CARBON HILL - Jackie Dean McCulloch Jr., 41, of Carbon Hill, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003.
Born Oct. 7, 1961, in Nelsonville, he was the son of Jackie D. Sr. and Louise Phillips McCulloch of Carbon Hill. Jackie was employed by Dale Skivers Truck and Auto of Carbon Hill.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two daughters, Shannon and Courtney McCulloch; and a son, Austin McCulloch, all of Newark; five brothers and their spouses, Jerry and Rose McCulloch of Carbon Hill, Lonny and Beth McCulloch and Kevin and Amy McCulloch of Nelsonville, Paul and Sonja Glass and Chris Glass of Tampa, Fla; seven sisters and their spouses, Vickie and Gary Champ of Logan, Sue and Sam Mays of Carbon Hill, Joyce Glass, Sharon and John Young of Nelsonville, Connie and Dave Young of Jackson, Linda and Richard Wise of Newark, Judy and Bill Murphy of Glouster; his grandmother, Lucille McCulloch of Doanville; and his girlfriend, Nancy Butcher of Carbon Hill.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Glass; and a brother, Bob Glass.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Burial will be in The Plains Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
John Edward Hoover

Age: 83
LOGAN - John Edward Hoover, 83, of Logan, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, in Lancaster.
Born Feb. 29, 1920, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Edward Ezra and Abbie A. Long Hoover.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Flowers Hoover; a daughter, Judith Smith; and a son, Edward A. Hoover.
Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery, Rockbridge.

Margaret Ann Downey
Died: Friday, September 12, 2003
Age: 41
ATHENS - Margaret Ann “Peggy” Downey Fenn, 41, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003. She was born May 15, 1961, in Berwyn Heights, Md.
She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Louis Fenn, and their precious daughter, Kelsey Fenn, who joyfully exhibits their happy spirit and zest for life; her parents, Ronald J. and Mary Ann Downey; sisters and brothers-in-law Eileen and Bill Leuby and their daughters, Dianne and Marc Passen and their daughters, and Mary Downey; a brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Eloisa Downey and their sons; her grandmother-in-law, Laura Miranda; mother- and father-in-law, Frank Sr. and Alma Fernandez; sisters-in-law, Cecil Cochran and husband Chris, and Lori Fernandez and son; a brother-in-law and his wife, Frank and Kathy Fernandez and their sons; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and dearest friends.
She was a 1984 graduate of Ohio University and a devoted elementary teacher at Meadows School in Milbrae, Calif., Rock Creek School in Auburn, Calif, and Vallecito in San Rafael, Calif. Her artistic talents and ability to evoke humor in every aspect of life captured the hearts of all who came to know and love her.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, 2:30 p.m., at Christ Presbyterian Church, 620 Del Ganado Road, San Rafael, Calif. 94903.
Helen T. Smith
Died: Friday, September 12, 2003
Age: 81
POMEROY - Helen T. Smith, 81, of Pomeroy, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Veterans Hospital in Chillicothe.
Born Oct. 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Lillie Toler Thomas. She was a homemaker and an Army veteran of World War II.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Swain and Daphne Breeze; and a son, Rusty Holsinger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smith.
Military services will be held today, 1 p.m., at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Reedsville. Arrangements are by White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville.
Bertha L. Graves

Age: 76
RAY - Bertha L. Graves, 76, of Ray, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at her residence.
Born Sept. 5, 1927, in Ray, she was the daughter of the late Wayne and Ollie Branscom Tennant.
She is survived by six children, Leslie, Dale and Beverly Graves, Susie Hale, Lenora Ifon and Robin Lankford.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pearley L. Graves.
Services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Melvin Allen Poling Jr.
Died: Friday, September 12, 2003
MURRAY CITY - Melvin Allen Poling Jr., infant son of Melvin A. Poling Sr. and Jamie L. Whitmore Poling of Murray City, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Noah Christopher Michael Poling and Dylan Bradley Rister.
A graveside service was held today at St. Patrick Cemetery in Buchtel. Arrangements are by Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville.

ROCKBRIDGE - Marie Karshner, 92, of Rockbridge, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, in Logan.
Born Aug. 1, 1911, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late William W. and Sarah Elizabeth Elick Edwards. She is survived by three daughters, Eileen Nihiser, Marlene J. Riddle and Joyce Glenn.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Fairview United Methodist Church, Rockbridge. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Rockbridge.
Friends may call Monday, 2-9 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home in Logan and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ray Taylor Jr.

Age: 32
BUCHTEL - Ray “R.G.” Taylor Jr., 32, of Buchtel, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born Jan. 29, 1971, he was the son of Ray Sr. and Kathleen (Kathy) Tennihill Taylor. He was a member of the Eagles of Lancaster.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Ray Taylor III of Buchtel; a daughter, Natasha Rae Taylor of Columbus; three sisters, Teresa (Mike) MacCombs of Shade, Patricia Rae Taylor of Buchtel and Roberta Jo Taylor of Athens; and by his former wife and the mother of his children, Mary Ann (Steve) Cinciniti of Columbus.
He also is survived by his grandmothers, Mary Landis of Buchtel and Thelma Taylor of Pomeroy, and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, James Taylor and Robert Landis.
Services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with the Rev. Ernie Perkins officiating. Burial will be in Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel.
Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Roy E. Martin
Died: Friday, July 11, 2003
Age: 73
MILLFIELD - Roy E. Martin, 73, of Millfield, died Friday evening, July 11, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born March 5, 1930, in Vinton County, he was the son of the late Emeril Martin and Pauline Lighfoot Martin Coulson Balch. He was an honorary member of the Jacksonville VFW.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Jago Wilson Martin; two daughters, Karen Hutchinson of Ravenna and Kathy Bartholomew of Mantua; two sisters, Barbara (John) Balch of Millfield and Helen Smith of Florida; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Mark Martin; a wife, Lil Martin; a sister, Beatrice McDaniel; and a special friend, Helen Cowaski.
Roy was well liked and a friend to everyone; he will be sadly missed.
There will be no calling hours observed. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date at the Jacksonville VFW.

SHAWNEE - Bess J. Colvin, 82, of Shawnee, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2003, at her home.
Born March 15, 1921, in Shawnee, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Anna Wilson Hughes. She retired from Good Year of Logan, was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in New Lexington, a 1939 graduate of Shawnee High School and will be remembered for her garden and her love of flowers.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna (Paul) Barnes of McCuneville; three sons, George (Garnet) Colvin and Dan (Donna) Colvin, both of Corning, and Tom (Alicia Woofter) Colvin of Shawnee; a sister, Ruth Cullison of California; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Hughes of Mount Vernon and Margaret Hughes of New Straitsville; 12 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; a special friend, Ci Fielder of Shawnee; many friends and neighbors.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Fredrick James Colvin; four brothers, Joe, Jim, Bob and Bill Hughes; two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be held Wednesday, noon, at Humphrey Funeral Home in Shawnee, with Fred Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today after 6 p.m., and anytime on Tuesday.
