Age: 63
HAMDEN - Dale W. Hutchison, 63, of Hamden, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center in Jackson.
Born Feb. 15, 1940, in Jackson, he was the son of Leona Boyd Hutchison of Toledo and the late James W. Hutchison.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Harkins Hutchison; and a son, Tyron Hutchison.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Zion Cemetery, Vinton County, with military graveside services conducted by Vinton County VFW Post 5299. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur.
Thelma Shafer Conrath Metcalf
Died: Sunday, August 10, 2003
Age: 81
COOLVILLE - Thelma Shafer Conrath Metcalf, 81, of Coolville, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Arcadia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Dec. 9, 1921, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Thearle W. and Orpha Iota Bean Shafer. Mrs. Conrath Metcalf was an area businesswoman. She was owner of C&C Plumbing and West Breeze Mobile Home Park in Athens with her first husband, Carl Conrath.
Mrs. Conrath Metcalf is survived by daughters, Janet Antle of Hockingport, Nancy Everett of Nelsonville, Marilyn Mason of Palatine, Ill., Barbera Wright of Stanwood, Wash, and Karen Bergeron of Pinellas Park, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Trudy Conrath of Athens; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; five siblings, Clarice Bentley, Murna Terkelson, Vearle Shafer, Carl Shafer and Donna Lawhead; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas Metcalf and Carl Conrath; a son, Charles Conrath; and siblings, Donald and Bruce Shafer and Thea Shafer Peacock.
There will be no services or calling hours, per her request. Her ashes will be buried with her first husband in Alexander Cemetery, Hebbardsville.
Milford A. Bailey Sr.
Died: Sunday, August 10, 2003
Age: 86
ALBANY - Milford A. “Hap” Bailey Sr., 86, of Washington Road, Albany, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, at Russells Nursing Home in Albany.
Born April 13, 1917, in Chester, he was the son of the late Delbert and Della Foreman Bailey. Mr. Bailey was retired from Columbia Gas Co. as a lineman and was a parttime farmer, a member of Richland Avenue United Methodist Church and the Percheron Horse Association.
He is survived by his children, Milford (Nancy) Bailey Jr. of Mansfield, Lawrence (Flora) Bailey of Pomeroy, Grace Metcalf of Cynthiana, Ky., Steve (Sandy) Bailey of Albany and Ed (Theresa) Bailey of New Marshfield; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Eloise Shively of Delaware; and a brother, Floyd Bailey of Cincinnati.
Besides his parents, Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Esther Mussard Bailey, in 1994; four sisters, Lois Ramsey, Emma Hanson, Ora Wood and Mildred Griffith; four brothers, Harley, Lawrence, Everett and Leslie Bailey; and a son-in-law, Richard Metcalf.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home in Albany, with Pastor John Elswick officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mr. Bailey has donated his body to the Ohio University Willed Body Program, after which he will be interred with his wife at Temple Cemetery.
John B. Ley
Died: Saturday, August 09, 2003
Age: 79
ATHENS - Our community must endure the loss of a wonderful man, John B. “Jack” Ley of Athens. He left us on Aug. 9, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains, at the age of 79, after a long struggle with numerous health issues - none of which overcame his friendly and caring spirit.
He was born in Chauncey on July 9, 1924. During World War II, he was a pilot in the Air Force, flying in the China, Burma and India Theater. A star athlete at Chauncey Dover High School and Eastern Kentucky University, he was inducted into the Athens High School Hall of Fame (Chauncey H.S.).
He was a loving father of six children, Michael (Brenda) Ley of Columbia, S.C., Robert Ley of Farmington, N.M., Jacquie (Martin) Lindquist of Athens, Terri Whitlatch of Guysville, Philip (Teri) Ley of Millfield and Charles (Brandy) Ley of Cape Coral, Fla. He also had 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Jack spent many of his years as a teacher and coach in his hometown of Chauncey. In his way, he gave back to the youth of his community by bestowing on them his five qualities of pride, sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity and patriotism.
Jack continued to serve his community and family through his years at McBee Industries, as director of scheduling of Ohio University and as principal at Shade Elementary School, until his retirement. He was a member of Christ the King University Parish, Knights of Columbus, Athens Elks Lodge, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion and VFW Post 3477.
Jack also is survived by sisters, Helen Roberts of Athens and Patricia (John) Evans of Graville; three brothers, Paul (Christina) Ley of Athens, James Ley of Reynoldsburg, and Richard (Barbara) Ley of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a brother-in-law, Bob Wagner; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, the Robert Bray family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. and Opal Syx Ley; a sister, Joanna Wagner; a granddaughter, Fallen Star Lindquist; a brother-in-law, Lewis Roberts; a sister-in-law, Barbara Ley; and a niece, Diana Evans.
Jack will be missed by all those who knew him, and his name will always be spoken with the greatest respect.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Christ the King University Parish, with Fr. Martin Holler officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 3477 Honor Guards.
Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where vigil for the deceased will be held at 6:45.
George Guthrie

Age: 84
GUYSVILLE - George Guthrie, 84, of Guysville, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Born May 7, 1919, at The Garden, Ohio, he was the son of the late Frank and Luora Story Guthrie.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Humphrey Guthrie; a daughter, Christine (Paul) Perry of Cutler; a son, Lowell (Margie) Guthrie of Guysville; five grandchildren, Pam (Dean) Randall of Virginia, Paul (Shawn) Perry of Belpre, Patrick J. Perry the the U.S. Air Force, Charleston, S.C., Teresa Guthrie of Gallipolis, and Steven (Amber) Guthrie of Guysville; seven great-grandchildren, Cora, Olivia, Alex, Natalie, J.D., Kaylee and Ashton; and a host of beloved friends and neighbors.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Ralph and Carl; three sisters, Eva, Mable and Sarah; and a grandson, Lowell Guthrie. A sister, Helen, survived him by 12 hours.
He held a great regard for the land and country, living with a great admiration for horses.
Services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home in Coolville, with John Elswick officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.

Vonnie French Looney

PARKERSBURG - Vonnie French Looney, 110, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
She was born May 4, 1893, in Looneyville, Roane County, W.Va., and was a daughter of the late Jonathan D. and Fannie Reynolds McGlothlin. She was married to Asbury Looney, who preceded her in death in 1932. She was a homemaker most of her life except during World War II when she worked in Akron, Ohio, assembling airplane parts for the military.
She is survived by her four children, Jack Looney of Spencer, W.Va., Daniel Looney of Newton, W.Va., and Edith Bullard and Fannie Mills, both of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jackie Looney, and a grandson, Roger D. Sellers, II.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Zachary Drennen officiating. Burial will follow in Parkersburg Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from noon until the time of services.
Mary L. Benjamin Gifford

McCONNELSVILLE - Mary L. Benjamin Gifford, 79, of Malta, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003, at Mark Rest Center, McConnelsville.
Born July 16, 1924, in Pennsville, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Eva Carr Benjamin. She is survived by three sons, Steve, Tom and Rick; and two daughters, Diana Ross and Marie Logan.
Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Matheney Funeral Home. Burial will be in Pennsville Cemetery.

Luster H. Swart
Died: Tuesday, September 02, 2003
Age: 70
ATHENS - Luster H. Swart, 70, of 4129 Quaintance Road, Bucyrus, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, 2003, at Altercare of Bucyrus.
Born June 26, 1933, in Athens, he was the son of the late the Rev. Harry Martin and Grace “Anna” Peters Swart. He married Jeannette E. “Jean” Calentine Swart on Dec. 22, 1952, and she preceded in in death on Feb. 2, 2002.
A 1951 graduate of New Marshfield High School, he moved to Bucyrus in 1955. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from General Electric in Bucyrus.
Mr. Swart is survived by a son, Gregory A. Swart of Bucyrus; daughters and sons-in-law, Ronda S. and Charles Bell Sr. of Little Sandusky, and Valarie(cq) J. and Bryon Rogers of Edison; seven grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Marvin and Wilma of Brokensword and Robert and Karen of Nevada; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Walden Slagle of Waverly; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Danny and Patricia Calentine; sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Peggy Calentine of Sheridan, Wyo., Beverly and John Riffle of Phoenix, Ariz.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home, Bucyrus, with the Revs. Bob Jividen and Robert Swart officiating. Burial will be in Brokensword Cemetery.

Hazel M. Stout

Age: 88
ALBANY - Hazel M. Stout, 88, of Albany, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2003, at Russell Nursing Home, Albany.
Born Aug. 31, 1915, in Cheshire Twp., Gallia County, she was the daughter of the late Horton and Susie Darst Rife. She was a retired employee of Ohio University Food Services and a 50-year Grange member who belonged to Albany Grange 1611, Athens County Pomona Grange and the Ohio State Grange. She also was a member of Temple United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women Society, Albany Order of Eastern Star 558 and a former member of Minear Chapter 274 Order of Eastern Star of Guysville, and a member of Albany Senior Citizens, Athens County Senior Volunteer Program, AARP and PERI. She graduated from Cheshire High School.
She is survived by four nephews, Wallace (Wanda) Tate of Junction City, Douglas (Elizabeth) Rife of Dublin, Burdell Rife of Lakeview and Floyd (Mary Jane) Rife Jr. of Carey; two nieces, Janet (David) Fulton and Christine Napier of Griffin, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Pauline Rife of Griffin; and special friends Danny and Ruth Bernard of Stewart, and Judy and Rick Ellis ofAlbany.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W. Clifton Stout; three brothers, Floyd, Roy and Walter Rife; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Flossie Rife) Tate; and two sisters-in-law, Ina Rife and Martha Rife.
Services will be held Sunday, 2:30 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with the Rev. Edward Jones and Pastor Bert Christian officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wallace Tate Jr., Mike Sines, Dave Montle, Albert Keirns, Danny Bernard and Bruce Allen.

Paul E. Cottrill

Age: 69
RADCLIFF - The Rev. Paul E. Cottrill, 69, of Radcliff, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born Feb. 9, 1934, in Radcliff, he was the son of the late Frank W. and May B. Pendleton Cottrill. He retired in 1996 from Benedict Inc. after 23 years of service. He was pastor of Radcliff Fellowship Chapel and a 1951 graduate of Vinton Rural High School.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Norvella South Cottrill; a son, Eddie Cottrill of Radcliff; a daughter, Pam Tedrow of Athens; four grandchildren, Eddie Jr. and Staci Cottrill, and Chris and Kayla Tedrow; a brother, Virgil (Alice) Cottrill of Radcliff; sisters Minnie (Andrew) Wiseman of Athens, his twin sister Pauline Holliday of Albany, Shirley (Arthur) West of Albany and Beverly (Robert) Hamons of Port Clinton; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Radcliff Fellowship Chapel, with the Rev. A.B. Maloy officiating. Burial will be in Radcliff Cemetery.

SYRACUSE - Stuart Douglas Matson, the infant son of Norman S. and Rebecca D. Lavender Matson of Syracuse, was stillborn on Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, in Parkersburg, W.Va.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, 4 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home in Pomeroy. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.

Cecilia Mandrell
Died: Sunday, August 31, 2003
Age: 84
JACKSONVILLE - Cecilia Mandrell, 84, of North Canton, died Sunday evening, Aug. 31, 2003, at Aultman Hospital.
Born Sept. 11, 1918, in Jacksonville, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Earl and Elizabeth Exenkemper Mandrell. Ms. Mandrell retired from McKinley Air Transport, where she was employed as a charter manager. She was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in North Canton and North Canton Woman’s Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bobby in 1925, Bill in 1977, and Jim in 2001.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Mrs. James (Ruth Mary) Mandrell and Mrs. William (Dolores) Mandrell; nieces and nephews, Marilyn Elizabeth Mandrell Blethen, Robert Earl Mandrell, James William Mandrell, Cynthia Mandrell and Richard Wayne Mandrell; great-nieces and great-nephews, Stephanie, Heidi, Joni, Chad, Matthew and Callie; and several beloved cousins.
Services will be held Thursday, 10 a.m., at Karlo and Sons Funeral Home, 512 S. Main St., North Canton. Burial will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster.
