George Eugene Stump

LOGAN -- George Eugene "Bugeye" Stump, 61, of Logan, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at his residence.
Born Feb. 5, 1942, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Merle Wayne and Mabel Dorothy Bailey Stump. He is survived by his wife, Angelika Martha Wessels Stump.
A memorial Mass will be Monday, 11 a.m., at St. John Catholic Church, Logan.
Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan, on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m., where a Christian Vigil will be held at 6.

Bill J. Whaley
Died: Thursday, February 6, 2003
Age: 67
ATHENS -- Bill J. Whaley, 67, of Athens, died unexpectedly Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2003, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
Born March 25, 1935, in Hebbardsville, he was the son of the late James W. and Helena E. Shuler Whaley.
Mr. Whaley was involved in business, insurance and real estate in the Athens area. He was owner of Athens Office Supply and a member of the Million Dollar Roundtable of A.L. Williams Insurance. He was a 1954 graduate of Athens High School and a 1962 graduate of Ohio University, where he was an outstanding athlete. Between high school and college, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Alaska, where he played on the Air Force base basketball team. At Ohio University, he was coached by Jim Snyder and Kermit Blosser. The team had two MAC championships and two NCAA Tournament berths. Bill won three varsity letters at OU, was tri-captain, team MVP and All MAC team his senior year. At his graduation, he was the fifth leading scorer at OU, with 925 career points. He was inducted into the OU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. The OU press guide listed Bill as a "superb floor general and one of the finest little men in the conference," the "type of ballplayer that if you give him an inch, he'll take a mile."
His career also involved teaching and coaching. He was a basketball coach and teacher at Albany High School, where he coached the 1964-65 team to the state Class A semifinals. He returned to coaching with the Alexander High School Spartans from 1979-84. During his tenure as coach, Albany and Alexander won several conference championships and participated in several state post-season tournaments. In his 10 years of coaching, Whaley had a win/loss record of 172-56.
Bill was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and AMVETS Post 76.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen L. Newhouse Whaley; a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Steve Potochney of Norwalk, Conn.; a son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Marie Whaley of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren Brandon Whaley, and Jack and Grace Ellen Potochney; a sister, Joanne Saunders of Athens; nieces Cindy Parker and Debbie Marsh of Las Vegas, Nev., and Felicia Newhouse of Seattle, Wash.; nephews Jim and Mike Turner of Las Vegas, Don Saunders of Atlanta, Ga., and Emil Newhouse of Seattle; and brothers-in-law Leonard Newhouse of Mount Vernon, Ohio, and John Newhouse of Seattle.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sister, Bonna Jean Turner.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, 11 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church, with Fr. Martin Holler officiating. Burial will be in Alexander Cemetery.
Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, on Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 7.
Milford "Toar" Griffen
Died: Wednesday, February 5, 2003
Age: 79
BELPRE -- Milford "Toar" Griffen, 79, of Belpre, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va.
Born June 24, 1923, in Tuppers Plains, he was the son of the late Herbert E. and Millie Catherine Wigal Griffen. He was a Navy veteran, a member of American Legion Post 15 and VFW Post 1212, both of Parkersburg, and Coolville VFW Post 3478. He was a member of Coolville Masonic Lodge 337 F&AM and Coolville United Methodist Church. He worked for Carthage-Troy School System for 28 years and also had worked for Ned's Truck Stop.
Survivors include a stepson and his wife, Ken and Emma Cowdery of Vienna, W.Va.; six stepgrandchildren, Gail Cowdery, Cheryl Cowdery, Kim Cowdery, Rhonda Cowdery, Sam Bell and Nora Burris; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Brett Cowdery and Ansley Cowdery; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Daisey Cowdery and Kieman Kenny; and a number of nieces and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Garnet Shields Griffen, and five brothers.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Leavitt Funeral Home, Belpre, with Pastor Buddy Bunner officiating. Burial will be in Torch Cemtery, with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Raymond Kirk

Age: 79
MIDDLEPORT -- Raymond Kirk, 79, of Middleport, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, in Middleport.
Born Aug. 30, 1923, in Hobson, he was the son of the late David and Pearl King Kirk. He is survived by his wife, Christina Burns Kirk.
Private family services will be held. There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are by Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport.
Marjorie Courtney Lambrecht
Died: Wednesday, February 5, 2003
Age: 83
COLUMBUS -- Marjorie Courtney Lambrecht, 83, of Columbus, Ohio, passed in Atlanta, Ga., on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003. She had been in declining health for several years.
Marge was a longtime member of Children's Hospital TWIG and active member and organizer of Block Watch. She was best known for her association with the Niagara Cyclo Massage business she operated with her husband, Frank Lambrecht, from 1955 until the early '80s.
She is survived by her sons, Chris Lambrecht of Sandy Springs, Ga., and John Lambrecht of Sarasota, Fla.; her grandchildren, Susan Smith, Michael Lambrecht, Nicholas Lambrecht, Austin Lambrecht, Brandt Morehouse and Christopher Morehouse; and four great-grandchildren.
Marge was born in Beaumont, Athens County, in 1919 and moved to Columbus early in life. She returned to the Hocking Valley to attend Ohio University.
A memorial service is being held Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at Eastminister Presbyterian Church, 3100 E. Broad St., at Harding Road, Columbus. Marge had requested that donations be made to Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers.
Martha Carter
Died: Monday, February 3, 2003
Age: 92
CHESTERHILL -- Martha "Madge" Carter, 92, of Chesterhill, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Bethesda Hospital, Zanesville.
Born July 24, 1910, in Chesterhill, she was the daughter of the late Hiram and Mattie Richardson Thomas. She is survived by children Jean Oyer, Jane Bowman, Nancy Surratt and James Roger Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hobart R. Carter.
Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at Chesterhill United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Chesterhill Cemetery.

Doris M. Cowen Eichelberger
Died: Monday, February 3, 2003
Age: 85
ATHENS -- Doris M. Cowman Eichelberger, a former Athens resident, passed away on Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in Potomac, Md., at the age of 85.
Born in Greenfield, Ohio, in 1917, she graduated from Edward R. McClain High School. A graduate of Grant Hospital School of Nursing, she worked throughout her life as a registered nurse in a variety of settings, including First Community Village. Her hobbies included sewing, reading and horses.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Robert H. Todhunter and H. Thomas Eichelberger.
She is survived by her brother, Delbert G. Cowman of Columbus; her children, Robin Todhunter of Athens, Janis Todhunter of Maui, Hawaii, and the Rev. James A. Todhunter of Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She leaves stepchildren Brian Eichelberger and James Alan Eichelberger.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens.
Melvin V. Ervin
Died: Monday, February 3, 2003
Age: 78
WELLSTON -- Melvin V. Ervin, 78, of Wellston, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Jenkins Memorial Assisted Living Facility, Wellston.
Born April 19, 1924, in Wellston, he was the son of the late Leo and Molly Patton Ervin. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
He is survived by daughters Melva Beth Ervin and Gretchen Crabtree. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilda Ervin.
Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Post 371.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m.

James Edward King
Died: Monday, February 3, 2003
Age: 65
COALTON -- James Edward King, 65, of Coalton, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at his residence.
He was the son of the late Arthur and Elizabeth Vititoe King. He is survived by two daughters, Carol Sanderson and Connie Vaughn, and three sons, David, Jerry and Michael King.
Services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston, with burial in Puritan Cemetery, Hamden.
