Rosie Sharpe
Died: Monday, June 3, 2002
NELSONVILLE -- Rosie Sharpe, 65, of The Plains, formerly of Nelsonville, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
She was born July 16, 1936, in Vinton County, daughter of the late John and Carrie Marie Marks Kimmey.
She is survived by two brothers, Clarence and John Kimmey of Nelsonville; and a sister, Edna Speelman of Nelsonville.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Elmer Kimmey; and infant twin sisters.
Services will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with Pastor Lewis Dunnells officiating. Interment will be in Whitmore Cemetery, Buchtel.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bernice Evener
Died: Tuesday, February 26, 2002
ALBANY -- Bernice L. Evener, 72, of Albany, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 14, 1929, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Joshua and Melda Cheadle Perry.
She is survived by three sons, James (Cathy) Smith of Albany, Roger (Marilyn) Smith of Clarksburg, W.Va., and Dale (Amy Hudnell) Evener of Shade; a daughter, Linda (John) Weston of Morgan County; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and a brother, Les (Mildred) Perry of Columbus.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Evener; a son, Edward Smith; and three brothers and a half sister.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home in Athens, with Pastor H. Willard Love officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Martina Hughes
Died: Tuesday, February 26, 2002
BUCHTEL -- Martina Hughes, 86, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Manor of Whitehall.
Born in Buchtel, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Dessie Gunter. She was a former member of Nelsonville United Methodist Church and a 1933 graduate of Nelsonville High School.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Marilyn Stewart.
She is survived by a grandson, Brett Dale Stewart of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Mary Mathews; cousins Connie McClain, Janie Dial and Debbie Dial; and a special friend, Judy Thompson.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Nelsonville Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Mike Thompson officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.
Arrangements are by O.R. Woodyard Co. Chapel, 255 E. State St., Columbus.
Mildred Gibbs
Died: Saturday, February 23, 2002
LOGAN -- Mildred W. Gibbs, 84, of Logan, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, in Logan.
Born March 18, 1917, in Logan, she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Christina Ellinger Frasure.
There will be no services. Her ashes will be buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan. Arrangements are by Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan.
Charles McCallister
Died: Friday, February 22, 2002
THE PLAINS -- Charles E. McCallister, 77, of The Plains, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Oct. 23, 1924, in The Plains, he was the son of the late John and Thelma Hawk McCallister. He was retired from Ohio University and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theatre. He was a charter member of Chauncey AMVETS, a life member of American Legion Post 21 and The Plains VFW Post 7174, a member of 40 et 8 Post 21, and one of the founding members of The Plains Volunteer Fire Department with more than 25 years of service.
He is survived by a son, William (Ella) McCallister of Albany; a stepdaughter, Patricia (Joe) Smathers of Athens; two stepsons, Lewis Meek of Athens and Robert (Cindy) Meek of The Plains; a grandson, eight stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Norma Rypma of The Plains; and four brothers, Robert McAllister of Coshocton, Larry McAllister of Texas, David McAllister of Logan and Dennis McAllister of Athens.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cleo, and a brother, Richard McAllister.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with John Elswick officiating. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by the American Legion and Athens VFW. An Irish Wake will be held at the American Legion following the burial.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 5 p.m. A service by 40 et 8 will be conducted today at 5 p.m.
Samuel Meek
Died: Friday, February 22, 2002
ATHENS - Samuel W. Meek, 82, of Athens, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born Jan. 25, 1920, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Allen and Bertha Johnson Meek.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European campaign and the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from Ohio University's athletics department. He served many years at Ohio University pass gates for football and basketball games.
He is survived by a son, Anthony E. (Julie) Meek; two grandchildren, Samuel L (Heather) Meek and Anthony E. Meek; a stepgranddaughter, Amanda Van Auken; a beloved great-granddaughter, Jordan Elaine Meek; a brother, Don (Lucille) Meek; and a former daughter-in-law, Shelia Shaw.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thresa, who died on June 23, 2001; and a sister, Geraldine McGraner.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be m Athens Memory Gardens, where military services will be conducted by Albany VFW.

LOGAN -- Marie Vernice Bailey, 80, of Logan, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at her residence.
Born Oct. 8, 1921, in Helen, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ulysses Grant and Lura Francis Blevins Hensley.
Services will be held Saturday, 10:30 a.m., at Logan First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in New Fairview Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Good Hope Twp., Hocking County.
Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Born May 24, 1914, in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Aaron and Mattie Penrod.

Mildred Cox

WILKESVILLE -- Mildred Murphy Cox, 80, of Columbus, formerly of Wilkesville, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2002, at New Albany Care Center.
Born Aug. 31, 1921, in Belfry, Ky., she was the daughter of the late William and Anna Thompson Murphy.
She is survived by children Wilma Rohl, Roberta Yates, Romona Hitchens, Glenna Miller, James Cox, Charles Cox and Jerry Cox. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wade, and a child, Tincy Cox.
Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Cox Family Cemetery near Wilkesville.

Born Nov. 4, 1922, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Pluma Pickrell Wooley.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold F. Jones; and her second husband, Walter V. Smith.
