Margaret Fischer
ZALESKI - Margaret Jane Fischer, 89, of Connecticut, formerly of Zaleski, passed away on Dec. 5, 2000, in Connecticut.
She was born April 24, 1911, the daughter of the late William Carl and Myrtle Trimmer Fischer of Zaleski. Her mother died at her birth and she was raised by a devoted aunt, her father's sister, Nelle L. Fischer of Zaleski.
She was a graduate of Zaleski High School and Mary A. Burnham School, which was then in Northhampton, Mass. She was later a trustee of Burnham School. She received a bachelors degree from Barnard College in New York in 1935. She also did graduate work at Columbia University in the field of classical drama.
After graduating from college, Miss Fischer became the Barnard representative and the junior executive director of the George Pierce Baker Group, an organization of successful women in professional theater. Each member of the group was a student of Baker, a Harvard University professor. The group was created to help young women establish themselves in various capacities of the theater. The group later became part of the American Theater Wing.
During the war years and for some time afterward, Miss Fischer was at home in Zaleski because of a long series of illnesses and bereavements in her family. In those years, at the urging of her family, she made many visits to New York and elsewhere to keep in touch with her friends and interests. After the death of her last family member in 1956, she moved to New York City, where she made her home at 11 Fifth Ave. While in New York, she traveled abroad extensively and spent a number of summers in Cape Cod.
Upon leaving Zaleski, Miss Fischer donated the family home to Ohio University, which later gave the property to the Zaleski Senior Center. The center used the home for meetings and activities for senior citizens.
The Fischer family was well-known in Athens, where they had many friends. Miss Fischer will be remembered by some for the talks on theater that she gave before the Athens Branch of the American Association of University Women, of which she remained a member even after moving to New York.
Miss Fischer was an active member of the Drama League of New York and one of its earliest members in 1936; a founding member of the Mayor's Committee for the New York Shakespeare Festival, which provided free performances in Central Park and in the city's schools; an active volunteer for other performing arts organizations; and a member of many committees for Barnard College. She took a keen interest in Republican politics, for which she did much volunteer work. Her interests also included many charitable organizations, and she was a member of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church and a founding member of the non-denominational City Church, New York.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two unmarried uncles, F.E. and J.P. Fischer; and her aunt.
There will be a graveside service in the spring on a date to be announced. Her ashes will be placed in the family mausoleum at Oak Grove Cemetery, Zaleski. Arrangements were made by Kenny Funeral Home, Sharon, Conn.
