Ruth Antle Sikora
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 79
TRIMBLE -- Ruth Antle Sikora, 79, of Trimble, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at her residence.
Born April 14, 1923, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Blanche McLead Antle. She was retired from Goodyear of Logan, attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Glouster, was a life member of the DAV and VFW auxiliaries and a member of the American Legion auxiliary in Murray City.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard J. Sikora; sons Richard Dunkle of Richwood, Garry (Sharon) Dunkle of Columbus, Craig (Sandy) Dunkle of Glouster and David Dunkle of Trimble; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a special friend, Marilyn McCalla of Richwood; sisters Pauline Pettit of Dayton and Dorothy Patterson of Lebanon; and a sister-in-law, Brittie Antle of Georgia.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harlen Antle; and a sister, Mona Myers.
Services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Glouster, with Fr. John Mucha officiating. Burial will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Trimble.
Friends may call at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Christian Wake service will be held at 2:30.

James C. Hill
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 69
ATHENS -- James C. "Ping" Hill, 69, passed away Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, after several years of failing health.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Hill, who died Nov. 5, 1980, and Viola "Daisy" Hill.
Born in Nelsonville, he lived his life within Athens County, most recently in Athens. He worked for several years at the Athena Theater, and fixed and traded automobiles. During the early 1980s he owned and managed Crows Nest Pawn Shop on North Lancaster Street in Athens. He often expressed strong and controversial political and social opinions in his letters to the editor. His hobbies and interests included reading, studying about World War II, guns, automobiles, and photography.
Mr. Hill left no children or immediate family.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his long-time friend and companion, Mary Charonis, who died Dec. 28, 1999; and a half brother, Arthur "Pearl" Hill, who died in 1972.
Jack F. Spell
Died: Saturday, October 26, 2002
Age: 68
NELSONVILLE -- Jack F. Spell, 68, of Nelsonville, died Saturday morning, Oct. 26, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born March 20, 1934, in Collins, Miss., he was the son of the late Edwin M. and Chella Martha Rogers Spell. He was manager of the costume shop at Ohio University.
Jack Spell had been associated with the OU School of Theater and Ohio Valley Summer Theater since his undergraduate student days in the late 1950s. Upon graduation, his first professional theater job was as assistant designer at Front Street Theater in Memphis, after which he did stage and commercial work in New York City and performed the role of "the old man" with the National Touring Company of "The Fantastiks." He returned to the School of Theater and completed an MFA in 1972-74. He joined the staff/faculty of the school as costumer in the early 1980s.
Jack Spell served as a board member for the restoration of Stuart's Opera House in Nelsonville, where he created a one-man show, "Ladies and Gentlemen: Mark Twain." He toured nationally with that show and donned his Mark Twain persona for OVST in "Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in 1998 and in the OVST Golden Anniversary review in 2001.
Jack's acting credits at the OU School of Theater and OVST include: Argramonte, "Reclining Figure"; Carl the bus driver, "Bus Stop"; jury member, "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial," 1957; Capt. Lucius Jenks, "Command Decision"; Dr. Balsar, "The Great Sebastians"; Elyot Chase, "Private Lives," 1958; Robin Flood the husband, "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs;" Mr. Loomis the floorwalker, "Auntie Mame"; "da dook" in "The Gazebo"; Maxwell Archer, "Once More With Feeling," 1961; Dr. Einstein, "Arsenic and Old Lace," 1987; Mark Twain, "Big River," 1998; Grandpa Vanderhof, "You Can't Take It With You," 1999; and Mark Twain in the OVST Golden Anniversary Review.
Prior to 1984, Jack spent 16 summers as costume designer and actor at the OU School of Theater Monomoy Theatre program at Chatham, Mass. He was head of the costume shop for all OVST productions, 1984 through the present. His other offstage responsibilities included: prompter "Gigi," 1957; lighting, "A Roomful of Roses," properties, "Command Decision," 1958; sound, "The Loud Red Patrick"; and assistant director, "Auntie Mame," 1961.
He is survived by a brother, Billie Spell of Los Angeles, Calif.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, conducted by Pastor Denver Dodrill.

Gilbert Lee Goines

LOGAN -- Gilbert Lee Goines, 36, of Logan, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at his residence.
Born Nov. 17, 1965, in Muskogee, Okla., he was the son of the late Floyd Eugene and Donna Lee Fillman Goines.
He is survived by his wife, Cyndie B. Sheets Goines; and a son, Chase Lee Goines.
Services will be held Wednesday, 2:30 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery, Logan.

Ray Riggs

Age: 87
COOLVILLE -- Ray Riggs, 87, of Coolville, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Camden-Clark Hospital, Parkersburg.
Born May 16, 1915, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Georgia Riggs.
He is survived by his wife, Gathie Dale Riggs of Coolville; sons and daughters-in-law, Marion and Ellen Riggs, Kenneth Eugene and Judy Riggs, and David Riggs and friend Wanda Mankin; a daughter, Rita, and son-in-law, John Mitchell; a sister, Mary Shields of Upper Sandusky; four stepchildren, Caralynn Williams, Maralynn Drumond, Asienth Hester and Larry Tracy; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three wives, Mary Grace Smith, Phyllis Carbaugh and Mary Tracy; two brothers, James and Charles; and four sisters, Ada, Opal, Lois and Virginia.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II, formerly owned and operated Ray Riggs Lincoln Mercury in Athens and was a member of Drew Webster Post American Legion of Pomeroy, Shade River Masonic Lodge 453 of Chester, Athens County Shrine Club, Aladdin Temple of Columbus, Scottish Rite.
Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with the Rev. Donald Seevers and Helen Kline officiating. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Long Bottom.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where Masonic services will be held at 7 p.m.

Born Oct. 14, 1977, in Logan, he was the son of Joanna Pennington Taylor of New Straitsville and the late Kenneth E. Taylor.
Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral, Logan, with burial in New Fairview Memorial Gardens.

Virginia Kirk Hindy

MIDDLEPORT - Virginia Kirk Hindy, 83, of Middleport, died Monday, July 14, 2003, in Middleport.
Born July 23, 1920, in Delbarton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Allen and Ida Daniels Kirk.
She is survived by a son, David Hindy.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cassam Hindy.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Kirkland Cemetery, Point Pleasant, W.Va. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport.
Earl Denny Jr.

MIDDLEPORT - Earl Denny Jr., 77, of Middleport, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at Overbrook Center in Middleport.
Born Aug. 23, 1925, in Pomeroy, he was the son of the late Earl Sr. and Cora Smith Denny.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Demoskey Denny; and a son, Ronnie Denny.
Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Frances Virginia Pierre Schaar
Died: Monday, July 14, 2003
Age: 89
ATHENS - Frances Virginia Pierre Schaar, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 14, 2003, in Maitland, Fla., after a long illness. She was a devoted wife,mother, grandmother and school teacher.
Born Aug. 29, 1913, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Adda Bess Pierre. Mrs. Schaar worked her way through college as a social worker, helping families during the Depression. She graduated from Ohio University in 1936, and earned a masters in education degree from the University of Virginia in 1968. Mrs. Schaar served in the OU College of Education Society of Alumni and Friends, was a member of the Metropolitan Women’s Club in Madison, Wis., and enjoyed membership at Asbury United Methodist Church in Maitland. She contributed to each community she called home.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Roland J. Schaar.
She is survived by her four children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
There will be a visitation for family and friends on Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens. A graveside service will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville, beginning at 1 p.m.
Barbara Helen Nickell

GLOUSTER - Barbara Helen Nickell, 61, of Columbus, died Monday, July 14, 2003, at her residence.
Born April 15, 1942, in Glouster, she was the daughter of the late Paul R. and Mary Alice Skinner Kelly. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Nickell; daughters, Mary Kaye DeMauro of Columbus and Helen Jane Nickell of Tukwilla, Wash.; grandchildren, Regina Leigh and Robert Lewis DeMauro; a great-granddaughter, Raven; a sister, Kaye Greenlee of Glouster; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Polly Nickell of McArthur.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a half brother, Robert Skinner.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur, with the Rev. Danny Minton officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.

Born Aug. 11, 1913, in Chester, he was the son of the late William and Grace Pullins Bailey.
He is survived by his wife, Alpha Douglas Bailey; and a stepson, Roger Young.

John Shanon Richards

GLOUSTER - John Shanon Richards, 26, of Glouster, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
Born July 9, 1977, in Athens County, he was the son of David Joe Richards of Glouster and the late Marlene Williams Richards. He was a 1996 graduate of Trimble High School and was employed by Complete Rail Sets in Glouster.
Besides his father, he is survived by a son, Johnathan Shanon Richards; a friend, Jodie Pason of Nelsonville; two sisters, Brenda (Bob) Arnold and Tonya (Josh) Braglin; and a brother, David “Bub” (Heather) Richards, all of Glouster; nieces, Makenzie and Amanda Arnold, Chelsea Braglin and Jasmine Richards; nephews, Dylan Richards, Bobby Jr. and Brandon Arnold; maternal grandparents, John and Betty Williams; and paternal grandmother, Betty Richards, all of Glouster; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Joe Richards; an aunt, Susan Ann DeGarmore; and an uncle, Gary Frances Richards Sr.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville, with Jason Fisher officiating. Interment will be in Glouster Cemetery.
