-in-law, Mickey McGoye.

Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Warren-Brown Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with the Rev. Gary Carlson officiating. Burial will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., and any time Saturday with the family in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

John E. Edwards
Died: Wednesday, March 26, 2003
Age: 95

ATHENS -- John E. Edwards, 95, of Athens, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1908, near Rio Grande, Ohio, he was the son of the late Eliza and Anna Jones Edwards. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Berniece Stanley, whom he married in 1936; a sister, Julia Hester Koogler; brothers, William Lester and Evan Everette; and a nephew, Robert W. Edwards, who was killed in action in France in 1943.

He is survived by two nephews, James B. Edwards of Chesterhill R.D., and Gordon E. Edwards of St. Cloud, Fla.

Mr. Edwards moved to Athens with his family in 1920. He completed his grade school and high school work at the schools on West State Street in Athens, graduating in 1926. With the aid of part-time employment at McKee Drug Store, The Athens Messenger and a graduate assistantship at Ohio University, he received a masters degree in physics in 1932.

He was a member of several societies, Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, Sigma Pi Sigma and Sigma Xi.

Professor Edwards did graduate work at the University of Chicago and Ohio State University during the summers and was granted a doctor's degree in nuclear physics at Ohio State University in 1947.

The principal research done by Dr. Edwards was in the study of X-rays from the nucleus of atoms using a bent-crystal camera. One photograph taken by him appeared in a widely used atomic and nuclear college physics textbook.

Using the bent-crystal camera, he discovered a new pair of radioactive atoms, called an isomer, in the element Tellurium.

Dr. Edwards served as chairman of the physics department at Ohio University from 1951 to 1957, at a time when the department was expanding to offer the doctor's degree.

In 1957, he was the first physics professor to be awarded the Distinguished Professorship.

In 1972, he retired after 40 years of service. The Accelerator Laboratory, a physics research building at Ohio University, was named in his honor.

The awarding of the first John E. Edwards Undergraduate Internship, to Dale Willis of Columbus, was announced on May 16, 1997.

Professor Edwards was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Athens for many years.

Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens, with Denver Dodrill and William Hixson officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Blache Lucille Efaw
Died: Wednesday, March 26, 2003
Age: 75

ATHENS -- Blanche Lucille Efaw, 75, of Route 56, Athens, died unexpectedly early Wednesday afternoon, March 26, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born in The Plains, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Blanche Cochran Lovsey. She was a graduate of New Marshfield High School, a former employee of McBee Corp. Plant 2 and in the cafeteria, a cook for an Ohio University sorority and an office worker for C&E. She was a Fresh Silks Travel Party representative, and a member of Athens Emblem Club, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion Auxiliary and Ladies Auxiliary 8/40.

She is survived by a daughter, Debra (Alan) Metzel of Wadsworth; a son, Dean (Rosemary) Efaw of Athens; a granddaughter, Kerri Metzel of Wadsworth; six stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (Dean) Gabriel of Groveport, Norma (Roger) Bartlett and LaDonna (Don) Haning, both of Albany; brothers-in-law, George Rhorick of New Marshfield and Bill Lieuellen of Albany; sisters-in-law, Donna Efaw and Margureite Efaw; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl F. Efaw, in 1986; sisters, Alma Rhorick, Margaret Hunter, Gertrude Lieuellen and Juanita Lovsey; and brothers, Harrison, Johnny, Herbert and Gilbert Lovsey.

Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, conducted by Pastor David Cogar. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Larry Gnatowski
Died: Wednesday, March 26, 2003

AMESVILLE -- Larry Gnatowski, beloved husband of Roxanne Groff, died at his beautiful home near Amesville on March 26, 2003.

Larry's work as a physician assistant touched the lives of many people in Southeastern Ohio for the past 25 years. Born Aug. 30, 1946, in Cleveland, he was the son of Edward John Gnatowski and the late Clara Gnatowski. Larry's compassion for life and his gentle ways will stay with us forever.

Blanch L. Tippie
Died: Wednesday, March 26, 2003
Age: 92

STEWART -- Blanch L. Tippie, 92, of Stewart, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.

Born June 10, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Flo King Dunfee.

She is survived by a son, Carl Vernon (Helen) of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Elsie "Sissy" and Rodney Murvay of Reynoldsburg; a stepson, Charles (Gabriel) Tippie of Texas; a stepdaughter, Bernita Stauffer of Chillicothe; a brother-in-law, Paul Barnhart of Stewart; a brother, Mull "Tim" of Guysville; grandchildren Eddie and Rhonda Barnhart, Patty and Vern Gabriel of Stewart, Rick and Diane Barnhart of West Virginia, Carla and Jim Proudfoot, Myra and Bruce Brown, all of Maryland, Janet Phillips, Darin, Wendy and Eric Tippie of Westerville; great-grandchildren, Kim and Keith Barnhart, Mike, Mark and Jennifer Gabriel, all of Stewart, Tim and Laura Proudfoot, Mark and Rachel Brown, all of Maryland, and Sara Tippie of Westerville; and great-grandchildren, Erica, Ryon Mike and Jacob.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Acel A. Tippie; a daughter, Berdena Barnhart; a great-grandson, Steven Johnson; and five brothers, Elmer, Wood, Elza "Jiggs," Grant and Steve; three sisters, Mary, Elsie "Hoodie" and Letha; three half brothers; and sisters Lester, Bessie and Sye.

Services will be held Sunday, 3 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home in Coolville. Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery.
