Marjorie Brewer
Died: Wednesday, December 19, 2001
REEDSVILLE -- Marjorie Brewer, 86, of Dayton and formerly of Reedsville, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Granview Hospital in Dayton.
Born May 19, 1915, in Granville, she was the daughter of the late Alban and Hazel Chambers Curtis.
Mrs. Brewer is survived by a son, Warren; and daughter, Myra.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at White-Moquin Funeral Home in Coolville. Burial will be in Sandhill Cemetery, Long Bottom.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from noon until the time of services.
Almeda Hurst
Died: Wednesday, December 19, 2001
THE PLAINS -- Almeda Meda Belle Hurst, 93, of The Plains, passed from this life Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born in Dexter on Dec. 7, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Jonas and Olive Bethel Rathburn and was one of five boys and three girls.
Mrs. Hurst was a member of Kyger Creek Methodist Church.
She is survived by her sons, Henry (Mae) Hurst of Athens and Edgar (Thearon) Hurst of The Plains; 13 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orland, in 1983; two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Mark Dupler officiating. Burial will be in Canaanville Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Maurel Hunkins
Died: Tuesday, December 18, 2001
ATHENS -- Maurel Hunkins, 97, of Louisville, Ky., and formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001.
A lover of life, humor, and chocolate, he was an enthusiastic violinist, conductor, professor, and college administrator associated with Manhattan College, New York University and Ohio University.
He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. At Ohio University, he served as dean of men and director of public occasions and was a founding member of the faculty string quartet.
He also was assistant conductor of the Chautauqua (N.Y.) Symphony, played in the Charleston (W.Va.) Symphony, and was a long-time friend to members of the Louisville Symphony Orchestra. Survivors include his significant other, Clara Markham of Louisville; his son, Arthur Hunkins of Greensboro, N.C.; his daughter, Nancy Hunkins of Asheville, N.C.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private chamber music gathering will be held Thursday morning in Louisville.
Susan Lineback
Died: Tuesday, December 18, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Susan Marie Lineback, 48, of Oxford, went to Glory Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 after a brief illness.
She was born on July 31, 1953, in Nelsonville, daughter of Jack and Naomi Ogg Maurer.
She was a loving, nurturing mother, wife and nurse who sacrificed herself for her family and patients. Unmatched in character, strength and courage. Trusting God in Christ for her strength and salvation. Sensitive, strong and enduring in trials. Always expending herself for others. She was a teacher of life by example and will be missed.
She is remembered and loved by her husband, Robert B. Lineback; a 25-year-old daughter, Stephanie; three sons, Aaron, 23, of Norfolk, Va., and 22-year-old twins, Robert and Jeffery; three grandchildren, Adrienne, age 3 1/2, Gabriel, 2 1/2, and Hannah, age one month; her father and mother, John and Naomi Maurer of Nelsonville; five sisters, Joyce Smith of Greenville, Ind., Teresa Thompson of Columbus, Sandra Yorde of Logan, Martha Pitts of Logan and Mary Camp of Lancaster; a brother, Mike Maurer of Granville; a grandmother, Gladys Maurer of Nelsonville; 24 nieces and nephews and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Nathan; her grandfather, John B. Maurer; and grandparents Herman and Audrey Ogg.
A visitation will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Smith & Ogle Funeral Home, 101 W. Church St., Oxford. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Oxford United Methodist Church, 14 N. Poplar St., Oxford. Burial will be in Darrtown Cemetery.

Brent Nickels
Died: Tuesday, December 18, 2001
McARTHUR -- Brent Lee Nickels, 36, of McArthur, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at his residence.
Born Sept. 5, 1965 in Gallipolis, he was the son of Jerry L. and Roma Kay Swaim Nickels of McArthur.
Mr. Nickels worked for Lazarus and Adidas in clothing distribution. He was a member of First Christian Church and 1983 graduate of Vinton County High School and a graduate of ITT in Dayton. An Ohio State University Buckeye fan, he was also a Formula One and stock car racing fan and served as a safety observer at a turn for Mid-Ohio Race track one summer. He was also an avid golfer.
He is also survived by a sister, Audra (Lou) DiOrio and niece, Isabella DiOrio, both of Columbus; paternal grandfather Harvey Nickels of McArthur; and a special aunt and uncle, Gerry Lynn and Jack Fain of McArthur.
He was preceded in death by an uncle, Larry Swaim; and grandparents Helen Nickels and Tom and Thelma Swaim.
Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur with Pastor Rodney Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mabel Herron
Died: Monday, December 17, 2001
COOLVILLE -- Mabel Herron, 91, of Coolville, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Arcadia Nursing Center, Coolville. She had been a Coolville resident since 1988.
Born March 1, 1910, in Lottridge, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Arlia Bales Buck. Mrs. Herron was a retired office clerk for the Goodyear Plant in Akron and a graduate of Carthage-Troy High School. Her sister and brother-in-law, Nora and Earl Kincaide, raised her after the death of her parents when she was 6 years old.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jeffers of Coolville and Kathrine Jeffers of Columbus; four nieces, Katherine VanNess of Tuppers Plains, Millie and Bob Jenne of Coolville, Doris and Charles Combs of Columbus, and Irene Miller of Arizona; and a nephew, Raymond Graham of Columbus. She was the last immediate family member surviving.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Carleton Jeffers, to whom she was married 57 years; her second husband, Odie Herron; and four sisters.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville, with the Rev. Phil Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday beginning one hour prior to the service.
Billy Hill
Died: Monday, December 17, 2001
RACINE -- Billy C. Hill Sr., 69, of Racine, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Born April 18, 1932, in Letart Falls, he was the son of Ora E. Cramlet Hill of Marietta and the late Albert Babe Hill Jr.
Mr. Hill is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Badgely Hill; a daughter, Pamela Trammell; and sons Billy Hill Jr., Jeffrey Hill, Tim Hill and Chris Hill.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine, with burial in Letart Falls Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Helen Doss
Died: Monday, December 3, 2001
THE PLAINS -- Helen M. Doss, 86, of The Plains, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born July 27, 1915, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Valelia Campbell Welch.
There will be no calling hours or services.

Alvin Ray
Died: Monday, December 3, 2001
ATHENS -- Alvin Cotton Ray, 82, of Eaton Twp., Lorain County, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at his home, following a long illness.
Born in Meridan, Tenn., he had been a resident of Eaton Twp. since 1944 when he moved there from Crossville, Tenn. Mr. Ray worked for the Grafton Street Department for five years and retired in 1984. He had previously owned and operated Midview Growers Greenhouse in Eaton Twp., and worked at various local greenhouses.
He enjoyed gardening, cutting firewood, steam engine shows, draft horse pulls and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include six daughters, Jean McCamish of Athens, Carrie Friedenstab of Elyria, Patsy Blackburn of Loudonville, Dorothy Ray and Donna Ray of Grafton and Mary Milhoan of North Canton; a son, Kevin, of Grafton; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Eugene, of Middleburg Heights.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ella Ray, in 1988; infant twin sons; a grandson, James Alvin McCamish, in 1991; and three brothers and five sisters.
Services and burial will be in Crossville, Tenn.

Alice Wagner
Died: Monday, December 3, 2001
MIDDLEPORT -- Alice V. Wagner, 73, of Middleport, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis.
Born June 18, 1928, in Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Emma Wildman Searls.
She is survived by two sons, Thomas and Edward Sarver; and five daughters, Jackie White, Robin Wagner, Peggy Caton, Gloria Gibbs and Wanda Patterson.
Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home in Racine. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.

Adda Newell
Died: Sunday, December 2, 2001
THE PLAINS -- Adda Loyse Newell, 87, formerly of Long Bottom, Pleasant Hill, Athens and The Plains, died early Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2001, at Rock Springs Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.
Born Aug. 13, 1914, in Lonneyville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James W. and Jerushia Irene Wells Stalnaker. She attended school at Long Bottom, was formerly employed by East Elementary School and Ohio University Inn, and was a member of Athens First Christian Church.
She is survived by daughters Lois Ashcraft of Loris, S.C., Barbara (David) Lindsey of Pickerington, Carolyn (Max) Burchfield of Chapin, S.C.; a twin daughter and son, Joyce (Bob) Dailey of The Plains and Royce (Lucille) Newell of Reedsville; another son, Harold (Betty) Newell of Chester; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Guy (Evie) Stalnaker of Akron.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine, in 1988; two grandchildren; sisters Evelyn Sedgwick, Edith Curtis and Gertrude Tracy; and brothers Hubert, James and William Stalnaker.
Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with James Grooms officiating. Burial will be in Reedsville Cemetery.

Gerald Rife

ATHENS -- Gerald Neal Rife, 45, of the Athens area, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in Hocking County.
Born April 23, 1956, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Earl and Rebecca Stephenson Rife.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Sandrock Cemetery. There will be no calling hours observed.

Dorothy Trace
Died: Sunday, December 2, 2001
GLOUSTER -- Dorothy E. Trace, 82, of Glouster, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 9, 1919, in Athens County, daughter of the late Frank and Nora Nott McClelland. She was the wife of the late Herbert Trace, who passed away in 1983. She was a member of Glouster Church of Christ.
She is survived by a son, James (Marolyn) Trace of Hahira, Ga.; a daughter, Bonnie (Jack) Dawson of Glouster; three grandchildren, Bondina (Tim) Stone of Mineral Wells, W.Va., Herbert Trace of Griffin, Ga., and Tracy (Greg) Griffin of Nashville, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Brandon and Weston Griffin and Brianna Trace; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece and nephew, Thomas and Pauline Dew.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jo Ann Trace; brothers George Jack, James Sam and William McClelland; and sisters Anna Lewis, Elizabeth Wells and Olive Willis.
Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Glouster Church of Christ with Timothy McClelland and Dave Couch officiating. Interment will be in Hollister Cemetery.
