WELLSTON -- Cedric L. Hill, 82, of Wellston, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Ohio State University Hospital in Columbus.
Born May 10, 1920, in Barberton, he was the son of the late George "Holly" and Merle Ervin Hill. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Claar Hill; and a son, John Hill.
Services will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, with military services conducted by American Legion Post 371 of Wellston.

William Culwell
Died: Tuesday, November 26, 2002
Age: 88
ALBANY -- William "Bill" Culwell, 88, of Albany, living in Satsuma, Fla., died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his residence, following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 20, 1914, in Johnson County, Ky., he was the son of the late Jerry and Madge Culwell. He was a retired farmer and a World War II Navy veteran.
He is survived by two daughters, Erma Lee (Alfred) Rice of Satsuma and Ruby (Dwaine) Jordan of Albany; a brother, Edward Culwell of St. Augustine, Fla.; a sister, Nevel Blanton of Jackson; and five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Hazel Tackett Culwell, in October 2000; and three sisters, two brothers and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Edward Jones officiating. Burial will be in Temple Cemetery.

Helen Louise Highland Byers
Died: Monday, November 25, 2002
Age: 84
LOGAN -- Helen Louise Highland Byers, 84, of Logan, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 20, 1918, in Louis County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Henry and Laura Allman Garton. She was an administrative assistant for Southeast Academy in Kissimmee, Fla.
She is survived by sons Kenneth E. (Carolyn) Highland of Nelsonville and Kendall L. (Glenna) Highland of Logan; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; and sisters Betty Colerider of Florida, Dorothy Wills and Ann Reppert of Baltimore, Md.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Byers; a daughter, Kendra Lu Highland; and four brothers.
Graveside services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Knollwood Cemetery.

Eleanor "Ruth" Hooper

Age: 79
THE PLAINS -- Eleanor "Ruth" Hooper, 79, of The Plains, died early Monday afternoon, Nov. 25, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Feb. 13, 1923, in Chauncey, she was the daughter of the late the Rev. Gus and Clara Hinton Graham. She was a graduate of Chauncey-Dover High School, a member of the Salvation Army for 15 years, a volunteer for APAC and a retired Senior Volunteer. She was an Army veteran who served as a WAC during World War II, and a member of The Plains VFW Post 7174 and its auxiliary.
She is survived by 11 children, sons Patrick (Marilyn) Hooper of Austin, Texas, Michael (Mary) Hooper of Glouster, Cliford (Trish) Hooper of Greensboro, N.C., Thomas (Carolyn) Hooper of Glouster, Timothy Hooper of The Plains, and daughters Donna (Terry) Mathews of Middleport, Debbie (Larry) Cochran of The Plains, Christie (Terry) Bosworth of Shade, Jeannie (L.G.) Hollingsworth of Greensboro, Belle (Keith) Person of New Haven, W.Va., and Candy Graham of Hawaii; 28 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Freda Garrison of Fairfax, Va., and Mildred Lovelace of Reynoldsburg; a brother, Robert (Marylyn) Graham of Groveport; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mae Mace and Hester Radcliff of The Plains.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Donald C. Hooper; a grandson, Christopher Allen Halley; sisters Bertha Blackford, Dorothy Riggs, Jennie Gerard, Isabelle Shirley, Ethel Brewer, Martha Smith and Charlotte Graham; and brothers Dana and Otto Graham.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by Lt. Ross Kelsey. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, with military rites conducted by the Combined Honor Guard.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where The Plains VFW auxiliary will hold memorial services at 7.
Bernice Neely Lovsey

ALBANY -- Bernice Neely Lovsey, 84, of Albany, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Willows Nursing Care Center, Parkersburg
Born March 30, 1918, in Amma, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Gertrude Reed Ashley. She was a homemaker and former owner of Lovsey Hardware of Albany.
She is survived by a son, Larry G. (Anita) Neely of Belpre; a daughter, Patricia (Thomas) Lieving of Albany; a stepson, David Lovsey of Macon, Ga.; stepdaughters Pat Covert of Nelsonville, Shannon Gregory of Fairborn and Beverly French of Hillsboro; grandchildren Robin Reese, Meredith Lieving and Misti (Stace) Robinson of Albany; great-grandchildren Tyler Robinson, Ashlea Kirk and Kristen Clem; sisters Karolyn Surface of Vienna, W.Va., and Clarice Snodgrass of Parkersburg; a brother, Ora "Jack" Ashley of Gandeeville, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands Hestel Neely and John Lovsey; a grandson, Kenneth Lieving; a stepdaughter, Melanie Lovsey Eggleston; five brothers, Max, Rex, George Jr., Frank and Oral "Dick" Ashley; three sisters, Frances Summers, Doris Moore and Clara McQuain; and an infant sister.
Services will be held Friday, 2 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with the Rev. Harold Demus officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

James Lee Herron

NEW MARSHFIELD -- James Lee Herron, 65, of Spring Hill, Fla., a former resident of the New Marshfield area, died early Friday morning, Nov. 22, 2002, at Hernando Pasco Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Fla.
Born Jan. 16, 1937, in Athens, he was the son of the late Merritt W. and Hazel V. Hartley Herron. He was a graduate of New Marshfield High School. He had been employed by Lockheed Martin Corp. in Tampa, Fla., and was a resident of Florida for 30 years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, a member of Florida Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the family motor coach association.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Beaty Herron; a daughter, Alesa Lynn Herron of Spring Hill; sons Michael Kevin Herron of Atlanta, Ga., and Mark Edward Herron of Ecuador, South America; two grandchildren; and a brother, Randy Allan Herron of Troy.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Joyce; and a brother, David Neil.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Athens VFW Post 3477 and K.T. Crossen Post 21.

Margaret "Peg" L. Carmichael

ATHENS -- Margaret "Peg" L. Carmichael, 96, of Slidell, La., died early Friday morning, Nov. 22, 2002, at Guest House of Slidell.
Born Sept. 16, 1907, in Broadwell, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Bessie Mae Totman Gorham. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Lydia Lash Evans Club and Athens Garden Club.
Mrs. Carmichael first came to Athens to receive her education. She and her late husband moved to various Air Force bases, returning to Athens after retirement. She moved to Louisiana in 1997.
She is survived by a daughter, Joy (John) Mondello of Slidell; sons Richard L. Carmichael of Oson, Korea, and Gary Carmichael of Columbus; and eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. D.P. Carmichael (USAF Ret.), in 1980.
Services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel, with burial in Athens Memory Gardens.

NELSONVILLE -- Ralph P. Keiffer, 73, of Nelsonville, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his residence.
Born Aug. 4, 1929, in Nelsonville, he was the son of the late Pearl and Pearly Misner Keiffer. He was married to Gertrude Matheny Keiffer of Nelsonville. He was a retired custodian for Nelsonville-York High School and was baptized many years ago at Nelsonville First Christian Church.
In addition to his wife, Gertrude, he is survived by two sons, Steve Keiffer of South Carolina and Mark (Kim Young) Keiffer of Athens; three daughters, Paula (Terry) Keiffer Hollifield of Nelsonville, Angela Alcaparras of Radcliff, Ky., and Jeri Keiffer of South Carolina; 16 grandchildren, Steven and Josh Keiffer, Eddie Edmonds, Chelsey, Kyle, Tyler, Jade and Shaey Keiffer, Cody and Ila Woolever, Nora and Ambrosio Alcaparras, Christopher and Chasity Stutler, and Bryan and Justin Hollifield; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Faye (Robert) Blair of Logan and Mae Sayre of Nelsonville; and special friends Lori Wirick and Bob Davis.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Forrest, Marie and Gay; five brothers, Foster, Robert, Wayne, Roy and Ray; and a grandson, Brian Keiffer.
Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Michael Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Nelsonville.

Gaynelle Graham

THE PLAINS -- Gaynelle Graham, 87, of The Plains, died early Thursday morning, Nov. 21, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Feb. 22, 1919, in Frost, Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Lillie Radenbach Welch. A 1933 graduate of Rome-Canaan High School, she had retired as a driver examiner for the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Early in life, she was a practical nurse employed at Athens State Hospital where she attended nursing school and was a private nurse for Dr. Biddle. She was former manager of Buckeye Boys Ranch and a member of The Plains United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Evelyn Golden of Cincinnati; a stepson, Lloyd (Mary) Graham of The Plains; stepgrandchildren Terry (Bernice) Graham of Milan, Stephan (Diane) Graham of Springboro, Greg Golden and Gary Golden of Lancaster; five stepgreat-grandchildren and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a sister, Eleanor (John) Sillaman of Midway; and a brother, Norman (Ruth) Welch of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Graham; a sister, Marjorie Sandusky; and brothers Maurice and Neil Welch.
Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at The Plains United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.

Charles Leroy Williams

ATHENS -- Charles Leroy Williams, 85, of Athens, died at the home of his son late Thursday evening, Nov. 21, 2002.
Born Feb. 5, 1917, in Glouster, he was son of the late Clyde and Olive Mason Williams. A 1935 graduate of Athens High School, he was a retired brick mason and member of Bricklayers & Masons Union Local 54. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Air Force and flew on 35 bombing missions.
He is survived by a son, Ronald (Judy) Williams of Athens; grandsons Ronald (Dawn) Williams and Larry J. Williams of Athens; and sisters Betty Stauffer of The Plains and Lois Bean of Daytona Beach, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Annabelle Brandeberry Williams, in 1994; sisters Benarda Phillips and Dorothy Pence; brothers Bernard, Tom and Dean Williams; and brothers-in-law Don Stauffer, John Pence and Orland Bean.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by Pastor John Elswick. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, where military rites will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3477 and K.T. Crossen American Legion Post 21.
