In 1950, Bill graduated from Ohio State University College of Natural Resources, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau. He received a masters degree in botany from Ohio University in 1954.

For many years, he was employed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife and also the Division of Parks, as Ohio’s first chief naturalist. He became department director of natural resources and retired from Hocking College in 1981. He was proud of his many students, many of whom he kept in touch with throughout his life.

He was emeritus professor at Hocking College and helped to create the Bill Price Award, which is given to an outstanding naturalist for the Ohio Division of Parks and Recreation and is kept at Lake Hope Lodge.

Bill also is well known for his Sunday column in the Athens Messenger, “ Up On The Ridge,” which he wrote for almost 30 years. His tales of nicknames, kazoo parades, folk remedies and recipes entertained many.

He was a member of Glouster Lodge 607 and was a 32nd degree Mason of Valley of Columbus. He was a member of Murray City American Legion and Worthington Leasure Blackston Post 239 American Legion. Bill was also a social member of the VFW in Nelsonville.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Earleen” Price of Worthington; daughters Carol Swindaman and friend Pascal Thauvin of Seattle, Wash., and Marilyn (Phillip) Norman of Worthington; grandchildren Price Phillip, Phillip Eric and Riley Sunshine Norman, all who will miss Grandpa “Whoopee!” very much; his former wife, Lois S. A dedicated longtime OSU Buckeye fan, Bill looked forward to every game. He will be remembered most for his kind and gentle fun-loving spirit and for being a friend to all. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Riverside Methodist Hospital ICU.

At his request, no service will be held. A special gathering of friends to celebrate his life will take place in the spring.

Donations in his honor can be made to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation; Hocking College Natural Resources Department, Nelsonville; Nelsonville Public Library; Bluffsview Elementary School Library, Worthington; or the Nature Conservancy.
