ATHENS -- Dorothy Mae Hill, 62, of Toledo, formerly of Athens County, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in Toledo.
Born June 11, 1940, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Dorothy Singer Holbert. She was a graduate of Carthage-Troy High School.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce and Phyllis Holbert and Shajuna Hill, all of Toledo; two grandchildren, Sabrina and Shantal Barcus of Toledo; two sisters, Naomi Baker of Guysville and Phyllis Nichols of Chesterhill; three brothers, James (Shirley) Holbert, David (Jean) Holbert and Richard (Donna) Holbert, all of Los Angeles, Calif.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loren Hill, on April 9, 2001; four sisters, Ada Holbert, Anna Owens, Gloria Holbert and Freda Holbert; and two brothers, Reginald Clark and Carl Holbert.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens, with John Butcher officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Catherine L. Raub Welsh
Died: Monday, October 28, 2002
Age: 87
POMEROY -- Catherine L. Raub Welsh, 87, a resident of Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center in Pomeroy, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis.
Born Oct. 14, 1915, in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late Joseph J. and Gertrude M. Kieling Raub.
She is survived by her children, Pamela Dye and Michael Welsh.
Services will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Pomeroy, on a day and time to be announced. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church.
John William Melville
Died: Monday, October 28, 2002
Age: 62
FROST -- John William Melville, 62, of Frost, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home, after a long illness.
Born Aug. 5, 1940, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late John Cairney and Marjorie Bernice Melville. He formerly owned and operated Melville's Towing in Detroit, was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the NRA.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Dorothy Boyer Melville; seven children, Edward (Moriha) Buck of Stewart, John A. (Deborah) Melville of Millfield, James (Carolyn) Melville of Ecourse, Mich., Joseph (Ann) Melville of Livonia, Mich., Jerri Floyd of Redford, Mich., Marjorie (Donald) Dorton of Detroit and Paul (Denise) Melville of Redford; and 15 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Melville; a grandson, Eric Melville; and a son-in-law, Donald Floyd.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens, with Roger McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Wyers Cemetery.

Grover Cleveland Smith

Age: 87
NELSONVILLE -- Grover Cleveland Smith, 87, formerly of Nelsonville and McArthur, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Heartland of Jackson Nursing Home in Jackson.
Born Sept. 18, 1915, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Ray and Georgia Tippie Smith.
A graveside service will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville with Pastor Mike Thompson officiating.
Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville.
Anna K. Harold
Died: Monday, October 28, 2002
Age: 89
ATHENS -- Anna K. Herold, 89, of Ohio Avenue, Athens, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 28, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born April 17, 1913, in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Ignaz and Anna Jurigchek Kuldanek. She was a former longtime resident of Hillside, N.J.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Green of Athens; a son, George (Stephanie) Herold of Cary, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jon (Jen) Green of Aurora, Colo., Liz Green of Athens, and Maureen and Caitlyn Herold of Cary.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George L. Herold, in 1999.
There will be no calling hours or services.
Arrangements will be announced by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens.
Betty L. Smart

Age: 80
LOGAN -- Betty L. Smart, 80, of Logan, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, in Logan.
Born July 12, 1922, in Fairfield County, she was the daughter of the late John and Virginia Kitchen Donley.
She is survived by sons Marvin, Paul, John and Dwight Smart.
Services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at Oakgrove Cemetery, Logan. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home in Logan.
Martha Standing Foster
Died: Monday, October 28, 2002
Age: 95
ATHENS -- Martha Standing Foster, 95, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in Athens.
Of Quaker descent, Martha was born in Dallas County, Iowa, in 1907. She graduated from Berea College, Kentucky. Her husband, Paul Cameron Foster, who passed away in 1952, was chief resident of surgery at Holzer Hospital.
She also was preceded in death by her parents, Henry "Fox" Standing and Eunice Peacock Standing; three sisters, Edith, Bertha and Ellen; and five brothers, Jesse, Gilbert "Ernest," John, Charles and Theodore.
Martha is survived by children and in-laws Cameron and Sara Foster of Athens, Theodore and Katharin Foster of Athens, and Stephany Ellen Foster of Jackson; grandchildren and in-laws Scott and Catherine Franssen, and great-grandchildren Sara and Matthew, of California; and grandsons William of California and Robert of Oregon. She also is survived by a niece, Helen Spriegel and husband Lawrence of Gallipolis, and their family; other nieces and nephews; as well as by friends in Gallipolis and Athens, and the caring staff at Hickory Creek.
After the unexpected death of her husband, Paul, Martha completed the raising of her children and pursued an interest in writing, which led to the publication of two children's books, "Ginger Box" in 1959 and "A Red Carpet for Lafayette" in 1962 (reprinted by the Gallia County Historical Society) and many short stories, essays and poems. Martha also was curator of the Our House Museum, retiring a number of years ago to live near her children in Athens.
This beautiful, talented lady -- considered the "lively one" by her elder relatives -- has, during her long life, nourished so many people through her interest in them as individuals, her natural optimism, her wisdom, love of beauty and through her gracious and sharing spirit of love.
Arrangements are being handled by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens. There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service in Gallipolis will be announced at a later date.

Wayne W. Howard Sr.
Died: Sunday, October 27, 2002
Age: 78
COLUMBUS -- Wayne W. Howard Sr., 78, of Columbus, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was a member of Southwest Freewill Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran. He served in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and American Legion. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Howard; brothers Harold and Vernon; and sisters Evelyn, Beatrice, Blanche, Audrey and Katherine.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marianne; sons Richard (Sheila) Howard of Grove City, and Wayne (Jeri) Howard of Pickerington; grandchildren Heather (Cory) Sheets, Dawn (Paul) Moore, Heidi Howard, Aubrey (Wes) Jordan and Wayne Howard III; great-grandchildren Gary, Marissa, Jacob, Kassie and Keith; special niece and nephew Janet Boyd and Howard Wheatley; and many other nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Thursday, 10 a.m., at Southwest Freewill Baptist Church, 1542 Greenleaf Road, Columbus, with the Rev. John Meade officiating. Interment will be in Omega Cemetery, Waverly.

Betty J. Yates

Age: 73
LOGAN -- Betty J. Yates, 73, of Logan, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, in Logan.
Born July 21, 1929, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Merle Stump Sr. and Mable Bailey Stump.
She is survived by daughters Jean Spang, Mendy Yates and Misty Knapp.
Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday beginning at noon, with the family in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. An Eagles auxiliary service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
William L. Butcher

RACINE -- William L. Butcher, 58, of Racine, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.
Born May 22, 1944, in Cincinnati, he was the son of William and Mary Kathryn Newman Butcher of Middleport. He also is survived by sons Joey Oyler and Terry Butcher, and daughters Dena Adams, Chelsea Young, and Amber and Ashley Butcher.
Services will be Wednesday, 7 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until time of services.

Born April 9, 1937, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Willmut and Ruth A. Patton Vermillion.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Poling Vermillion; a son, Doug Vermillion; and a daughter, Patty Nichols.

Arthur Lee McQuaid

HAYDENVILLE -- Arthur Lee McQuaid, 82, of Haydenville, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Ohio State University Hospital East, Columbus, after an extended illness.
Born Feb. 1, 1920, in Haydenville, he was the son of the late Eliphlet C. and Martha Barstow McQuaid. Mr. McQuaid was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Logan First Baptist Church, had formerly worked for Natco Corp. in Haydenville and retired from Selkirk Metalbestos Corp. in Logan.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Esther Barron McQuaid; a son, Walter Lee McQuaid of Lancaster; three grandchildren, Brittany McQuaid of Circleville, Jared McQuaid of Columbus and Michael McQuaid of Lancaster; and three great-grandchildren, Isaiah Winegardner of Circleville, Damron McQuaid and Colton McQuaid of Logan.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, with Kenny Kidd officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Nelsonville.
