Donnie Freeman
Died: Thursday, December 6, 2001
SYRACUSE -- Donnie A. Freeman, 31, of Syracuse, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in Pomeroy.
Born Feb. 25, 1970, in Gallipolis, he was the son of Melvin Freeman and Linda Rigney Mills, both of Racine.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tara Dawn Wolfe Freeman; daughters Ashley Nicole Freeman and Jessica Lee Freeman; and a son, Michael Anthony Freeman.
Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Fisher-Acree Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.
Mary Newlon
Died: Thursday, December 6, 2001
COOLVILLE -- Mary Elizabeth Newlon, 86, of Coolville, went home with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001.
Born Oct. 9, 1915, in Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Emma Hanson Lawrence. She was a graduate of the former Ames-Bern High School in Amesville.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Andrew Newlon of Coolville; a son, Harry (Jeanne) Newlon of Greenville, Tenn.; two daughters, Donna (Roger) Bennett of Marietta and Janet (Don) Jeffers of Coolville; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis (Helen) Lawrence of Columbus; three sisters, Margaret (Quentin) Scott of Oregon, Garnet Parsons of Florida, and Barbara (Bob) Smith of Columbus; a stepbrother, Louis (Ellie) White of Florida; a stepsister, Betty Cooley of Athens; a brother-in-law, George (Jean) Newlon of Arkansas; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Black of Michigan and Mary (Al) Hatcher of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; four brothers; three sisters; and stepfather Vint White.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at White-Moquin Funeral Home in Coolville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in Bartlett Cemetery in Bartlett.

Oscar Conant
Died: Wednesday, December 5, 2001
STEWART -- Oscar D. Conant, 75, of Stewart, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Arcadia Nursing Home, Coolville.
Born Oct. 1, 1926, in Broadwell, he was the son of the late Clyde and Garnet White Conant.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Tabler; two stepsons, Leonard and William Tabler; two daughters, Debbie Conant and Joyce Woody; and a stepdaughter, Sylvia Norris.
Services will be Sunday, 1 p.m., at Kilvert Church of God. Burial will be in Kilvert Cemetery.
Friends may call at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Sunday one hour prior to services.
Helen Fouts
Died: Wednesday, December 5, 2001
CORNING -- Helen C. Fenneken Fouts, King James Boulevard, Westlake, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 5, 2001, at Oakridge Home in Westlake.
She was born in Corning, daughter of the late George and Charlotte Weidenhagen Fenneken. She lived in Corning until moving to Lakewood in 1965. She had lived in Westlake since 1991. Mrs. Fouts was a member of Westside Church of Christ in Cleveland and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth N. Fouts; a niece, Gwen Fenneken Senerius of Toledo; two nephews, Bill Fenneken of Columbus, and Wally Fenneken of Toledo; six great-nieces and great-nephews, and three great-great-nieces and great-great-grandnephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister and two brothers, George and Charles Fenneken.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m., in the chapel of Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, with Pastor Steven Cain of Westside Church of Christ officiating. Cremation took place at Care Group Cremation Center in Jefferson.

John Miller
Died: Wednesday, December 5, 2001
ATHENS -- John R. Miller, 30, of Athens, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at his home.
Born July 1, 1971, in Portsmouth, Va., he was the son of Daniel and Deloris Lanning Miller.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lori; five children, Daniel Miller, Natasha Everett, Crystal Clay, Jessica Clay and Samantha Clay; a granddaughter, Zoey Kayle-Lauren Everett; and a sister, Karrie Lynn Mock.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens, with Carolyn Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Lancaster.

LOGAN -- Mackenzie Renee Ogle, 19-day-old daughter of Denise Renee Brown and John David Ogle of Logan, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital. She was born Oct. 16 in Logan.
Services will be Friday, 10 a.m., in Laurel Cemetery. Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan.

RAY -- David G. Buck Rhodes, 59, of Ray, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at his residence.
Born July 6, 1942, of Columbus, son of the late Roy J. and Betty R. Bell Rhodes.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Speakman Rhodes; a daughter, Missy Whiting; and sons Mick, Matt and Mark Rhodes.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Bell Cemetery in Allensville.

LOGAN -- Mary L. Huston, 92, of Logan, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born June 8, 1909, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late W.T. and Lucy Robson Frazee. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Chauncey Huston.
Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Goldie Goldsberry
Died: Sunday, December 9, 2001
ATHENS -- Goldie Mae Woods Goldsberry, 87, of Columbus, formerly of Athens, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus.
She was the widow of James H. Woods and Dr. Blaine R. Goldsberry. She was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church and the Trustees Academy of Ohio University, was a charter member of the Guild of O'Bleness Memorial Hospital and of the Order of Easter Star Chapter 292 of Louisa, Ky.
She is survived by a son, James H. (Gail) Woods of Ann Arbor, Mich.; grandchildren James H. Woods Jr. and Lisa O. Woods; great-granddaughters Rachel and Julia; a brother, L. Wayne Wooten; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Wesley Glen Retirement Center, 5155 N. High St., Columbus. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Louisa.
Arrangements are by Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Home, Worthington Chapel, 515 High St., Worthington.
Bessie Richards
Died: Sunday, December 9, 2001
WELLSTON -- Bessie Cox Richards, 96, of Jackson, formerly of Wellston, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Holzer Medical Center, Jackson.
She was born March 15, 1905.
She is survived by six daughters, Jean Griner, Marjorie Jackson, Patsy Arthur, Linda Hubbard, Nina Sue Luster and Peggy Rose; and four sons, Harold, Ivan, Robert and Don. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Richards; a daughter, Mary Lee Hale; and a son, Cecil Richards Jr.
Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

Paul Smith
Died: Sunday, December 9, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Known for his athleticism, quick wit and work ethic, Paul E. Artis Smith, 42, of Nelsonville, ended the battle against cancer on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001.
Born Dec. 30, 1958, Artis was known for his unique shooting style in basketball. He earned All-Ohio status and was Tri-Valley Conference Most Valuable Player in the 1977-78 season. He coached youth basketball in Nelsonville for many seasons.
Although only 5'6 and 130 pounds, Artis also achieved All-Ohio honors as a baseball pitcher. He was chosen as Tri-Valley Conference Player of the Year in 1978. He established a standing Nelsonville-York record of striking out 188 batters in 76 innings of pitching during his senior season. Known for his variety of pitches, Artis had seven career no-hitters. A member of the Logan Legion Post Squad, Paul pitched in the 1977 State Legion Tournament.
Artis was noted for his amazing memory and ability to recite lengthy, witty poems or stories word for word.
Fishing was one of Artis' favorite pastimes. He had many Fish Ohio awards and achieved master angler status.
Artis was a 1978 graduate of Nelsonville-York High School. He was employed at Wm. Brooks Shoe Factory for more than 20 years, where he served as union president.
He is survived by his mother, Helen L. Martin Smith, and uncle Lester Smith, both of Nelsonville; brothers Kenny (Rhonda) and John E. (Debbie) Smith of Nelsonville; a sister, Joyce Ann Smith-Stanley of Nelsonville; nephews Kenneth Jamie Smith and Jonathon Smith of Nelsonville; a niece, Heather Smith of Nelsonville; an aunt, Garnet Smith; special friends Doug Dearth, Doug Dearth Jr. and Donson Dearth, all of Lancaster, Paul and Connie Wallace of Logan, and Matt McCombs of Nelsonville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth J. Smith, who passed away in 1987; an infant sister, Cathy Faye Smith; paternal grandparents Raymond and Freda Smith; and maternal grandmother, Pauline Martin Coulson Balch.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Warren-Brown Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with the Rev. King Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

POMEROY -- Gretta M. Brown Thomas, 86, of Pomeroy, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis.
Born Oct. 11, 1915, in Minersville, she was the daughter of George and Mary Elise Roush Brown.
She is survived by a daughter, Zana Yakoubian; and a son, John E. Thomas.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Franklin Thomas.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Fisher-Acree Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Born Feb. 18, 1916, in Muskingum County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Gertrude Dixon Wilson.
She is survived by sons Harold and Carl Circle; and daughters Dorothy Harden, Donna Mutti and Dixie Sayre.
Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Carmel United Methodist Church in Racine. Burial will be in Carmel Cemetery.

WELLSTON -- Sally Jo Davis, 59, of Wellston passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Adena Medical Center, following an extended illness.
Born June 18, 1942, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Audrey (Gill) and the late William Norris.
She is survived by her husband, Rick Davis; a daughter, Lisa (Chuck) Greer of Oklahoma; two sons, Eric (April) Hollingshead of Wellston, and Dustin Davis; and five grandchildren. She is also survived by her mother and a sister, Billie Jean (Norris) Bradley; many nieces and nephews; and special friends.
Services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m. at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston with the Revs. Bob Ervin and Mark Baker. Burial will be at Salem Cemetery.
