Age: 78

LORAIN - Robert E. Scheel, 78, of Amherst, a former Athens resident, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003.

Among his survivors are his wife, Jane Grover Scheel; sons Timothy R. and John B. Scheel; and a brother-in-law, B. Tad Grover of Athens.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Evangelical Church, Lorain. Arrangements are by Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst.

Contributions may be made to First Lutheran Evangelical Church, 603 Washington Ave., Lorain 44052.

David Junior Thompston
Died: Sunday, October 12, 2003
Age: 60

CHESTERHILL – David Junior Thompson, 60, of Chesterhill, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at his residence.

Born Sept. 22, 1943, in Chesterhill, he was the son of Ethel Holbert Thompson of Chesterhill and the late Chancie Thompson. She is survived by two daughters, Maurina Judson and Althea Thompson.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill, with burial in Mount Hermon Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Rex O'Brien
Died: Sunday, October 12, 2003
Age: 86

POMEROY - Rex O’Brien, 86, of Pomeroy, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, following an extended illness.

Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Flora, he was the son of the late John and Faye Miller O’Brien.

He was formerly employed by Columbia Gas of Ohio and was a member of Shade River F&AM Post 463, Harrisonville OES, Pomeroy Chapter 80 RAM, Bosworth Council Post 46 and Ohio Valley Commandery Post 024.

He is survived by two daughters, June (Paul) Eichinger of Pomeroy and Nancy (John) Rawlings of Stewart; a son, Larry (Phyllis) O’Brien of Racine; and seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Swartz O’Brien; brothers Frank, Vern and Charlie; and sisters Linnie Leifheit, Etta Cullums and Ada McClary.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy, with the Rev. Pete Shaffner officiating. Burial will be in Burlingham Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Elizabeth M. Roush
Died: Sunday, October 12, 2003
Age: 93

MIDDLEPORT - Elizabeth M. Roush, 93, of Middleport, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.

Born Sept. 10, 1910, she was the daughter of the late John and Madie Russell. She is survived by a daughter, Maida Long. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Roush.

Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Mildred Louise White
Died: Sunday, October 12, 2003
Age: 82

GUYSVILLE - Mildred Louise White, 82, of Guysville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at her home after an extended illness.

Born April 15, 1921, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Mary Weatherby Howell. She graduated from Bartlett High School in 1939 and worked during World War II as a typist in the State Office Building in Columbus. She married the Rev. Guy H. White in l944 and was a partner in his ministry. They also operated the White family farm.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Coleman Gallaher of Coolville, and Janet and Jim Evans of The Plains; a granddaughter, Julia Gallaher of Cincinnati; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lela Taylor of Grove City, and Maudie and Bob Wright of Columbus; and a brother-in-law, Gillian Taylor of Stewart. She is also survived by a special nephew, Wilbur White of Wheeling, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Guy H. White, in 1988; a son, David Allen White, in 1964; a brother, Melvin Howell; and a sister, Lucille Taylor.

Mrs. White was a Christian for 64 years and was a strong witness and inspiration to all who knew and met her, even throughout her illness. Mrs. White was an active member at Whites Chapel Wesleyan Church.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with the Rev. Phillip Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the Coolville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Appalachian Community Hospice.

John Dean Scherer
Died: Saturday, October 11, 2003
Age: 41

CHAUNCEY - John Dean Scherer, 41, of Opp, Ala., formerly of Chauncey, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, in Elba, Ala.

He was born March 10, 1962, in Columbus, the son of Clark and Virginia Scherer of Corning and Wilma and Charles Timberlake of Nelsonville. He was the husband of Margaret Griggs of Opp, Ala.

He was a member of Sons of AMVETS.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by four sons, John Scherer, Brian Chaney and Travis Scherer, all of Opp, and John Scherer of Columbus, Ohio; two daughters, Trisha Scherer of Columbus and Heather Scherer Combs of Peebles; two grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Kelly Buckta) Scherer of Nelsonville, and Kevin (Cheri) Scherer of McConnelsville; a stepbrother, Charles Timberlake Jr. of Nelsonville; a sister, Margaret (Billy) Shively of Matla; a stepsister, Treon (Clay) VanVranken of Albany; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Scherer.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery, Alexander Twp.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frederick Eugene Merriman
Died: Saturday, October 11, 2003
Age: 77

GLOUSTER - Frederick Eugene Merriman, 77, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at University Medical Center, Columbus.

He was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Plattsburg. son of the late Albert and Ethel Bartley Merriman. He was the husband of the late Jane Combs Merriman.

Services were Saturday at Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield. Arrangements were by Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster.

Adin Gabrielle Wells
Died: Friday, October 10, 2003

MCARTHUR - Adin Gabrielle Wells of Wellston died shortly after her birth Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital.

She was the daughter of Connie Ann Thacker and Jerry Dean Wells Jr. of McArthur.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Mace Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Fred Lee Cone
Died: Saturday, October 25, 2003
Age: 85

AMESVILLE - Fred Lee Cone, 85, of Fort Myers, Fla., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.

Born Oct. 12, 1918, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Frank and Hazel Cone. He is survived by a son, Wayne. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Nelle Conner Cone, and an infant son, Roger Lee.

John Wesley Seay

Age: 86

ATHENS - Former local minister the Rev. John Wesley Seay, D.D., 86, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.

He was the beloved husband of Laura A. Knoop Seay; the devoted father of Judith Carolyn (Gary) Brown, Margaret Ellen (Keith) Wagner and Mary Beth (Mike) Brestel; the loving grandfather of Jeffrey David (Karen) Wagner, Andrew John (Katie) Wagner and Rebecca Michelle Brestel; the great-grandfather of Stephen Jeffrey Wagner and Nathan Andrew Wagner; the dear brother of the late Paul H. (Jackie) Seay Jr.; and the dear uncle of numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Westwood United Methodist Church, 3460 Epworth Ave., Westwood.

Friends may call at Bolton and Lunsford Funeral Home, 3042 Harrison Ave., Westwood, on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley Hall Benevolent Care Fund, or the John Wesley Seay Endowment Fund for Pastoral Care.

Age: 84

LOGAN - Marvin E. Byers, 84, of Logan, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Anna’s Retirement Center, Logan.

Born April 4, 1919, in Logan, he was the son of the late James and Flora Erwin Byers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Marie Winchester.

Services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan.

Military services will be performed by the Combined Veterans Burial Detail of Hocking County.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ina Trout Kelly
Died: Friday, October 24, 2003
Age: 97

NEW MARSHFIELD - Ina Trout Kelly, 97, of New Marshfield passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at Kimes Nursing Center

Born March 25, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Lewis Trout and Clara Hawk Trout Elliott and was the last surviving member of her family.

She is survived by sisters in-law Ethel Elliott of New Marshfield, Mary Elliott of Chillicothe, Irene Trout of Lindenhurst, Ill., Delores Elliott of Lancaster and Lena Elliott of Goshen, Ind.; nieces Karen (Joe) Martin, Kendra (Ray) Secoy of New Marshfield, Clara Elliott of Nelsonville, Joelyn (Steve) Hopkins of San Antonio, Texas, Mary (Bill) Baker of Columbus, Virginia (Gene) Sparks of Logan, Stella Cornell of Lancaster, Pat (Bill) Staufer, Mary Ognibene, Colleen (Don) Wilkinson of Cleveland and Cathy Demer of South Carolina; nephews Bill (Vicki) Elliott of New Marshfield, David (Barb) Ramsey of Columbus and Fred Elliott of Goshen, Ind.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Kelly; three brothers, Ernest, Garrett and Dan Trout; a sister, Lela Ramsey; two half-brothers, Kenneth and Elmer Elliott; and four step-brothers, Earl, Howard, Paul and Fred Elliott.

Services will be Monday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with minister H. Willard Love officiating.

Burial will be in the New Marshfield Cemetery.
