George Knox
Died: Monday, December 17, 2001
McARTHUR -- George L. Knox, 71, of McArthur, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001.
Born March 20, 1930, in McArthur, he was the son of the late George A. and Bertha Calvin Knox.
He was retired president and chief executive officer of Unity Savings Bank and Knox Insurance Agency in McArthur.
He taught physics at McArthur High School in the early 1960s. Mr. Knox was a member of First Christian Church, a U.S., Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict, a 1948 graduate of McArthur High School, a 1952 graduate of Ohio University with a B.S.E.E. degree, member and past master of the Delta Lodge 207 F&AM, McArthur Chapter 102 Royal Arch Masons, a former member of the McArthur Fire Department where he served 23 years, a member of the Vinton County Amateur Radio Club, former trustee of the Ohio Savings and Loan League, lifetime member of McArthur Robert Wyckoff American Legion Post 303, former executive board member of the Chief Logan Boy Scouts of America and a former member of the McArthur Development Association.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marianne Gill Knox; sons Bruce (Doreen) Knox of McArthur, Brian (Ginger) Knox of Seattle, Wash., and Carl (Angela) Knox of McArthur; grandsons Conner, Evan and August Knox; a sister, Janet (Tip) Ziegler of Oxford; a brother, Harold (Lena) Knox of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Elaine Knox of Loveland; and his father-in-law, Loyd (Alice) Gill of McArthur.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl E. Knox.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McArthur First Christian Church with Rev. Walter Goble officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, where Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m.

Aileen Wehrung
Died: Saturday, December 15, 2001
POMEROY -- Aileen Grace Wehrung, 87, of Pomeroy, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, in Pomeroy.
Born Sept. 24, 1914, in Minersville, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Leticia Jones Rea.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Henry Wehrung.
Mrs. Wehrung is survived by her son, Harlan Craig Wehrung; and her daughter, Judith Rea Sisson.
Private graveside services will be conducted. No calling hours will be observed.

NELSONVILLE -- Sandra K. Tremper, 35, of Nelsonville, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her residence.

Vernice Ball
Died: Thursday, December 6, 2001
THE PLAINS -- Vernice L. Betty Ball, 86, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
She was a member of Columbia Heights United Methodist Church and Westland Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Ball; and her parents, William and Electa Pickett Davis.
She is survived by a brother, Harold (Eleanor) Davis of The Plains; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Dorothy VanMeter; and a stepdaughter, Cynthia Ball.
Graveside services and interment will be held Monday at Sunset Cemetery in Galloway, with the Rev. A. Gail Sims officiating.
Arrangements are by Shoedinger Hilltop Chapel in Columbus.
Virginia Brooks
Died: Thursday, December 6, 2001
CHAUNCEY -- Virginia May Brooks, 66, of Chauncey, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at her residence.
Born May 29, 1935, in Harrison, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Sr. and Cora Carder Revels. She assisted in the care of the mentally handicapped for Havar Inc. for 13 years, and was a member of Mineral Church and Glouster Moose Lodge.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Greg (Rebecca) Cox of Chauncey; granddaughters Teri and Louise Shipley of Chauncey; a grandson, Larry (Tasha) Shipley of Chauncey; a great-granddaughter, Catilyn Shipley of Chauncey; brothers Albert (Nancy) Revels of Kent, and John (Judy) Revels Jr. of Worthington, W.Va.; and special friends, Pearl Graham and Shirley Sams of New Marshfield.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Robert and Carl Revels; and sisters Geraldine Arnold, Opal White and Louise Murphy.
Services will be held Saturday, 10 a.m., with Bob Swart officiating at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery.

Thomas Schrader
Died: Thursday, November 29, 2001
LOGAN -- Thomas Ray Schrader, 51, of Logan, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
Born Feb. 27, 1950, in Hocking County, he was the son of Virgie Glass Schrader and the late Charles J. Schrader. He also is survived by his wife, Nettie M. Campbell Schrader; a son, Thomas J. Schrader; a daughter, Elly Morgan; and a stepdaughter, Randi Marie Roush.
Services will be Monday, 2 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., and on Sunday after 10 a.m., with the family in attedance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Vada Kovaleski
Died: Wednesday, November 21, 2001
McCONNELSVILLE -- Vada Lea Kovaleski, 65, of 4500 Avalon Road, Rushville, formerly of Malta, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2001, at Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster.
Born Nov. 3, 1936, in Honey Run, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Etta Maye Boice Connolly. Mrs. Kovaleski was a retired cook, formerly owned and operated Vada's Kitchen in McConnelsville, and had also cooked at Blue Bell and Zann's restaurants. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in McConnelsville, and was an avid bingo player.
She is survived by two daughters, Susan Bise of Chauncey, and Cathryn Walker of Louisville; four sons, Jack Kovaleski of Rushville, Wally and Andy Kovaleski of McConnelsville, and Tom Kovaleski of Canton; four sisters, Inez Mullins of Athens, Irma Connolly of Caldwell, Ina Blatt of Kent, and Katy Chapin of McConnelsville; three brothers, Frank Connolly of Evansville, Ill., Neal and Dan Connolly of Caldwell; 12 grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Carolyn Rogers and Irene Connolly; and a brother, Tracy Connolly.
Services will be held Saturday, noon, at Miller-Huck Funeral Home in McConnelsville, with Pastor Sanford Short officiating. Burial will be in McConnelsville Cemetery.

Vernice Auflick
Died: Monday, November 19, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Vernice V. Wolf Boling Auflick, 81, of Nelsonville, passed away on Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Aultman Hospital in Canton.
She was born May 31, 1920, in Athens County, daughter of the late Ralph and Adda Howard Wolf.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Edgar Auflick of Nelsonville; a son, Daniel (Cassandra) Boling of New Plymouth; a daughter, Nancy (Rich) Miller of Canton; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Florence) Wolf of Hayesville, and Wilbur (Pat) Wolf of Nelsonville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank L. Boling; two sons, Ralph Boling and Charles Boling; and seven brothers and two sisters.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with the Rev. Dave Shoemaker officiating. Burial will be in Connett Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Tracy DeLozier
Died: Monday, November 19, 2001
ALBANY -- Tracy Amos DeLozier, 68, of Columbus, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Mount Carmel West Medical Center, Columbus, following a brief illness.
Born April 3, 1933, in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Pearl and Marie Amos. She was a graduate of Cheshire High School, retired from Ohio State University Hospital, and was a member of Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Columbus.
She is survived by two brothers, Galen Amos of Columbus and Luther (Jana) Amos of Cheshire; six sisters, Jennie McNeal of West Milton, Lavada Barcus of Middleport, Lydia (Joe) Chestnut of London, Lyvonnia (Roy) Boggs of Pomeroy, Oretha Rider of Bidwell and Maxine (David) Harner of Albany; a half sister, Mary (James) Myers of Marion; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George DeLozier; two half brothers, Bruce Rogers and Alva Amos; and a sister, Delores.
Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with Jim McCloud officiating. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery, Cheshire, Friday at 3 p.m.

Velma Guess
Died: Sunday, November 18, 2001
LOGAN -- Velma Kathleen Guess, 74, of Logan, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, in Logan.
Born Dec. 24, 1926, in Greendale, Green Twp., Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Orval Guy and Clara Etta Pierson Smith.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens in Good Hope Twp., Hocking County.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. There will be no visitation on Thanksgiving Day.
Betty Sanford
Died: Friday, December 21, 2001
ATHENS -- Betty Jane Smith Sanford, 64, of Austin, Texas, died late Friday evening, Dec. 21, 2001, at South Austin Hospital.
Born May 14, 1937, in Athens, she was the daughter of Leslie F. Pierce and the late Bertha Smith Pierce.
A graduate of Rome Canaan High School, she retired as a computer systems operator for the federal government. She was an active member of St. Catherine Catholic Church, Austin.
She is survived by daughters Norma Jean Sanford of Front Royal, Va., and Tammi S. Terry of Austin; sons Donald Sanford Jr. of Cincinnati, Dennis L. (Amy) Sanford of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Gary S. Sanford of Austin and David W. (Julie) Sanford of Trenton, Mich.; grandchildren Samantha, Kaylin, MacKenzie, Brooke and Brennan; stepgrandchildren Danielle and Dan; sisters Bernadette Reif of Margate, Fla., Carol Bauman of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Sharon Sienuta of Dracut, Mass.; a brother, Joseph Sienuta of Paris, Va.; nieces Kim, Gina, Kristi and Jennifer; nephews Dino, Wayne Jr., Daniel and Joseph; aunts Dorothy (Lloyd) Thompson and Mary Ann (Bob) Finsterwald; and an uncle, Dallas Smith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Sanford, in 2000; and adopted parents (grandparents) Edward and Mary Coe Smith.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home. Athens, with Msgr. Patrick Gaughan officiating. Burial will be in Canaanville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 7 that evening.
Clara Estep
Died: Thursday, December 20, 2001
LOGAN -- Clara Agnes Estep, 93, of Logan, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Logan Healthcare Center after an extended illness.
Born June 14, 1908, in Fairfield County, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Miller Schrader. Mrs. Estep was the widow of George Jacob Estep, who died in 1974. She was a homemaker and was retired from Goodman Shoe Co. of Logan and Wm. Brooks Shoe Co. of Nelsonville as a fancy stitcher. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Logan, and St. Mary's Auxiliary.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Virgie Schrader of Logan, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Anastasia Joos, Magdalene Krannitz, Elizabeth Kellenbarger and Catherine Poling; and two brothers, Ambrose and Charles Schrader.
A funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Logan, with the Rev. Fr. Richard Pendolphi officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home where the Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.

McARTHUR -- Dennis Blackford, 56, of McArthur, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Doctors Hospital West in Columbus.
Born Dec. 1, 1945, in Brighton, England, he was the son of the late Jesse Francis Blackford and Barbara Johnson Blackford.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Murray City, with bural in Salem Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
