HOLLISTER -- Connie S. Pettit Warren, 31, of Hollister, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at her residence.
Born Feb. 5, 1971, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of Nancy J. Stobart Pettit of Glouster and the late Derek T. Pettit.
She is survived by sons Kyle E. and Jeremy Warren, Joshua and Joseph Swaim; and daughters Crystal L. Pettit, Kayla M. and Cara W. Warren.
Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Brown Funeral Home in Murray City. Burial will be in Hollister Cemetery.

James Walter McLaren Jr.
Died: Sunday, November 10, 2002
ATHENS -- James Walter "Mac" McLaren Jr. died of colon cancer on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at his home in Athens.
Born Jan. 7, 1916, at Grant Hospital, Columbus, he was raised in Hockingport. He was the only child of the late James W. and Mary Pennybacker McLaren. He graduated from Troy High School in Coolville in 1934, where he had been a member of the track team, competing in pole vaulting and the long jump. He graduated from Ohio University in 1938 with a degree in business. He was an active member of Athens First Christian Church, having served on several boards over the years.
In the 1940s, he owned The University Cleaners, a dry-cleaning business. He later was co-owner of Ohio Cleaners. In the early 1950s, he opened a men's clothing business, Mac's Thrifty Store. The store was first located on Court Street and moved to West State Street in 1953. In 1989, a second store location was opened on East State Street. Mac worked in the store until he retired in 1992, at which time the West State Street store was closed. His children continue to operate the store on East State Street.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Esther Keirns McLaren; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Bonnie McLaren; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jeff Swaim; and four grandchildren, Amy and Brittany McLaren, and Paul and Sara Swaim. He also is survived by a sister-in-law, Eleanor Kasler; a brother-in-law, Otho "Doc" Coon; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Marie Keirns; a brother-in-law, Warren Kasler; and a sister-in-law, Alice Coon.
Services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Jagers Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. David Felty presiding. Burial will take place at the cemetery in Hockingport.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Athens First Christian Church or Hockingport United Methodist Church.

James Barber

Age: 66
REEDSVILLE -- James Barber, 66, of Reedsville, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at his residence.
Born Aug. 18, 1935, in Reedsville, he was the son of the late Ray and Bernice Reed Barber. He is survived by four sons, James Jr., William, Ronnie and Terry; and a daughter, Dianna Barber.
Service will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Eden Cemetery, Reedsville.
Arrangements are by White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville.
Clarence Edward Allison
Died: Sunday, November 10, 2002
Age: 83
LOGAN -- Clarence Edward Allison, 83, of Logan, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at his residence.
Born Sept. 30, 1919, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Mary Allison Rogers.
He is survived by sons Dean Edward and Patrick Lee Allison, and a daughter, Martha Ann Allison.
Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, with military services conducted by the Combined Veterans of Hocking County.

Caster D. Giffin
Died: Sunday, November 10, 2002
Age: 80
ALBANY -- Caster D. Giffin, 80, of Albany, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at his residence.
Born Aug. 30, 1922, in Albany, he was the son of the late Worley and Mabel Bobo Giffin. He was retired from Goodyear in Akron.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McGrath Giffin, and by a nephew, three nieces and several cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by the grandparents who raised him, Caster and Della Bobo, and by a brother.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family, with the Rev. Leonard McVey officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany.
There will be no calling hours observed.
Hester Ellen Davis

WELLSTON -- Hester Ellen Davis, 85, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Edgewood Manor Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 7, 1917, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James and Ida Starkey Davis.
Services will be Wednesday, at 3 p.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston, with burial in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Theda A. Wilkinson

LOGAN -- Theda A. Wilkinson, 82, of Logan, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
Born in Haydenville on Dec. 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Sylvia Skivers Rieder. She was a member of Carbon Hill Christian Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Ronnie Bond of Logan; grandchildren Laura Bond, Rhonda (and Raymond) Harvey, Meredith (and Scott) Nice and Kent (and Christina) Bond, all of Logan; great-grandchildren Morgan and Chelsea Harvey of Logan; a brother, Paul "Roy" (and Barbara) Rieder of Daytona Beach, Fla.; sisters Bonna Rutherford of Nelsonville, Arlene (and Terry) Smith of Daytona Beach and Mary Lou Smith of Logan; and a sister-in-law, Grace Rieder of Ormond Beach, Fla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Wilkinson, who passed away in 1998; and by a brother, Victor Rieder.
Funeral services are Tuesday at noon at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery.

COLUMBUS -- Dorothy G. Sprague, 76, of Columbus, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Wesley Glen Health Care Center, Columbus, after an extended illness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Blanche Hughes; brothers George and Charles Hughes; and a sister, Viginia Hughes.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dale Sprague; a son, Bruce Sprague of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Joyce (David) Rawson of Grove City; sisters Janey and Mable Hughes; grandchildren Kenneth and Benjamin Rawson; and a brother-in-law, Donald Gary Sprague.
Services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Oakland Park United Methodist Church, 994 Oakland Park, Columbus, with the Rev. Scott Jenkins officiating. Private family interment will be held at a later time.

GLOUSTER -- A. Jane Alfman Richards, 48, of Glouster, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2002, at Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
Born April 28, 1954, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of Bonnie McConaha Alfman and the late Gene Alfman.
She is survived by a son, James (Angel) Richards Jr. of Glouster; three daughters, Wendi (John) Wion of New Lexington, Julie (Rob) Hook of Glouster and Angel Kennard of Glouster; grandchildren Daniele, Garett, John Jr., Michael, Mathew, Amber, Chad, Jeffery, Isaac, Kyler, Jason and Katrina; three brothers, Gary (Rita) Alfman of Glouster, Roger (Chris) Alfman of Glouster and Tommy Alfman of Glouster; a special friend, Paul Lenigar; and numerous family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ernest and Mary McConaha, and her first husband, John Fritter.
Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster. Interment will be in Miller Town Cemetery, Corning.

Arnold Clyde Smith

COOLVILLE -- Arnold Clyde Smith, 68, of Coolville, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born July 9, 1934, in Coolville, he was the son of the late Clyde and Sylvia Cubbison Smith. He was a retired body shop foreman for Warner Pontiac and a retired teacher for Wood County Vocational School in Parkersburg. He also was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a former Troy Twp. trustee.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Ann Welch Smith; a son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Brenda Smith of Coolville; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Steve Follrod of Athens; three grandsons, Troy Smith, and Brandon and Brian Follrod; a granddaughter, Katie Follrod; a brother, Virgil Smith of Opka, Fla.; and two sisters, Shirley Welch of Coolville and Ruth Pessagno of Maryland.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Glen Cubbison.
Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with Pastor Keith Kapple officiating. Burial will be in Ireland Cemetery, Coolville.

Peter James Brady

NELSONVILLE -- ĘPeter James "Jim" Brady, 61, of Nelsonville, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
He was born May 12, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Donald Brady of Sugar Grove and the late Marcel Conley Brady. He was the widow of the late Judith Adams Brady.
He was retired from Columbus Southern Power and he was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran. He was a member of Nelsonville Elks Lodge 543, Nelsonville VFW Post 3467, Logan Moose Lodge 873 and Nelsonville Wesleyan Church.
In addition to his father, he is survived by three daughters, Caren (Jerry) Young, Angela (Jeff) Buelsing and Jamie (Bart) Richardson, all of Cincinnati; a stepson, Bill McCombs of Lancaster; six grandchildren, Joseph Young, Matthew and Abigail Buelsing, Jonah Richardson, Zachary McCombs and Heather McCombs; four brothers, Alan Whitmore of Buchtel, Ben Whitmore of Lincoln Park, Mich., John (Cheryl) Whitmore of New Boston, Mich., Charles (Alice) Whitmore of Wyandotte, Mich.; four sisters, Sheila Hartley of Nelsonville, Ruth (Alvin) Yager of Oak Park, Mich., and Lenna (Kevin) Rowe and Carla (Frank) Kupozynski, both of Lincoln Park.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville, where a military graveside service will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.
