Age: 75
ATHENS -- Blanche Lucille Efaw, 75, of Route 56, Athens, died unexpectedly early Wednesday afternoon, March 26, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born in The Plains, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Blanche Cochran Lovsey. She was a graduate of New Marshfield High School, a former employee of McBee Corp. Plant 2 and in the cafeteria, a cook for an Ohio University sorority and an office worker for C&E. She was a Fresh Silks Travel Party representative, and a member of Athens Emblem Club, K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion Auxiliary and Ladies Auxiliary 8/40.
She is survived by a daughter, Debra (Alan) Metzel of Wadsworth; a son, Dean (Rosemary) Efaw of Athens; a granddaughter, Kerri Metzel of Wadsworth; six stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (Dean) Gabriel of Groveport, Norma (Roger) Bartlett and LaDonna (Don) Haning, both of Albany; brothers-in-law, George Rhorick of New Marshfield and Bill Lieuellen of Albany; sisters-in-law, Donna Efaw and Margureite Efaw; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl F. Efaw, in 1986; sisters, Alma Rhorick, Margaret Hunter, Gertrude Lieuellen and Juanita Lovsey; and brothers, Harrison, Johnny, Herbert and Gilbert Lovsey.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, conducted by Pastor David Cogar. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery.

Larry Gnatowski
Died: Wednesday, March 26, 2003
AMESVILLE -- Larry Gnatowski, beloved husband of Roxanne Groff, died at his beautiful home near Amesville on March 26, 2003.
Larry's work as a physician assistant touched the lives of many people in Southeastern Ohio for the past 25 years. Born Aug. 30, 1946, in Cleveland, he was the son of Edward John Gnatowski and the late Clara Gnatowski. Larry's compassion for life and his gentle ways will stay with us forever.

Blanch L. Tippie

Age: 92
STEWART -- Blanch L. Tippie, 92, of Stewart, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Born June 10, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Elsie Anna King Dunfee.
She is survived by a son, Carl Vernon (Helen) of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Elsie "Sissy" and Rodney Murvay of Reynoldsburg; a stepson, Charles (Gabriel) Tippie of Texas; a stepdaughter, Bernita Stauffer of Chillicothe; a brother-in-law, Paul Barnhart of Stewart; a brother, Mull "Tim" of Guysville; grandchildren Eddie and Rhonda Barnhart, Patty and Vern Gabriel of Stewart, Rick and Diane Barnhart of West Virginia, Carla and Jim Proudfoot, Myra and Bruce Brown, all of Maryland, Janet Phillips, Deron, Wendy and Eric Tippie of Westerville; great-grandchildren, Kim and Keith Barnhart, Mike, Mark and Jennifer Gabriel, all of Stewart, Tim and Laura Proudfoot, Mark and Rachel Brown, all of Maryland, and Sara Tippie of Westerville; and great-grandchildren, Erica, Ryon Mike and Jacob.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Acel L. Tippie; a son, Frank Tippie; a daughter, Berdena Barnhart; a great-grandson, Steven Johnson; and five brothers, Elmer, Wood, Elza "Jiggs," Grant and Steve; three sisters, Mary, Elsie "Hoodie" and Letha; three half brothers; and sisters Lester, Bessie and Sye.
Services will be held Sunday, 3 p.m., at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home in Coolville. Burial will be in Stewart Cemetery.

Fanny Catherin Gastin
Died: Tuesday, March 25, 2003
Age: 83
HAYDENVILLE -- Fanny Catherine Gastin, 83, of McConnelsville, formerly of Haydenville, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the home of a daughter.
Born March 31, 1919, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Agnes Hickman Wolfe.
She is survived by sons, Mark and Michael Gastin; and daughters, Cathy Robson, Norma Jean Gastin and Mary Louise Hull.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Logan Church of God. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, Wellston.

William L. Shivers
Died: Monday, March 24, 2003
Age: 79
BUCHTEL -- William L. Shivers, 79, of Lancaster, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 24, 2003, at his residence.
He was born in 1924 in Lansing, Mich., and moved to Buchtel as a child. After years of employment as an auditor for the state of Ohio and for Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, he moved to the Lancaster area where he was a well-respected CPA for more than 30 years. Dedicated to his profession, he was still working until the time of his death.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 60 years, Shirley Shivers; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol Shivers and Mike Atrostic of Lancaster; sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Frances Shivers of Lancaster, and Donald Shivers of Columbus; three grandchildren, Robert Shivers, Carrie Stewart and Jenniver Shivers; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Shirley Ketler of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Wilma Shivers; a grandson, Richard Shivers; and a daughter-in-law, Carol Shivers.
William will be missed by all who knew him.
Services will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at Frank E. Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster, with Pastor Mark Dupler officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

NEW STRAITSVILLE -- Elizabeth A. Duffy-Fink, 90, of Lancaster, formerly of New Straitsville, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation-Homestead, Lancaster.
Born April 20, 1912, in New Straitsville, she was the daughter of the late George and Matilda "Tillie" Dishong Vernon. She was a retired librarian, attended New Hope United Methodist Church in Gore, and was a former employee of Wards Confectionary and Hazel Miller Store, a former member and treasurer of New Straitsville Senior Center and a former member of New Straitsville Historical Group.
She is survived by a stepson, Leonard David (Linda) Fink of Gore; stepdaughters Mrs. Jack (Karla Ann) Linton of Louisville, Mrs. Kenneth (Martha Sue) Waugh of Shawnee, Mrs. Stephen (Roberta K.) McGraft of Hemlock and Mrs. Jerry (Lois Jean) Love of Crooksville; several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; sisters Mrs. Edward (Kathleen) Jones of New Straitsville and Virginia Wilson of McConnelsville; and several nieces and nephews, including Diana and Phil Spurgus, with whom she made her home.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Duffy and Winton Karl Fink; brothers Clyde, Clarence, Howard and Harold Vernon; and sisters Sue McQuaide and Grace Craig.
Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at New Hope United Methodist Church, Gore, with the Rev. Terry Priest officiating. Burial will be in New Straitsville Cemetery.

LOGAN -- Esther Pauline "Polly" Gabriel, 83, of Logan, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, in Logan.
Born March 17, 1919, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Otto and Millicent Paget Rose. She is survived by a son, Ned Kelly Gabriel, and daughters Bonnie St. Clair, Sandy Wells and Kathy Speicher.
Services will be today, 2 p.m., at Immanuel United Methodist Church, Logan. Friends may call today at 1 p.m. at the church.

Edith Lee Milburn

MIAMISBURG -- Edith Lee Milburn of Miamisburg, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at 6:30 p.m.
Born July 10, 1914, in Nelsonville, she was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. James E. Lee.
Edith attended grade school in Nelsonville and graduated from Nelsonville High School in 1931. She graduated from Ohio University in 1935. She then taught at elementary schools in Wapakoneta and Nelsonville, including the same Nelsonville Central School she had previously attended. She also was employed at government projects as a teacher.
She married Jack Milburn, who is interred at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Edith leaves sisters Kathryn Swearingen of Columbus, Ruth (Robert) Ayers of Wooster and June Light of Coshocton; brothers Clayton (Kathyrn) Lee of Miamisburg, Jim (Betty) Lee of Columbus; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews who will sorely miss her. She was preceded in death by sisters Majel, Wanda and Virginia.
Funeral service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Warren Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Calling hours will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
John Allen Simmons Jr.
Died: Thursday, February 6, 2003
Age: 46
ATHENS -- John Allen Simmons Jr., 46, of Athens, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
Born Nov. 9, 1956, in Parkersburg, W.Va., he was the son of John and Lois Walker Simmons of Chesterhill.
Besides his parents, he is survived by a son, John Allen Simmons III, and a daughter, Lisa Simmons.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Liberty United Brethern Church, Bartlett. Arrangements are by Stone-Metheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill.
