NELSONVILLE - Alan R. Swaim, 37, of Nelsonville, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born Sept. 29, 1965, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Raymond E. and Beverly Breeze Swaim.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; two sons, Alan J. Swaim of the home and Andrew Swaim of Londonderry; two daughters, Shanna R. Swaim of the home and Ashley Swaim of Dundas; a sister, Serena (Mike) McCollum of Nelsonville; two brothers, Robert E. (Pam) Swaim of Columbus and Steven W. (Connie) Swaim of Dundas; a grandson, Gage Morris of Dundas; his father-in-law, Paul Salveto of Columbus; and his mother-in-law, Linda McKinnis of Logan.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Mike Thomas officiating. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery, Rockbridge.
Calling hours are Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Barbara Louise Tullis Brill
Died: Friday, July 18, 2003
Age: 77
AMESVILLE - Barbara Louise Tullis Brill, 77, of Amesville, died Friday, July 18, 2003, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 8, 1925, in Bartlett, she was the daughter of the late Adolphus and Venia Kester Tullis.
She is survived by a son, Michael Brill; and a daughter, Susan Hall.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl J. Brill.
Services will be private and there will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by Stone-Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill.
Bearl A. Ronk
Died: Thursday, July 17, 2003
Age: 81
JACKSONVILLE - Bearl A. Ronk, 81, of Jacksonville, passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Cincinnati.
Born Oct. 24, 1922, in Huntington, W.Va., he was the son of the late Leander and Ulrica Hedrick Ronk.
He is survived by his wife, Opal King Cullums Ronk.
Services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, W.Va. Burial will be in Ronk Cemetery, Cabell County, W.Va.
Friends may call at Cardaras Funeral Home in Glouster on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m., and at Heck Funeral Home on Tuesday from noon to 2.
Armond F. Rist
Died: Thursday, July 17, 2003
Age: 79
ATHENS - Armond F. “Army” Rist, 79, of Athens, died early Thursday morning, July 17, 2003, at his home, after a long illness.
Born Dec. 13, 1923, in East Liverpool, Ohio, he was the son of the late Henry D. and Anna L. Edwards Rist.
Army retired as a physics technician for the Physics Department in Ohio University’s Clippinger Hall, with 37 years of service. He was a graduate of East Liverpool High School and attended OU. He also had worked as a crane operator for Republic Steel, as a cab driver, for Fiskus TV and Radio Shop, assisted local radio stations with transmitter repairs and helped erect the towers on Rader Hill at OU.
He was an amateur radio operator, with call letters W8CHS. He enjoyed teaching Morse Code to children and helped many area operators get their license. A member of ARRL and the Athens Ham Radio Club, he also was active in the Civil Defense.
Mr. Rist was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the China Burma India Theatre. He assisted in construction of the Burma Road and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He was a member of K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion.
Army was a blood donor for the Red Cross and, while able, was a Mall Walker with more than 1,000 miles walked.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Scott Rist; his daughters, Peggy, Susan and Beverly Jo; and his grandson, Ben.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Mae; and two infant brothers.
Services will be held Saturday, 3 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, with Pastor Bill O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Bates Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 3477 Honor Guards.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday one hour prior to the service.
John J. Saving
Died: Thursday, July 17, 2003
Age: 70
LOGAN - John J. Saving, 70, of Logan, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, following an extended illness.
Born Nov. 3, 1932, in Columbus, he was the son of the late J. Walter and Margaret McGuire Saving. He was married for 50 years to Marjorie Harwood Saving, who survives.
He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and received the Barton Holl Citizenship award in 1982. He was a member of the board of directors of Citizens Bank for 30 years and a member of the Logan-Holl Foundation board of trustees.
He was a former member and president of Hocking County Children’s Services, a former member of the board of directors for the Logan-Hocking Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Community Improvement Corp. and Knights of Columbus, a former member and president of Logan Trade Club (forerunner of Logan Area Chamber of Commerce), former member of Logan Kiwanis Club, a member of Logan Moose Lodge, a former member of Nelsonville Elks Lodge, and a former member and president of Logan Jaycees.
In addition, he served as chairman of Logan’s famed Christmas lights project for the past several years.
He also was the founding father and a lifetime member of the annual Shamrock Open event.
A 1950 graduate of Logan High School, he owned and operated Saving Hardware Inc. with his brother, Wally Saving, for nearly 50 years before his retirement in 1996.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, son-in-law and uncle to all members of his family.
Also surviving are four sons John William “Bill” (Janey) Saving, David P. (Cindy) Saving, Jeffrey (Amy) Saving and Stephen P. (Barbara) Saving, all of Logan; a brother, Wally (Nancy) Saving; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill (Shirley) Harwood Jr.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Dorothy Harwood Rardain, all of Logan; a sister-in-law, Janet Saving of New Jersey; his in-laws, Bill and Eva Lee Harwood of Logan; 11 grandchildren, David Shrode, Tobin Primmer, Melinda Norfleet, Trevor Saving, John Saving, Jonah Saving, Heather Mace, Beth Primmer, Mallory Saving, Misty Saving and Nathan Saving; eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Saving; a sister-in-law, Pansy Saving; and a nephew, Robbie Saving.
Funeral Mass will be held Monday, 10 a.m., at St. John Catholic Church, with Msgrs. William A. Dunn and James A. Geiger officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan on Sunday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., where a Christian vigil service will be conducted 8.

WELLSTON - Mary Carolyn Hedges, 65, of Wellston, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, at her residence.
Born March 10, 1938, in Circleville, she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Ida Walters Hedges.
She is survived by her companion, Blaine Hubbard.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home in McArthur. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memory Gardens.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Lexie E. Nuckols

WELLSTON - Lexie E. Nuckols, 89, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Huston Nursing Home in Hamden.
Born Sept. 1, 1913, in Salyersville, Ky., she was a homemaker and had been a resident of Jackson for 25 years before moving to Wellston in 1996.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Symar Nuckols; two brothers, Henry and Melvin Conly; and two sisters, Alka J. Holbrook and Majorie B. Wheeler.
She is survived by a sister, Marie Warren of New Lebanon; 13 nieces and nephews; and special people, Jack and Carolyn Nigh of Wellston.
Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home in Wellston, with the Rev. Allie Skaggs officiating. Burial will be in Bellfonte Memorial Gardens, Russell, Ky.
Gladys Pauline Ballentine

BUCHTEL - Gladys Pauline “Bunny” Ballentine, 77, of 848 E. Court St., Urbana, died Wednesday, July 16, 2003, at Mercy McAuley Center, Urbana.
Born April 29, 1926, in Buchtel, she was the daughter of the late William Benett “Dutch” and Orelia A. Comer Bruce.
She is survived by children Michael V. Ballentine, Bruce C. Ballentine and Sherri L. Allen.
A private visitation and graveside service will be held Saturday at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Richard Eugene Maffin
