Jean Katheryn Ramsey
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 84

WELLSTON - Jean Katheryn Ramsey, 84, of Columbus, a former resident of Wellston, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 1, 2003, at New Albany Garden and Care Center.

Born in Wellston on March 18, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter N. Neary and Maude May Neary Coffman. Jean Katheryn was a loving mother and a former bookkeeper. She was a 1937 graduate of Wellston High School, and a member of Hope United Methodist Church in Wellston and Stonybrook United Methodist Church in Columbus.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Ramsey Walther of Columbus; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Linda Ramsey of Columbus; grandchildren Andy (Ann) Walther, Sean (Kathy) Walther, Brady (Jodi) Walther, Jennifer (Brian) Nordmoe, Chad (Britt) Ramsey and Alyson Ramsey; adopted grandchildren Christine and Jason Jones; 11 great-grandchildren; and a niece, Carolyn G. Pittenger of Wellston.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Ramsey, and her sister, Pauline Neary Gillen.

Service will be held today at 8 p.m. at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston, with the Rev. Glen Herman officiating. Cremation will follow, with burial in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, 8 p.m., at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Hope United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 620, Wellston 45692; or Hospice of Mount Carmel, 793 W. State St., Columbus 43222.

Leo W. Richards
Died: Tuesday, July 01, 2003
Age: 66

GLOUSTER - Leo W. Richards, 66, of Glouster, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at his residence.

Born June 27, 1937, in Glouster, he was the son of the late Norman “Snowball” and Gladys Sikorski Richards. He was married to Sarah “Linda” Swaro Richards for 43 years. He was a retired construction worker and horse trainer.

Besides his wife, he is survived by sons Norman (Debra) Richards of Buchtel and Todd Richards; daughters Tammy (Dave) Coffman and Brenda (Bryan) Christman of Glouster, and Rhonda Richards of Tiffin and her friend, Doug Dunlap; grandchildren Jill (Marty) Christa, Julie Richards, Cortney Christman, Cassie Christman, Jessica Richards, Matthew Christman and Brad Richards; brothers Charles “Chaz” (Ann) Richards, David (Alice) Richards and Paul (Barbara) Richards, all of Glouster, Phillip “Tom” (Vicky) Richards of New Boston, Mich., Stanley “Luke” (Debbie) Richards of Amesville and Stephen “Al” (Jody) Richards of The Plains; and sisters, Joanna (Gary) Stufflebean, Marilyn (Don) Holbert, Mary Russell and Josephine “Foo” (Mike) Falzone, all of Glouster.

In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by a sister, Rita Eing.

A funeral liturgy with Mass will be Friday, 10 a.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Glouster, with Fr. John Mucha officiating. Burial will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Friends may call at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m., and at the church that evening from 6 to 8. A Wake service will be held at the church at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Valerie Jo Manning
Died: Monday, June 30, 2003
Age: 50

COLUMBUS - Valerie Jo Manning, 50, of Columbus, passed away Monday, June 30, 2003, at Kobacker House, following a courageous battle against cancer.

She was a licensed practicing massage therapist for 20 years and was the owner of The Healing Touch. Previously, Valerie was manager of the massage department of the New Albany Country Club and a massage therapist at Penzone’s.

A devoted wife and loving friend, she is survived by husband, John Phillip Schmidt and his family; her brother, Greg Alan Manning; aunt and uncle, Judy Lynn and Don James Mervine, all of Akron; and many close friends.

Valerie was a 1971 graduate of Coventry High School in Akron and received a degree in social work from Kent State University in 1975. Previously married to one of the students who was shot at Kent State, Valerie has always been a staunch advocate and an integral part of the community that came together following the Kent State University shootings in 1970. She was an outstanding cook, avid gardener and loved blueberries. She was a tremendous source of knowledge of Bach flower essences and homeopathy. She was an expert in, and teacher of, macrobiotic cooking.

A Celebration of Life Gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the family farm of John and Fern Beathard, 7320 Big Plain-Circleville Road, in London. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Rural Action, P.O. Box 157, Trimble, 45782. Arrangements are by Schoedinger Northwest Chapel of Columbus.

Mabel Beatrice Jacobs
Died: Monday, June 30, 2003
Age: 84

THE PLAINS - Mabel Beatrice “Bea” Jacobs, 84, of The Plains, died early Monday morning, June 30, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.

Born Dec. 8, 1918, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Frank K. and Marie A. Young White. Mrs. Jacobs was a longtime area resident and attended New Marshfield schools.

She is survived by her husband, John H. Jacobs; two daughters, Roberta (George) Delrymple of Barnesville and Jane Cassner of Greenfield; two sons, George Jacobs of Nelsonville and David Jacobs of The Plains; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, John and Jacqueline Richey White of Glouster.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary Jacobs; a sister, Vera Eblen; and two brothers, Earl and Charles White.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.

Lucy B. Wiblin
Died: Friday, July 04, 2003
Age: 89

POMEROY - Lucy B. Wiblin, 89, of Long Bottom, died Friday, July 4, 2003, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.

Born Feb. 16, 1914, in Gay, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Daniel H. and Mary Harpold Tuttle. She is survived by a son, Dean Wiblin Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Wiblin Sr.

Services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Evans Cemetery, Gay.

Mildred M. Six
Died: Friday, July 04, 2003
Age: 83

MURRAY CITY - Mildred M. Six, 83, of Murray City, died Friday, July, 4 2003, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.

Born Oct. 30, 1919, in Murray City, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Nora Stephenson Hamer. She attended Murray City High School and was a retired cook for Murray City Schools.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Eugene F. Six; a son, Jan L. (Cheryl) Six of Nelsonville; a daughter-in-law, Kay Six of Murray City; grandchildren Mark Six of Murray City, Lora and Jim Hanning of Buchtel, Danny and Anita Six of Murray City, Tiffany and Steve McCombs of Nelsonville and Greg Six of Nelsonville; eight great-grandchildren; and grandson-in-law Malcolm Swope of Roseville.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Six; a granddaughter, Kathy Swope; and sisters, Bertha Gibbs, Ruth Jenks and Alberta Nutter.

Services were held this morning at Brown Funeral Home, Murray City. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery.

David McManus

Age: 71

HAMDEN - David McManus, 71, of Hamden, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at his home.

Born June 7, 1932, he was the son of the late Willis and Clara Woodruff McManus. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Stacey; children George and David McManus, Mary Beth Heckman, Kim Pemberton and Lee Easterday; and stepsons Kimber and James Stacey.

Services will be held Monday, 1 p.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home in Wellston. Burial will be at Elk Cemetery in McArthur.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Betty Jane Ester
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 70

LOGAN - Betty Jane Esters, 70, Logan, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, in the skilled nursing unit at Hocking Valley Community Hospital.

Born Jan. 26, 1933, in Union Furnace, she was the daughter of the late Carl William-Cecil and Geneva Alberta Stover Schultz.

She is survived by two sons, Jesse Earl Esters and Jonathan Earl Esters, and was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Earl Esters Sr.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Shaw Cemetery, Falls Twp.

Friends may call at the funeral home today and Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Emerson Houdashelt
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 72

POMEROY - Emerson Houdashelt, 72, of Pomeroy, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center in Pomeroy.

Morn March 31, 1931, he was the son of the late Walter Houdashelt and Gladys Conant Houdashelt Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Dailey Houdashelt, and children Becky Johnston and Randy Eugene Houdashelt.

Funeral services will be held at Ewing Funeral Home in Pomeroy on Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens.

Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 2 to 4 p.m., and 7 to 9 p.m.

Melvin M. Hook
Died: Thursday, July 03, 2003
Age: 69

McCONNELSVILLE - Melvin M. Hook, 69, of Big Botton Lane, Stockport, went home to be with the Lord early Thursday morning, July 3, 2003, at Genesis Morrison House Hospice in Zanesville.

Born Aug. 13, 1933, in Kimberly, he was the son of the late the Rev. Charles and Mae Sommers Hook. He was a retired maintenance worker for American Electric Power, where he worked for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Stockport United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Logan Moose Lodge and Webb Lodge 252 F&AM of Stockport.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Beth Goss Hook; three daughters, Teresa (John) Kalb of McConnelsville, Lori Beth (Bill) Campbell of Malta and Angie (Nat) Sherer of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Rick (Allyson) Hook of Malta; 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Evelyn Simonton of Lancaster and Garnet Sanborn of Clarksdale, Ariz.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Rachel Parrish and Virgie Stutes, and a brother, Charles Hook Jr.

Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Stockport United Methodist Church, with Pastor Dan Evory officiating. Burial will be in Stockport Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Morgan County Veterans roup..

Friends may call at Miller-Huck Funeral Home, McConnelsville, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. Masonic services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
