William Engle
Died: Monday, October 14, 2002
Age: 78
TIFFIN -- William "Bill" Engle, 78, formerly of Tiffin, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002.
Mr. Engle was a World War II veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. He was a life member of VFW 7174, American Legion Post 21, Masonic Lodge 77 F&AM, Tiffin, and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo.
He is survived by a sister, Dorothy; a brother, Robert; seven nieces and nephews; and six great-nieces and nephews.
Mr. Engle requested cremation with no visitation or memorial services. Private burial will be held in Greenlawn Cemetery in Tiffin.
Ohio Cremation and Memorial Society and Rodman Funeral Service assisted with the arrangements.
Thom Wright II
Died: Monday, June 3, 2002
ATHENS -- Thom Wright II, 22, of Lenox-New Lyme Road, Jefferson, died Sunday afternoon, June 30, 2002, in a drowning accident in Louisville, Ky.
Thom was born March 14, 1980, in Madison, son of Thomas D. and Nancy L. Austin Wright. He had been a Geneva and Jefferson resident all of his life. He was a 1998 graduate of Jefferson Area High School and a 2002 graduate of Ohio University with a degree in education. Thom just took a position in Washington, D.C., teaching inner-city kids how to prepare for college.
Thom was a member of Jefferson United Methodist Church, where he was involved in the Youth Group, Inspiration, John's Island Mission Team and supporting the homeless at St. Herman's House in Cleveland. He volunteered at the Salvation Army.
During his high school career, Thom was involved in Model U.N., wrote for the school newspaper, ran cross-country, was in the National Honor Society and attended Kent State University during his junior and senior years. He loved to play the guitar and was in many local bands and also bands at Ohio University. At OU, he was a member of Positive Action, a politically active group for social change; CARE, an organization to assist individuals to become better teachers; and DIY conferences, people sharing to increase individual strengths. He worked in the summer tutoring program in Athens, was a strong supporter of women's rights, and was a considerate and compassionate individual. His gifts to family and friends always were unique and meaningful. He was a true vegetarian and a minimalist. Thom loved to cook, and enjoyed his music and being with his family and friends.
He is survived by his parents, Thomas D. and Carole A. Wright of Jefferson, and Nancy L. Austin of Austinburg Twp.; a lifelong friend, Jann E. Rahe of Austinburg; a brother and sister-in-law, Mark J. and Susana I. Yourcheck of Ellicott City, Md.; a sister, Tanya J. Yourcheck of Baltimore, Md.; grandparents Betty L. Austin of Geneva and Ann M. and Les C. Phillips of Jefferson; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grandparents Samuel A. Austin, and Orville R. and Rachel Wright.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Jefferson United Methodist Church, 125 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with the Rev. Meredith Coleman of the church and the Rev. Glen Warner of Second Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Geneva.
Calling hours will be Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fleming Funeral Home Inc., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Thom Wright Educational Scholarship Fund; envelopes will be at the funeral home and church.
Brent Carpenter
Died: Sunday, June 2, 2002
ALBANY -- Brent Weber Carpenter, 48, of Albany, died unexpectedly at his home late Saturday evening, June 2, 2002.
Born Dec. 10, 1953, in Athens, he was the son of Grace Miller Carpenter of Athens and the late Paul W. Carpenter Sr. He was a construction worker and a former employee of the Athens Kroger store. He was a 1976 graduate of Willoughby South High School, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. He attended Athens schools prior to moving to Willoughby. He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan, a member of Albany Veterans of Foreign Wars, an Army veteran and a member of the Ohio National Guard.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his former wife, Clara Topolosky Carpenter of Athens; a son, Todd Carpenter of Athens; a sister, Paula (Rick) Bragga of Athens; a brother, Paul W. Carpenter Jr. of Athens; nephews Paul W. Carpenter III of Mandeville, La., Clinton W. Carpenter of Athens and Jay Bragga of Columbus; a niece, Sara (Michael) Mulcahy of Savannah, Ga.; great-nephews, Justin Carpenter of Mandeville and Eric Mulcahy of Savannah, Ga.
He was preceded in death by a special friend, Diana Foss.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at Athens First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel officiating.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services. A reception will immediately follow the service in the church's fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cleveland Browns Foundation (Education of Disadvantaged Youth in Northeast Ohio) 1065 W. Third St., Cleveland, 44114.

Ralph Harder
Died: Sunday, June 2, 2002
RACINE -- Ralph J. Harder, 38, of Morning Star Road, Racine, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at his residence.
Born Jan. 6, 1964, in Pomeroy, he was the son of the late Bob and Dorothy Circle Harden of Racine.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Jean Sloter Cleek Harden; and two stepchildren, Jeremy and Jenny Cleek.
Services will held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home in Racine. Burial will be in Carmel Cemetery.

Nancy Johnson
Died: Saturday, June 1, 2002
REEDSVILLE -- Nancy Louise Johnson, 52, of Reedsville, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at her residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1949, in Gallipolis, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Edwin and Esta Glover White. She is survived by daughters Sharon Barber, Karen Johnson and Debbie Moodispaugh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Frank Johnson Sr., and an infant son.
Services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at White Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial will be in Pine Street Cemetery, Gallipolis.

Ralph Burgess
Died: Friday, May 31, 2002
AMESVILLE -- Ralph J. Burgess, 79, of Amesville, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Aug. 6, 1922, in Gore, Ohio, he was the son of the late Ralph and Clara Bartlett Burgess. He retired from General Motors Corp. in Columbus, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Louise and Patricia Jean Burgess, both of Athens; a sister, Mary Pinkerman of The Plains; a brother, Charles D. (Joyce) Burgess of Amesville, and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Burgess, in 1998; two brothers, Frank and Walter Burgess; and a sister, Eileen Vance.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor James Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Mound Hill Cemetery with military services provided by the Athens American Legion and Athens VFW.

Paula Crane
Died: Friday, May 31, 2002
GALLIPOLIS -- Paula Marie Fout Crane, 37, of Gallipolis, formerly of Ray, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, following years of illness.
Born Sept. 13, 1964, in Ross County, she was the daughter of Paul F. Fout and F. Margaret Fout Caldwell, both of Ray. On May 29, 1992, she married Michael H. Crane, who survives.
She also is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Chrystal D. and David P. Dixon Jr. of Chillicothe; two sons, Robert K. Stoneburner Jr. of Ray and Derrick F. Stoneburner at home; two stepsons, Kevin L. Crane of Lewisburg, W.Va., and Joshua E. Crane of Bluefield, W.Va.; a special grandson, David P. Dixon III; her father- and mother-in-law, Harold E. and C. Jean Crane of Lewisburg, W.Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Mark D. and Rebbeca Fout of Ray; two sisters, Loretta L. Henry of Wellston and R. Marlene Fout of Jackson; a grandfather, Dale S. Fout of Ray; six nices and nephews; and numerous, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents David A. and Ollie M. Archey, and paternal grandmother Erma M. Fout.
Services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston, with Brother Rondall Walker officiating. Burial will be in Boblett Cemetery.

Bonnie Neff
Died: Friday, May 31, 2002
LOGAN -- Bonnie S. Neff, 59, of Logan, died Friday, May 31, 2002, in Columbus.
Born Dec. 6, 1942, in Logan, she was the daughter of the late John W. and Bertha M. Lane Schein. She is survived by sons David A. Neff Sr. and Michael R. Neff, and a daughter, Melissa A. Neff.
Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Logan Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home on Tuesday anytime after 9 a.m., with the family in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Visitation also will be held at the church on Wednesday, one prior to services.

Kay Arnold
Died: Thursday, May 30, 2002
NELSONVILLE -- Kay Arnold, 20, of Nelsonville, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh.
She was born Aug. 20, 1981, in Athens County, and attended Nelsonville First Christian Church.
She is survived by her parents, Steve and Sara Pickett Arnold of Nelsonville; two sisters, Heather Arnold of Lancaster and Miranda Arnold of Nelsonville; paternal grandparents Charles and Ellen Arnold; her fiance, James Brooks of Nelsonville; and special friends Samantha and Tara. She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Mary and Marion Pickett.
Funeral services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Donald Davisson officiating.
