Donna Mae Brown
Died: Thursday, December 05, 2002
Age: 83
ATHENS -- Donna Mae Brown, 83, the wife of former Athens County Sheriff Paul E. Brown Sr., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at her winter home in Zephyrhills, Fla., after a short illness.
Born March 3, 1919, in Hollister, she was a graduate of Hollister High School and the first female in Athens County to graduate from the 300-hour Ohio Peace Officers Basic Training School. She served as a deputy and jail matron while her husband was sheriff.
Donna lived 53 years at the family farm in Dover Twp., Route 13, where she and her husband founded and operated Sunnyvale Tree Farm and Nursery for 35 years.
Donna was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, as well as the Trinity Sunday School Class and Circle 3 of the WSCS. She served with great joy as wedding coordinator at the church and helped many Athens brides achieve the wedding of their dreams. She was adviser for the Methodist sorority Kappa Phi. Other activities included former den mother of Cub Scout Pack 56 and Athens Band Boosters from 1957-68.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Paul E. Brown; three children and their spouses, Donna Jo Parsons of St. Petersburg, Fla., Paul Jr. and Sheila of Cranberry Twp., Pa., and Robert and Kathy of Zephyrhills; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Brian and Bunny Parsons of Cleveland, Elizabeth Leeanne Egan of St. Petersburg, Thomas and Susan Parsons of Riverview, Fla., Edward and Cindy Brown of Fulton, Mo., Molly and Lane Haley of Perryton, Texas, Marie and Brian Forst of Etiwanda, Calif., and Renee and Greg Brothers of Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Egan, Thomas McKinley Parsons, Samuel Parsons, Sydney Parsons, Raphael Brothers, Sallie Mae Brown, Edison Brown and Charlotte Parsons; a brother, Kenneth (Margaret) Humphrey of Logan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William McKinley and Essie Cavey Humphrey; a brother and sister-in-law, Howard and June Humphrey; maternal grandparents Anna Mae and John Cavey; and paternal grandparents Evan and Jenny Humphrey, all of Glouster.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. Denver Dodrill officiating. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery.

Delbert L. Kuhn
Died: Tuesday, December 03, 2002
Age: 85
Nelsonville -- Delbert L. "Deb" Kuhn, 85, of 42 Pine Grove Drive, Nelsonville, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus.
He was born in Nelsonville on Nov. 14, 1917, and was the son of the late James and Goldie Thompson Kuhn. Deb was a 1936 graduate of Nelsonville High School. He was a freshman walk-on member of the 1936 OSU football team and received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from OSU in 1940.
After graduation, Columbus and Southern Ohio Electric Co. employed Deb in Nelsonville until he joined the Air Corps in 1940. Deb was a first lieutenant in the 5th Air-Force 22 Bomb Group serving in the South Pacific. During his military time of 43 months, he served 550 combat hours as a navigator. He received the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while participating in aerial flight.
From 1947-74, he owned and operated Kuhn's Clothing. Many young men received the opportunity for part-time employment and have credited their successes from the guidance and friendship that Deb extended.
He served as city auditor from 1950-58, was employed at the former Wm. Brooks Shoe Co. as shipping manager and was manager of the Logan and Athens Bureau of Employment Services. In 1967, he was offered a position with Peoples Bank of Nelsonville. He served the bank in many capacities and was a member of the board of directors. He retired in 1982; however, he remained with the bank as an active consultant until 1996.
He was a charter member of the Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce and member of The Parade of the Hills Committee. He served as a trustee on the former Mount St. Mary Hospital Board and was appointed by Gov. George Voinovich to serve on the Financial Advisory Committee for the city of Nelsonville.
In 1992, he presented an idea to the Nelsonville High School Alumni Association to establish a scholarship fund. Through the scholarship, he hoped to afford students the opportunity to expand their education while perpetuating the memory of his high school alma mater. To date, more than $100,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Nelsonville-York graduates.
He was a member of Nelsonville First Christian Church, where he served on the church board and was a former member of the choir. He also was a member of the Nelsonville Rotary Club, Elks Lodge 543, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3467, Masonic Lodge 157, the Central School Bell Tower Committee and the Nelsonville High School Restoration Foundation.
Deb played an active part in various youth athletics for more than 25 years and inspired many a young player in all fields of athletics.
He was a director of the Nelsonville High School Alumni Association, of which he was a past president, having served three terms -- the most recent in 2002. He was named Rotary Man of the year in 1993 and was the recipient of the Roland Pierce Citizenship Award in 1994 and the Nelsonville Area Chamber of Commerce Person of the year in 1995. In addition, he was named in 1995 the Southeast Ohio Regional Council Citizen of the year. He was a national semi-finalist for the Colonel's Way Award, a national contest sponsored by Kentucky Fried Chicken that honors outstanding seniors for their late-in-life accomplishments. In 1999, he was presented the Allohak Council Distinguished Citizen award from the Boys Scouts of America.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Cope Kuhn; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Grace Windle of Nelsonville, Mary Margaret Warner of Columbus, Ruth Shaw of Lancaster, and Donna Jean and Dr. Robert Seiple of Dublin; sisters-in-law Maxine Cope Wolfe of Nelsonville and Janet P. Cope of Gaithersburg, Md.; brothers-in-law James (Katie) Cope of Estes Park, Colo., and Bob Hutchins of West Farmington, Maine; godchildren JR, Debra Mary and Keller Blackburn; and many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Joann; a sister, Nellie LeFevre; brothers Dwight and Charles; a sister-in-law, Janet Cope Hutchins; and brothers-in-law Austin B. Cope and Kenneth W. Cope.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Don Davisson and Fr. John Mucha officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m., and Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Elks services will be conducted Friday at 7:30 p.m.

William W. Ricketts
Died: Tuesday, December 03, 2002
Age: 85
SHAWNEE -- William W. "Bill" Ricketts, 85, of New Lexington, formerly of Shawnee, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Genesis Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville.
Born May 17, 1917, in Shawnee, Mr. Ricketts was a businessman in Shawnee for many years, owning both Bill's Lunch and Bill's Sohio. He was employed by Hannah Brothers' Furniture and the Ohio Highway Patrol. He was a 50-year member of Shawnee Masonic Lodge 526 F&AM, a 50-year member of Shawnee Blue Bell Chapter 151 OES, a member of Hocking Valley Antique Auto Club and NCHA. He was a former mayor of Shawnee and a central committeeman for the GOP. He was a World War II Army veteran, and a member of the DAV and VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Randolph Ricketts; three daughters, Sue (Chuck) Peart of Glouster, Roberta (Ted) Fisher of Corning and Debbie Ricketts of New Lexington; two sons, Skip (Judy) Ricketts of Logan and Ron Ricketts of The Plains; stepsons Ben (Diane) Owens of Kirkersville, Greg (Peggy) Owens of New Lexington and Wayne Owens of Shawnee; a stepdaughter, Karen Fulk of New Lexington; brothers Robert, Richard, Gene and Rex Ricketts; sisters Virginia Garcia and Margaret McGreevy; a brother-in-law, Bill Smith; special friends George Randolph and Freda Thompson; and nine grandchildren, eight stepgrandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel W. and Hazel Starner Ricketts; a brother, Pearl Ricketts; and his first wife, Betty Smith Ricketts.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Shawnee United Methodist Church, East Walnut Street. Interment will be in Shawnee Cemetery.
Friends may call at J.E. Humphrey Funeral Home, 118 W. Walnut St., Shawnee, today after 2 p.m., where Eastern Star services will be held at 7 p.m. and Masonic services will be held at 7:30.

Martha V. Ford

Age: 80
RAY -- Martha V. Ford, 80, of Ray, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at University Hospital, Columbus.
Born Jan. 26, 1922, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Lawyer and Eliza Gilman Deskins. She is survived by sons Arnold Earles, William Earles, Charles Ford and James Ford; and daughters Joyce Stolarski and Judith Spears. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett Ford Jr.
Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston, with burial in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.

William D. Burkhart
Died: Monday, December 02, 2002
Age: 67
ATHENS -- William D. Burkhart, 67, of Athens, died Monday morning, Dec. 2, 2002, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, as the result of an automobile accident.
Born March 27, 1935, in Jackson Twp., Cambria County, Pa., he was the son of the late Leroy L. and Laura B. Schoop Burkhart. A resident of the Athens area since 1970, he was employed in construction and coal mining working with Williamson Slope and Shaft Co. Mr. Burkhart was a member of Athens Redmen Lodge.
He is survived by a beloved friend, Hazel Calendine, and her family; three daughters and sons-in-law, Buni and James Tabb of Nashville, Tenn., Brenda and Gibby Posea of Johnstown, Pa., and Tammy and Virgil McLain of New Marshfield; a son, Todd Burkhart of New Marshfield; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Little and Alma Burkhart of Mineral Point, Pa.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Newcomer; and brothers George and Samuel Burkhart.
Services will be conducted Wednesday, at 8 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with Pastor Bill O'Brien officiating. Burial will be held Thursday in Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, Pa.

Clyde L. Harold
Died: Monday, December 02, 2002
Age: 93
NELSONVILLE -- Clyde L. Harold, 93, of Nelsonville, passed away on Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center in Logan.
Born March 30, 1909, in Longstreth, he was the son of the late John and Ida Pearson Harold. He was the widower of Margaret Finn Harold. He was retired from Karnes Coal Mine, where he worked for 43 years. He was a member of the UMWA and The Old Timers Baseball Association.
He is survived by a son, Sandy (Becky) Harold of Columbus; two daughters, Linda Vickroy of Lancaster, and Cheryl (Mike) Kinneer of Nelsonville; and seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Vera Morrison, Alverta Dupler and Charlotte Seals.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with Pastors Steve and Mark Dupler (great-nephews) and Pastor Seth Kinneer (grandson) officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Verdun Love
Died: Thursday, November 28, 2002
Age: 84
GLOUSTER -- Verdun "Bob" Love, 84, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., passed away on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Sun City Community Hospital, Sun City, Calif.
Born Sept. 4, 1918, in Glouster, he was the son of the late Carl and Mary Robinson Love. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.
He was a beloved uncle to Norma Shepard of Florida, Mary (Max) Walton of Medina and Carolyn Milhoan of Glouster. He also leaves a companion, Dolores Bushell, and a special friend, Norma Green, both of California.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and a nephew, Arthur Shepard.
Services will be held Friday, 2:30 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, with John Wright officiating. Interment will be at Glouster Cemetery, with military services conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

E. Rosemary Cook Neese

Age: 75
ALBANY -- E. Rosemary Cook Neese, 75, Albany, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Ohio State University Hospital, Columbus.
She was born in Columbus on July 15, 1927, the daughter of Clyde J. and Ruth (nee Cook) Cook. On June 21, 1947, she was united in marriage in Columbus with Elwood A. Neese of Sheboygan, Wisc.
Besides her parents and husband, she lost children Karen Michelle, age three weeks; Michael Todd, 1 1/2 days; Jeffrey David, 27 months; and Kevin Joseph Neese, J.D., age 39 years.
She is survived by her adored son, Douglas Gregg Neese, Ph.D.; grandchildren Patrick Ian Neese and Tasha Andre Neese; as well as her daughter-in-law, Fariba Neese; sister Bonnie Jean Bulloch and brother Clyde J. Cook Jr. She also is survived by Roe Estep, sister of love and Kira.
Although limited in formal education to a few credits, she was proud of her auto-didactic education.
Other than being the fortunate mother of two good and decent men, her best accomplishment was in the field of genealogy and her contribution can be found in her book, "The Continuance," published in 1993. Her other worthwhile contribution is bequeathing her body to the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Kevin Joseph Neese Memorial Scholarship Fund, Kewaskum High School, Kewaskum, Wisc., 53040.

LOGAN -- Donna F. Meadows, 69, of Logan, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.
Born Nov. 30, 1932, in Bremen, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mary Devol Wagner. She is survived by her husband, George W. Meadows.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Chester Wayne Meadows

Age: 73
RAY -- Chester Wayne Meadows, 73, of Ray, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center, Jackson.
Born May 20, 1929, in Leo, he was the son of the late Harry and Estella Tennant Meadows.
He is survived by his wife, Rhoda Wheeler Meadows; and children Robert, Herb and Walter Meadows, Virginia "Jenni," Estella Clary, Margaret Stiffler and Mary Anne.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at the Jenkins Funeral Chapel, Wellston. A private burial will be at Ray Cemetery at a later date.
