Thelma M. Tignor

Age: 78
NELSONVILLE - Thelma M. Tignor, 78, of Nelsonville, died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, after a brave 52-day battle with stomach cancer.
Born on May 11, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Gilbert Parry. She was the widow of the late Donald G. Tignor, who passed away July 8, 2000.
A lifelong Christian, she was a former member of the First Christian Church in Nelsonville, and a current member of Carbon Hill Christian Church, where she enjoyed numerous activities with the church’s women’s group. Thelma was always active in the planning of her class reunions. She and her class had just celebrated 60 years. As one of a few active alumni of East School, she participated in all of the annual reunions. She was retired from the William Brooks Shoe Company.
Survivors include sons Steven of Georgia, David of Florida; daughter Beverly (Steven) Lynn of Lancaster; five grandchildren, Michelle (Chad) Nungester, Bryon Thomas, Erin and Ben Tignor, and Mike Lynn; great-grandchildren Joshua, Stephany and Tyler Hollingshead; a very special sister, Betty Bash, of Lancaster; sisters-in-law Wilma Tolliver and Margaret Howe of Nelsonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters Helen Bailey and Bessie Covert; and four infant sisters.
The family offers sincere gratitude for the many cards, calls and prayers received, and would like to especially acknowledge the support of hospital Chaplain Pastor Lowell and Pastor Mel Truex, of Faith Memorial Church.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Officiating will be a dear friend, Pastor Kerry Huffman, former children’s pastor at Faith Memorial Church in Lancaster, and currently a pastor with Community Church of Greenwood, Ind. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Walter R. Ervin
Died: Thursday, August 07, 2003
ATHENS - Longtime Athens resident and businessman Walter R. Ervin died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born Aug. 8, 1914, in Greenbriar County, W.Va., he was the son of James B. and Irene Shafer Ervin. His parents and three sisters, Janice, Cassie and Hester; brother, Durwood “Doby”; and an infant brother predeceased him.
Walter was a decorated World War II veteran who enlisted on Dec. 8, 1941, and served in the North African and European Theaters, where he was held as a prisoner of war for five months.
Upon returning to Athens after the war, he resumed his work at Athens Ice and Storage Co., where he rose through the ranks to manager. When the company facilities were sold to Ohio University, he became self-employed and operated Culligan Water Conditioning of Athens from the 1950s-’70s and Stimson Plumbing and Heating from the ’60s-’70s, then worked as an independent salesman in later years.
Throughout his life, he was very active in civic and church organizations. Walter was a charter member and past president of Athens Lions Club; a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the district council executive board; and sat on The Plains Local and Athens City School Boards for a combined 14 years.
Mr. Ervin was one of the founding members and was instrumental in writing the constitution for Athens County Historical Society. He also was active in St. Paul’s Church and School and, more recently, was involved with Christ the King Catholic Church, serving as a lay minister.
Mr. Ervin is survived by his devoted wife of 16 years, Lela; Lela’s daughter, Sandy (David) Swisher, and their children, Robert and Kimi of Middleport.
Walter’s wife, Helen Sheridan, preceded him in death in 1984.
He also is survived by three children, Harriet (Walter) Wharton of Grayson, Ga., Allan T. Ervin of Rockbridge, and Martha Dittiacur of Columbus; three grandsons, Christopher M. Harris (Vickie and son Houston) of Lawrenceville, Ga., Theodore B. Harris of Santa Monica, Calif., and Michael K. Dittiacur of Fairborn.
The following children also called Walter a “grandfather”: Emily, Andy, Becky and Will Tompkins, John Robert and Benjamin Colvin, children of Jane and Harry Tompkins, Sharon and Bob Colvin.
The family would like to specifically thank Libbey Fulton and publicly extend thanks to many unnamed friends for their support during Walter’s long illness.
It is also appropriate that we express appreciation to a multitude of past and present working personnel at Hickory Creek for their genuine care and comfort-giving.
Funeral Mass will be recited on Monday, at 11 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church, conducted by Fr. Marti Holler. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery, with military rites conducted by K.T. Crossen Post 21 and Athens VFW.
Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home on Sunday, from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., where Vigil for the Deceased will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Geraldine Eblin

Age: 90
ATHENS - Geraldine “Jerry” Eblin, 90, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at her home in Athens. She was the widow of Dr. Lawrence Powell Eblin, emeritus professor of chemistry at Ohio University.
Born April 15, 1913, in Beatrice, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Maurice Blakely and Frances Hoover Ayers. A 1932 graduate of Belpre High School, she attended Mountain State Business College and graduated from Ohio University in 1954.
She had many friends and participated in many organizations, among them the Ohio University Women’s Club, OU Women’s Book Club, OU Women’s Stitch and Chat Group, OU Emerit Association, Athens Garden Club, Higley Study Circle, Tuesday Club, Friends of Trisolini Gallery, PEO Sisterhood Chapter DD, First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star 175 of Athens and several bridge clubs.
She is survived by a son, James Blakely (Jane Herbst) Eblin of Corvallis, Ore.; grandchildren Edwin Neil Eblin and Cynthia Diane Eblin, both of Columbus; a brother, Howard Blakely (Betty) Ayers of Belpre; a sister, Elinor Imogene (Dr. M.V.) Anders of Statesboro, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Lucy (Frank) Campbell.
Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where Athens Chapter 175 Order of Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at 7.

Zelma O. Trautman

LOGAN - Zelma O. Trautman, 98, of Logan, formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, in Logan.
Born June 17, 1905, in Tiffin, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Lydia Jane Friend Brown. She is survived by a daughter, Janice S. Gault.
Services will be Sunday, 8 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Don R. harmony

Age: 78
NELSONVILLE - Don R. Harmony, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at Riverside Hospital, Columbus.
Born Feb. 9, 1925, in Nelsonville, he was the son of Adrian “Babe” and Alma Harmony. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 543 BPOE Nelsonville, and Nelsonville Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by daughters Susan Harmony and Jane Harmony, both of Nelsonville; grandchildren Edward (Jeannie) Gray, Christopher (Diane) Gray and Erin Gray; and a sister, Kay (Richard) Schorr of Lancaster.
A service will be held Saturday, noon, at Woodyard East Chapel, 2300 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus.

Michael Mann
Died: Wednesday, August 06, 2003
Age: 43
GLOUSTER - Michael “Dude” Mann, 43, of Glouster, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital, Athens.
Born Oct. 12, 1959, in Germany, he was the son of Lee and Gisela Boringer Mann of Georgia. Dude fought in Iraq during Desert Storm Gulf War I, as an infantryman, and was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. During his military career, he was a paratrooper, sniper and master gunner. After retiring from the Army, he attended Texas Central College, Columbus State and Hocking College. He had been the shooting sports director at Boy Scout Camp Seven Ranges, first aider at Chief Logan Boy Scout Camp and naturalist at Camp Ohio. He was a former assistant scoutmaster for Troop 98 of Gahanna. He was an avid musician, both singing and playing guitar.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dani Doran Mann of Glouster; and a daughter, Daisy Mann of Glouster. He was the well-loved son-in-law of Norm and Marian Doran; brother-in-law to Nan and Tom Wright, Mike Doran, Pat and Renee Doran, and Katey Powell; uncle to Casey, Kristen and Cuyler Wright, Marissa, Norman, Meggan and Holly Doran, Jennifer Utzinger, Annie and Roy Powell; and a special friend to “son” Evan Irwin. He also is survived by a sister, Heidi Elliott, and nieces, Trixie and Leeann Elliott of Georgia; and a brother, Rick Mann of Germany.
Dude donated his body to the FBI Forensic Anthropology Center, University of Tennessee.

LOGAN - Emma E. Jones, 105, of Logan, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003, in Logan.
Born Sept. 18, 1897, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late David and Jennie George Frey.
She is survived by daughters Jennie Mae Zimmerman, Mabel Justus, Annabel Warthman and Joan Rempel.
Services will be Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

RACINE - Shirley M. Sloter, 84, of 47877 Route 124, Racine, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at her residence.
Born Dec. 20, 1918, in Kenmore, she was the daughter of the late Earl A. and Macie Amelia Louden Wehr. She was a homemaker and an avid country music fan who enjoyed traveling and listening to family and friends perform.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clifford Sloter; a brother, Earl Wehr; a half sister, Marian Perry; a daughter-in-law, Mary Cleland Sloter; a son-in-law, Ralph Harden; a grandchild, Linda Kay Sloter; and a grandson-in-law, Chris Meek.
Surviving are daughters Jean Cleek and friend Max Sampson of Racine, Amy Sloter and friend Doug Stone of Columbus, Retha Murray of Thornville and Sharon (Norman) Hendrickson of Marietta; sons Marion “Buzz” (Iva) Sloter of Albany, Dale Sloter of Florida, Larry (Kelly) Sloter and Randy (Terry) Sloter, both of Marietta; a sister, Imogene (Norman) Bromley of Stoneboro, Pa.; 28 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine, with the Rev. Paul McGuire officiating. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Long Bottom.

McCONNELSVILLE - Halle A. Short, 2 1/2-week-old daughter of John and Erica “Kati” Short of McConnelsville, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at Children’s Hospital, Columbus. She was born July 18 at University Hospital, Columbus.

Born Dec. 18, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Naomi Kirby Roush. She is survived by a son, Robert, and was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Harley L. Brown.

GLOUSTER - Ruth J. (Norris) Kloh, 80, of Glouster, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
She was born May 29, 1923, in Athens, the daughter of the late William and Mae Losey Norris. She was a retired secretary and treasurer of Trimble Local Schools, a member of Jacksonville United Methodist Church and of Three-Star Senior Citizens in Glouster.
She is survived by a son, Charles Patrick Hebert of Dayton; a daughter, Rita (Broc) Irwin of Glouster; three grandchildren, Lorrie (Mike) Vess, Wendy (Dave) Warren and Adam Irwin; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Russell Norris of Glouster.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Hebert; her second husband, Clifton Kloh; a granddaughter, Amy Irwin; a brother, Bill Norris; and a sister, Kathleen Norris.
Funeral services will be Monday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, with Roger Powell and Adam Irwin officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster.
