Roland Reynolds
Died: Thursday, June 12, 2003
Age: 77

ALBANY - Roland Reynolds, 77, of Reynolds Road, Albany, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.

Born Jan. 19, 1926, in Ligon, Ky., he was the son of the late Millford and Mary Isaac Reynolds. He was an Army veteran of Korea and a life member of Albany VFW Post 9893. He was a retired union plumber and pipefitter with Local 577, Portsmouth.

He is survived by daughters Wilma (Roy) Coleman of Grove City and Blinda (Howard) Easterling of Murray City; sons Garland (Barbara) Reynolds of Trimble and Derek Reynolds of Albany; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Aaron Reynolds of Gallipolis; and a sister, Liz McGinnis of Rio Grande.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annalene Henson Reynolds, in 1998; two brothers, Earl and Rufus Reynolds; and two sisters, Ethel Reynolds and Mary Alice Ray.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with Pastor Jim Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, where Albany VFW Post 9893 will conduct military graveside services.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Hugh Brooker
Died: Thursday, September 11, 2003
Age: 72

CANDYTOWN - Hugh Brooker, 72, of Candytown, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan.

Born in Candytown on Jan. 12, 1931, he was the son of the late Andrew and Olive Hutchison Brooker. A 1948 graduate of Carbon Hill High School, he was a longtime member and deacon at Carbon Hill Christian Church. He served in the Navy from 1950-1954 and was a second class petty officer stationed at Pearl Harbor. He was a member of Post 420 of the American Legion of Murray City and a member of I.B.E.W. Union 972 and served on the executive committee of the union.

At the age of 17, Mr. Brooker signed a professional baseball contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and played in their minor leagues. He also played for the Submarine Fleet Pacific Division U.S. Navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and was a member of the Hawaiian Armed Forces All-Stars in 1952. He was a member of the Nelsonville Old Timers Baseball Association, and coached and was very active in local youth baseball for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rita J. Gottke Brooker; sons Joseph M. (Susan M.) Brooker of Lafayette, Colo., and James H. (Peggy A.) Brooker of Newburgh, Ind.; daughter Leigh Ann Wright of Circleville; grandchildren Andy and Kaleigh Wright and Aaron J. and Sydney Grace Brooker; sister Beverly C. Brooker of Candytown; sisters-in-law, Fern Brooker Thomas and Marieta Brooker of Logan, Ruth Brooker of Nelsonville and Virginia Gottke of Columbus; brothers-in-law Reggie Levering of Logan, Harry Burgess of Logan and Norman Gillmore of Rome, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Novella Gottke of Bowling Green, Ky.; sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Bill Keating of Smithville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Bill, Mark and Cameron Brooker; a sister, Joann Levering; nephew Melvin Hugh Brooker; brother-in-law Bob Gottke; sisters-in-law Wanda Burgess and Betty Gillmore; sister and brother-in-law Martha and Harry Huston; and mother-in-law Beulah Gottke.

Funeral services will be Monday, 1 p.m., at Carbon Hill Christian Church, with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Calling hours at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, are today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Carbon Hill Christian Church.

Elsie M. Hines
Died: Thursday, September 11, 2003
Age: 86

POMEROY - Elsie M. Hines, 86, of Pomeroy, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.

Born Dec. 25, 1916, in Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Audrey Van Bibber Woode. She was a 1934 graduate of Chester High School, a member of Trinity Church and the Quilting Club of Trinity Church, Friendly Circle and Friendly Neighbors.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Hines, in 1993.

She is survived by sons, C. Ray (Jo Carol) Hines of Belpre and Roger (Donna) Hines of Logan; grandchildren David (Tama) Hines of Vienna, W.Va., John Douglas Hines of Belpre, Amy (Kris) Burger of Gallipolis and Andrea (Mike) Dooley of Newark; great-grandchildren Kyle and Allison Hines, Derek and Ryan Burger, Taylor and Ragen Dooley; and stepgreat-grandchildren Leah Dooley and Clinton Jennings.

Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy, with the Rev. Jonathan Noble officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from noon until the time of service.

Richard Blaine Chalfant
Died: Wednesday, September 10, 2003
Age: 93

BELMONT - Richard Blaine Chalfant, 93, of Belmont, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Ohio Valley Medical Center.

Blaine was a World War II veteran and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Bloom Presbyterian Church, Lodge 557 F&AM, OES Reber Chapter 161 and DAV of Lancaster.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; parents Perry Blaine and Ida Chalfant; and brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Darrel) Carruthers of Belmont; granddaughters Leslie (Patrick) Tyrrell of Chardon Twp., Carrie (Rich) Spung of Zanesville and Jamie (Brad) Vinskovich of Columbus; great-grandsons Liam Jacob Vinskovich and Carter Jacob Spung; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, with Pastor Thomas McGranor officiating. Interment will be in Lithopolis Cemetery.

Gerald R. Phillips
Died: Wednesday, September 10, 2003
Age: 67

THE PLAINS - Gerald R. Phillips, 67, of The Plains, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Lindley Inn, The Plains.

Born Jan. 11, 1936, he was the son of the late Cecil and Vesper Phillips. He was the husband of Connie Phillips, who survives.

Jerry was a Vietnam veteran who retired from the United States Army after 20 years of selfless service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Jerry is survived by sons Gerald (Holly) Phillips Jr. and Steven (Dawn) Phillips; a stepson, Jon (Kim) Norway; a daughter, Becky (Ronald) Norway; grandchildren Tara and Amber Phillips, Patrick and Robert Norway, and Tyler, Madison, Anne and Megan Phillips; a stepgranddaughter, Alexis Norway; and brothers Thomas and Danny Joe Phillips.

In addition to his parents, Jerry’s first wife, Wanda Phillips, preceded him in death in 1995.

Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with Pastor John Wright officiating. Interment will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

The family asks that contributions in Jerry’s name be made to the American Cancer Society.

Marion Florence Marcum
Died: Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Age: 74

LONG BOTTOM - Marion Florence Marcum, 74, of Corpus Christi, Texas, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003.

Born in Cleveland, she was the daughter of the late Adrian and Alma Suttis Birdsong.

She is survived by sons, Mike Marcum of Long Bottom, David and Dan Marcum.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Marcum; and a son, Clay Marcum.

Services will be held Monday, 10 a.m., at Sawyer-George Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. Burial will be in Sandia Cemetery, Texas.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m., with the family in attendance from 5 to 7.

George T. O'Hara
Died: Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Age: 96

LAURELVILLE - George T. O’Hara, 96, of Tarlton, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at Berger Hospital, Circleville.

Born Nov. 14, 1906, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Laura Huffman O’Hara. He was a member of Tarlton United Methodist Church.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha V. O’Hara; a daughter-in-law, Winnie O’Hara; four brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his children, Carl H. (Dixie) O’Hara of Strawberry, Ariz., Faye L. (Eugene) Winland of Laurelville, Benny C. (Marilyn) O’Hara of Laurelville and Gary T. (Gwen) O’Hara of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Nellie O’Hara, of Frankfort; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., in the chapel of Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 151 E. Main St., Circleville, with Pastor John Mittermaier officiating. Interment to follow in Tarlton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m.

Eleanor Edna Branch
Died: Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Age: 73

COOLVILLE - Eleanor Edna Branch, 73, of Belpre, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at her residence.

Born Jan. 11, 1930, in Lubeck, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur Ben and Ada Audell Teby Sams.

She is survived by her husband, John; a son, Richard; and a daughter, Jennifer Morrison.

Services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.

Thomas C. Martin
Died: Tuesday, September 09, 2003
Age: 67

RUTLAND - Thomas C. Martin, 67, of Frazeysburg, passed away peacefully at his home with his family by his side. His death followed a brief illness.

Born Nov. 15, 1935, in Dayton, he was the son of the late Louis D. and Dorothy Amelia Slattery Martin. He married Flo Marie Dennis on Nov. 8, 1958, in Zanesville.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; two daughters, Tamela A. (Rick) Larr and Abby M. (Scott) Fox; two sons, Timothy T. (Raquel) Martin and Eric D. (Jennifer) Martin; eight grandchildren, Marcus, Ryan and Victoria Larr, Thomas Fox, Natasha Hendershot, Taran Martin, Taylor and Claire Martin; seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nancy L. Martin.

Mr. Martin attended the University of Dayton for three years and graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. For 10 years, he was the owner and operator of the Martin Funeral Home in Rutland. In 1974, he was listed in the publication Who’s Who in Ohio. He and his family later relocated to Reynoldsburg. There, they became members of Calvary Christian Church, where he worked in rehabilitating homeless troubled teenagers. He started a painting business to give them jobs, and took many of them into his own home.

After moving to Frazeysburg, he and his wife developed and managed the Open Pantry, which served those in need in northern Muskingum County for 18 years. He was assisting in developing pantries in Coshocton County prior to his illness.

Mr. Martin had been a member of God’s Eternal Love Fellowship for the past two years. At the time of his death, he was the owner and operator of Martin Painting Co. but had dedicated his life to helping others in any way he could.

Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Snouffer Funeral Home Chapel, 1150 W. Military Road, Zanesville. Officiants will be Charles Andrew of Ninevah, Pa., and Stanley Brown of Pickerington. Burial will be in Frazeysburg Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care, 713 Forest Ave., Zanesville, Ohio 43731.
