Emerson Puckett
Died: Friday, December 7, 2001
LONDONDERRY -- Emerson C. Puckett, 87, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at his residence.
Born March 30, 1914, in Pike County, he was the son of the late Samuel Elmer and Mallie Jordan Puckett. He was also preceded in death by his wife Angeline Grammy Shepard Puckett.
He is survived by daughters Mary Ann Ragland, Lois Peoples and Joyce Huff; and sons Donald, Richard and Sammy Puckett.
Graveside services were held on Friday at Londonderry Cemetery.

Mildred Thompson
Died: Friday, December 7, 2001
McARTHUR -- Mildred Virgie Thompson, 90, of McArthur, died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at her residence.
She was born March 4, 1911, in Wood County, W.Va. Mrs. Thompson was a seamstress for Indianapolis Glove Co. in Indianapolis, Ind., a member of Vinton County Senior Citizens and a former Green Thumb worker.
She is survived by a granddaughter-in-law, Deborah (Walter) Chowning Brown of McArthur; and great-granddaughters Ashley, Brittany and Kayla Chowning of McArthur.
She was preceded in death by husbands Theodore Chowning and Homer Thompson; a daughter, Carlene Horr; a grandson, Michael Chowning; her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Earlham Cemetery in Richmond, Ind.
Friends may call at Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur on Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family, in care of the funeral home.
John Boldman
Died: Thursday, December 6, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- John Edward Boldman, 49, of Columbus, formerly of Nelsonville, died unexpectedly on Thursday evening, Dec. 6, 2001, in Columbus.
Born Dec. 17, 1952, in Athens, he was the son of Garnet Walraven Fletcher of Athens, and the late Jack Boldman. He was a graduate of Athens High School. He was employed as a forklift operator at Big Lots warehouse in Columbus, and was a musician, songwriter, guitarist and guitar instructor. He was formerly employed by SEPTA Center in Nelsonville, where he was an alcohol and drug counselor. He wrote and produced the album Don't Stand Alone, and was best known in the Athens area for his band, J.D. Express. He also was a musician with other local bands and helped raise funds by playing in bands for benefits in the Athens and Pomeroy areas. He had performed for Carnival Cruise Lines, and with the Jimmy Brown Gospel and Don Reed Shows in Nashville, Tenn.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his former wife, Candi Boldman of Nelsonville; daughters Connie Boldman of Newark and Cinamon(cq) Holly McGee of Nelsonville; sons Robert Holly of Athens and Daniel Holly of Anaheim, Calif.; grandchildren Cheyanne Holly of Nelsonville, Daniel Dishone of Athens and Krystal Holly of Anaheim; sisters Debbie Pierson of Athens, Ruby Kettering of Anchorage, Alaska, and Sandy Cook of Columbus; nieces Kelly Cook of Columbus, Katlyn Pierson and Andrea Pierson of Athens; a nephew, Robbie Cook of Columbus; and brothers Jack and James Boldman of Anderson, Ind.
Services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dwight D. Umbel officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Edgar Butcher
Died: Thursday, December 6, 2001
POMEROY -- Edgar Eugene Gene Butcher, 79, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Riverside Hospital in Columbus.
Born Oct. 17, 1922, in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Archie and Elizabeth Knight Butcher.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Butcher; and daughter Mary White.
Services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rocksprings Cemetery.
Friends may call the funeral home on Monday between 7 and 9 p.m.
D. Ray Purkey
Died: Sunday, December 16, 2001
ATHENS -- D. Ray Purkey, 91, of Dayton, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Hospice of Dayton.
Born Oct. 23, 1910, in Hancock County, he was the son of Harry and Bertha Oberholtzer Purkey.
He had a career spanning 40 years as an educator, retiring from the Department of Education and Ohio State University. After receiving a masters degree at Ohio State, he served as executive secretary of the FFA and supervisor of vocational agriculture education. He established many vocational schools in the state. Always a leader, he had many interests in an active retirement. He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lake Helen, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Purkey; twin sister, Dorothy Tarris; and brother, Vern Purkey.
He is survived by his wife, Elfreda Purkey; daughters Marilyn (Dan) Neason of Athens and Jeanne (Tom) Howison of Galion; a son, Dave (Martha) Purkey of Zanesville; brothers Carl, John and Glen Purkey; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 830 Military Road, Zanesville. Burial will be in Mount Perry Cemetery, Perry County.

Annabelle Davis
Died: Saturday, December 15, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Annabelle Davis, 94, of Nelsonville, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001.
Born Jan. 18, 1907, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Dewhurst and Mable McLaughlin Dewhurst.
A 1924 graduate of Nelsonville High School, Mrs. Davis and her husband, Roy O. Davis, owned and operated the former S. Davis Grocery Store in Nelsonville. She was a member of Nelsonville United Methodist Church and the Queen Esther Class of church. She was also a member of the Nelsonville Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her sons, Roy E. (Nancy) Davis and Ralph S. Chub (Ellen) Davis, both of Nelsonville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert Dewhurst of Boulder City, Ariz.; sisters, Alma Jean Hirley of Tarpon Springs, Fla. and Amy Jo Bateman of Venice, Fla.; several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy O. Davis, who passed away on Feb. 11, 1969; a brother, Don, and sisters, Lillian, Leah and Marie.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Warren-Brown Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with Pastors William Hixson and Michael Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Gertrude Finlaw
Died: Friday, December 14, 2001
POMEROY -- Gertrude M. Grueser Finlaw, 80, of Pomeroy, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at her residence.
Born June 17, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Frank X. and Mae Evans Grueser. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Finlaw. She is survived by her children, Tamara Wight and Stephen R. Finlaw.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Barbara Flood
Died: Friday, December 14, 2001
LOGAN -- Barbara E. Flood, 85, of Logan, peacefully left to join her Lord on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at her residence after a prolonged illness.
She was born March 25, 1916, in Athens County, daughter of the late Clarence and Edith Margaret Dye Barnhart. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, George Washington Flood.
She was a graduate of the former Carbon Hill High School.
She is survived by a son, Donald (Judith) Flood of Logan; two daughters, Grace Sickels of Indiana, Pa., and Marjorie (Ronald) Bernard of Logan; nine grandchildren, Steve (Marilyn) Blair of Athens, Janet Blair of Logan, Duane Blair of New Straitsville, Gregory Blair of Logan, Tony Flood of Tremont City, Linda (Jeff) Sharb of Logan, Diana Flood of Logan, Larry Sickles of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Holly Sickles Gray of Indiana, Pa.; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jesse Barnhart and Richard Barnhart, both of Logan; and two sisters, Dorothy McCune and Ruth Lehman, both also of Logan.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Iris Frances Giacobbe; and her brother, James E. Barnhart.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home in Logan, with Rev. Roger Fidler officiating. Interment will be in Oakgrove Cemetery, Logan.

Louise Gillette
Died: Friday, December 14, 2001
ATHENS -- Louise V. Gillette, 77, of Pomeroy Road, Athens, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 27, 1924, in Athens County, daughter of the late Hollie and Hazel Plants Thomas. She was a retired beautician for Steppes and an avid bingo player.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Cecil Gillette Sr.; a son, Cecil (Sheila) Gillette Jr. of New Marshfield; daughters Sis (Dave) Wright of Albany and Shari Smith of The Plains; grandchildren Lauren and Zeke Smith; stepgrandchildren Kassie Damman and Jenny Wright; a brother, Wesley Thomas of Shade; and three sisters, Margie Robinson of Florida, Phyllis Lehlbach of Athens and Mae Irwin of Barberton.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Richard, Edward and Cleo Thomas; and a sister, Dorothy Patterson.
Graveside services will be today at 1 p.m. at Alexander Cemetery with Pastor Dave Cogar officiating. No calling hours will be observed.

Raymond Amerine Sr.
Died: Thursday, December 13, 2001
CREOLA -- Raymond C. Amerine Sr., 68, of Creola, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at his residence.
Born Oct. 2, 1933, in Hocking County, son of the late Carl L. and Leota Woodgeard Amerine, he was a retired tool and die maker from United Technology in Zanesville.
Mr. Amerine was a veteran of the U.S. Army and graduate of South Bloomingville High School.
He is survived by sons Raymond C. (Rhonda) Amerine Jr. of Creola and Mark Amerine of Logan; daughters Christine (Stanley) Unklesbay of Creola, Charlotte (Clinton) Faris of Dundas, Leota (William) Wilson of Zanesville, Connie Amerine of Florence, S.C., and Teresa (David) Darsow of Billings, Mont.; a sister, Mary Rheinscheld of Winchester, Ind.; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Mitchell Amerine, on July 3, 1997; two sisters, Edith Amerine and Opal Paxton and a grandson, Dewey Roof III.
Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. Mary Ann Storms officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.

Phillip Daughterty
Died: Thursday, December 13, 2001
ATHENS -- Phillip Michael Daugherty of Monrovia, Calif., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001.
Mr. Daugherty was born Jan. 18, 1924, in Mullins, WVa.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna; children Connie Roberts, Mark Daugherty, Peter Daugherty, Catherine Burns, Mary Myers, Adelaide Blackman and Johanna McAvoy; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Douglass and Zook Colonial Chapel in Monrovia, Calif.
Francis Higgins
Died: Thursday, December 13, 2001
AMESVILLE -- Frances Higgins, 95, of Athens, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
Born in Amesville, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Edmunda Smith Clark. Mrs. Higgins moved to Athens in 1917 and was a graduate of Athens High School and Ohio University. She taught in Chautauqua, N.Y., as well as Parma, Cleveland, The Plains and Athens City Schools. She was county supervisor of government F.E.R.A. schools.
A member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women's Circle 4, she was also active in Athens County, state and national teachers' associations. A member of the Order of Eastern Star 175 and Shrine Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority at Ohio University and a member of the Lydia Lash Evans Club since 1932.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, D. Clark and Priscilla Higgins of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a granddaughter and husband, Nancy Ellen Higgins and Donald Quist of Kenosha, Wisc., a grandson and wife, Michael Alan and Kathi Higgins of San Ramon, Calif.; and four great-granddaughters, Erin, Martha, Rachel and Emma Quist.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis D. Higgins, in 1972; a sister, Merle Clark, in 1924; and a brother, Ralph Clark in 1993.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home with the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel officiating. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery.
