ATHENS - Thelma “Pauline” Barnhart, 48, of Athens, died at her residence early Wednesday morning, Oct. 29, 2003.
Born June 22, 1955, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late James Franklin Barnhart and Helen Barnhart Pike. She was a member of Lighthouse Baptist House and was employed in food service in the Athens area and domestic work.
She is survived by her fiance, Clifford E. Craft of Athens; sisters Mary (Terry) Powell of Venice, Fla., Ruth Kennedy of Portland, Ore., Betty (Harry) Smith of Athens, Kathy Fracasso of Santa Maria, Calif., Karen (Verl) Lamb of Middleport and Cheryl (Gordon) Williams of Coolville; brothers Gary (Wendy) Barnhart of Millfield and Tammy Pike of Venice, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Gerard P. Dunn of Athens and Darla Cadle of Albany.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Marlene Barnhart, and a special friend, Barb Holdcroft.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Eric Ross officiating. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery.

Age: 91
ATHENS - Bernice M. Fiscus, 91, of Berlin Center, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Alliance Community Hospital, following an extended illness.
Born May 11, 1912, in Berlin Center, she was the daughter of the late John and Clara Helsel Hartzell. She is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Fiscus. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Fiscus.
Burial will be in Athen Memory Gardens. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Gotschall Hutchison Funeral Home, Minerva.

MIDDLEPORT - Dwight Sherman Haley, 85, of Middleport, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, in Middleport.
Born Feb. 9, 1918, in Rutland, he was the son of the late George and Julia Romine Haley. He is survived by his wife, Eulonda Little Haley; a daughter, Elizabeth Moodispaugh; and sons Harold, Dwight Jr. and Mark Haley.
Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at Middleport Community Church. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery.

Garnet W. Trace

Age: 95
GLOUSTER - Garnet W. Trace, 95, of Glouster, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Born March 29, 1908, in Glouster, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Howard Waldeck. She was the wife of the late James L. Trace, and was the former owner and operator of Traceland Food Mart and Trace’s Dairy Bar in Glouster. She was a member of Glouster Church of Christ and Thea Chapter 192 Order of Eastern Star. Garnet enjoyed bowling and playing bingo.
She is survived by a son, Robert (Pauline) Trace of Glouster; a daughter, Janet Auer of Glouster; 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Brook of Terre Haute, Ind., and Marguerite Seifert of Toledo; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Jerry) Trace Miller of Columbus; good friends Norma Love and Linda Hartley; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Marvin and Jack Trace; a daughter, Jo Ann Tilley; two grandchildren, Michael Leffler and Erick Auer; three brothers, Gene, Paul and John Waldeck; two sisters, Marie Jones and Isabell Vaughn; two daughters-in-law, Mary Trace and Wanda Trace; and a son-in-law, Robert Tilley; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Trace.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Bishopville Church of Christ, with John Wright officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster.

Age: 22
MIDDLEPORT - Jesse J. Thomas, 22, of Middleport, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, as the result of a motorcycle accident in St. Clairsville.
Born May 11, 1981, in Point Pleasant, W.Va., he was the son of John S. Thomas of Middleport and Cheryl J. Thomas of Athens. He was a 2000 graduate of Meigs High School, a coal miner for Century Energy Corp. in St. Clairsville and a member of Heath United Methodist Church in Middleport.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Jenny Thomas of Middleport; a sister, Amy Radekin-Daugherty of Pomeroy; a stepsister, Eddena Russell of Racine; grandmothers, Evelyn Thomas and Jo Anna Ferguson of Middleport; uncles, Paul (Frances) Thomas of Middleport, Lloyd Stanley of Texas, Russell Stanley of Athens and Larry Stanley of Oregon; aunts, Dorothy (Jessie) Morris of Pomeroy, Jane (Jack) Griffin of Hillsboro, Eva (Homer) Griffith of Springfield, Pearl Glaze of Middleport, Lisa (Randy) Mitchell of Middleport, Laura (Joe) Davis of Middleport, Darsene Mansfield of Athens, Barbara Matthewson of Athens, Ellie Snow of Albany, Merrilyn Travis of Alexandria and Jo Cinda Ferguson of Middleport; nephews, Brandon Daugherty and Garis Ferguson; and nieces, Whitney Daugherty, Jenna Marshall and Katelyn Ferguson.

Born Sept. 9, 1926, in Greenup, Ky., he was the son of the late Fredrick and Goldie Thompson Ault. He is survived by sons Gerald L., Dennis J. and William Ault, and daughters Celesta Coates, Patricia Logan and Merri Amsbary. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena Ault.

Born July 14, 1925, in New Straitsville, he was the son of the late Dominic Jacob and Emma Catherine Fox Boyle. He is survived by two sons, Peter C. and Donald Eric Boyle, and a daughter, Jacinta A. Taulbee.
Funeral Mass will be Friday, 10 a.m., at St. John Catholic Church, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Born Feb. 7, 1928, in Letart, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel L. and Mabel Donahue Pickens.
She is survived by her husband, David E. Smith; a daughter, Mary Ann McKenzie; and sons David Lee, Samuel L. and Paul Lester Smith.

Liane L. Peerey
Died: Monday, October 27, 2003
Age: 75
NEW MARSHFIELD - Liane L. Peerey, 75, of New Marshfield, passed away on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.
She was born May 1, 1928, in Konstantinovka, Ukraine. Liane spent three years in Germany’s Dachau concentration camp.
Liane is survived and beloved by her husband, Gilbert F. Peerey; children Tammy L. Miller and family of Athens, John and Becky Peerey and family of New Marshfield, Elizabeth L. Dingman and family of Texas, and the family of the late Edwin G. Peerey of the Albany and Athens area; and grandchildren John and Joshua Franklin, Mary Ann Peerey, Jennifer Caine, Steven and Adam Peerey, Melissa and Amy Miller. She will be loved and missed greatly by all her family and friends.
At Liane’s request, she will be cremated and will be entombed at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.

CHAUNCEY - Ruth W. Pierce, 79, of Chauncey, passed away on Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born May 24, 1924, in Doanville, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Warren Frazee. Ruth retired from Ohio University in 1986.
She was a loving mother of two sons, Steve (Eileen) Pierce of Chauncey and Larry (Linda) of Chauncey, and a daughter, Karen Ross (Rick McKnabb) of Chauncey; grandchildren Norman (Brandi) Pierce of New Marshfield, Connie Pierce of Chauncey, Tracey (Chuck) James of Athens, Erin (Casey) Burdette of Chauncey, Terry (Mary Kay) Ross of Chauncey and Jodi (Jerry) Webster of Millfield. Ruth had 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; a brother, Robert (Alice) Frazee of Westerville; and four sisters-in-law, Nancy Frazee of Chauncey, Viola (Virgie) Six of Athens, Mary Pierce of Salem and Lucille Pierce of Millfield.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Herbert Pierce and Roy Hiles, and a brother, James Frazee.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Gary Alton officiating. Burial will be Hilltop Cemetery.

Betty Jane Snider

NEW LEXINGTON - Betty Jane Snider, 82, of Columbus, formerly of New Lexington, died at 5:38 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at St. Ann’s-Mount Carmel Hospital in Westerville.
Born June 27, 1921, in Cincinnati, he was the son of the late Roy and Gertrude Batze Snackenberg. Mrs. Snider was a retired secretary for New Lexington City Schools, a member of New Lexington First United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Carnation Chapter 167 of New Lexington, a member of the Advance Club of New Lexington, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Columbus and a member of the Ohio Telephone Pioneers.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sara Jane and Carl Kempa, and their sons, Brian (Stacey) and Brendan Kempa of Dayton; a son and daughter-in-law, John P. and DeLesia Snider, and their son, Joseph Snider of Columbus; a son and daughter-in-law, Philip M. and Bonita Snider and daughters, Marcy Snider, Natalie Snider and Carly Snider of West Bloomfield, Mich.; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Michael and Beverly Snider and daughters, Tracy and Joanie of South Pittsburgh, Tenn.; a sister, Rose Mary (John) Nolan of Locust Grove, Va.; two nephews of Virginia, a great-nephew and two great-nieces.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth B. Snider, on May 29, 1987; a stepgranddaughter and a nephew.
Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, 304 Mill St., New Lexington, with the Rev. Richard Newlon officiating. Burial will be in Somerset Cemetery, Somerset.

Clyde L. Canter
Died: Monday, June 23, 2003
Age: 72
CHAUNCEY - Clyde L. “Sonny” Canter, 72, of Chauncey, passed away on Monday, June 23, 2003, at his residence.
Born Dec. 22, 1930, in Chauncey, he was the son of the late Clyde and Ersel L. Wenger Canter. He was married to Barbara Staley Canter of Chauncey for 49 years.
He was retired from Meigs Mine 31. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he served both in Korea and Japan. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Service Star, Korean Bronze Service Star, Korean Presidential Citation and the Korean Service Medal for his service.
He attended Athens First Church of God, was a member of Athens American Legion and a life member of The Plains VFW. He was a founding member of Chauncey-Dover Lions Club, and a member of Trimble Masonic Lodge 557 Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio, United Mine Workers of America, Hocking Valley Sportsman’s Association and the National Rifle Association.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John Canter of Columbus, and Joe and Sheryl Canter of Chauncey; four grandchildren, Richard Seymour, Scott Seymour, Jake Canter and Tiffany Canter; a great-granddaughter, Julianna Seymour; two sisters, Virginia Hively of Reynoldsburg and Barbara Freeman of Columbus; a sister-in-law, Elaine Staley; lifelong friends Paul and Shirley Ross of Chauncey; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Canter.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, new addition, Nelsonville, where military graveside services will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.
