BARTLETT -- Herbert E. Dillinger, 84, of Bartlett, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Marietta Rehabilitation Center.

Born Sept. 7, 1918, in Nelsonville, he was the son of late Herbert and Lucy Mansfield Dillinger. He is survived by a stepdaughter, Brenda Holly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Stacks Dillinger.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home, Chesterhill. Burial will be in Bartlett Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Bartlett Fire Department/Emergency Squad, Bartlett 45713; or Bartlett United Methodist Church, c/o Linda Corbitt, Route 550, Cutler 45724.

Herbert E. Dillinger

Ruth H. Law
Died: Tuesday, January 28, 2003
Age: 69

LOGAN -- Ruth H. Law, 69, of Logan, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003, at Logan Health Care Center.

She was born June 17, 1933, in Kermit, W.Va., daughter of the late John and Mahalla Lowe Hodge. She is survived by her husband, Robert C. Law.

Services will be Friday, 11 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Port William.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday one hour prior to services.

Alice Paxton
Died: Thursday, January 23, 2003
Age: 94

ATHENS -- Alice Paxton, 94, of Centerville, formerly of St. Clairsville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003.

Alice was a former member of Thoburn Methodist Church in St. Clairsville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Paxton, architect; an infant son, Edward; and a grandson, Andrew Paxton.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Harry Bumgarner of Waynesville; a brother and sister -in-law, Dr. Bruce and Aline Paxton of Athens; five grandchildren, Adam Bumgarner, Aaron (Kristi) Bumgarner, Dr. John Telfair Paxton, A. Elizabeth DeGraw and Dr. Julia (Jesus) Pagan; and four great-grandchildren, Eric and Daniel Pagan, and Christina and James DeGraw.

Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Children's Hospital Foundation, The Andy Paxton Fund, P.O. Box 16810, Columbus, OH 43272-5117.

Arrangements are by Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville.

Chester L. Carpenter
Died: Wednesday, January 22, 2003
Age: 87

ATHENS -- Chester L. Carpenter, 87, of Athens, died late Wednesday afternoon Jan. 22, 2003, at Arcadia Acres Nursing Center, Hocking County.

Born March 22, 1915, in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Dana and Verna Stiles Carpenter. He was a former resident of The Plains, Athens and Albany, a former employee of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and a former taxi driver. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a lifetime member of The Plains VFW Post 7174.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Hattie Carpenter of Albany; a daughter, Carol Ann Carpenter of Albany; a stepdaughter, Marjorie Williams of Bourbonnais, Ill.; sons Richard (Paula) Carpenter of St. Cloud, Fla., and Raymond Carpenter of The Plains; stepsons Charles (Nettie) Miller of Albany and Jack (Marlene) Miller of Calhoun, Mo.; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; a sister, Leota O'Conner of Taylor, Mich.; and a brother, Melvin Carpenter of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Jimmy; a grandson, Steven Wyman; sisters Mary Reep, Rosalee Daniels and Enid Cantaburg; and brothers Jerry and Wayne Carpenter.

Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens, with military rites conducted by K.T. Crossen American Legion Post 21 and Athens VFW Post 3477.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to services.

Mary Elizabeth Cox Mills
Died: Wednesday, January 22, 2003
Age: 101

THE PLAINS -- Mary Elizabeth Cox Mills died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains. She was 101.

She was the widow of the late George Mills, an Athens accountant, whom she married in 1976 and who died in 1992. Mrs. Cox moved to Athens in 1972 after the death of her first husband, Marshall Hugh Cox Sr., a title company executive who died in 1967.

She is survived by a younger son, James Samuel (Sarah Ann) Cox, an accounting professor at Ohio University; and an older son, Marshall (Nathalie) Cox, a retired New York lawyer.

Born in Osceola Mills, Pa., on April 26, 1901, Mary was the middle child of James Samuel and Agnes Showers Bateman. Her early childhood was spent in the Western Pennsylvania coalfields until her father took work in Cleveland, Ohio, to assure that his sons would not work in the mines. She was preceded in death by eight siblings, Guy, Ethyl Swanbeck, Ella Carnes, Ray, Madelon Klotzbach, Robert, Lorenz and Harold; and a grandson, Marshall Cox III, in 1978.

Mrs. Mills was secretary to the head of Marine Hospital in Cleveland before and in the early years of her first marriage. Like both her husbands, she was an avid antique collector. She had a particular interest in Argus thumbprint glass, historical blueware and American art glass. She was a well-respected dealer and authority on antiques, first in Austintown, Ohio, and later in Avon, Ohio. She was a lifelong member of Methodist Churches and, upon her marriage to George Mills, became a member of Athens First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Urania Chapter 23 in Painesville, had been a member of PEO Sisterhood Chapter G, the Reading Club and the Social Literary Club in Athens.

In addition to her sons and daughters-in-law, Mary is survived by five grandchildren (four spouses) and eight great-grandchildren: Vanessa Mary (Toru) Nishikubo, Ayumu and Ryo; Kathryn Ann Cox (Stewart Henderson), Nathaniel and Joshua Henderson-Cox; Marcella Lynne (James) Warner, Abigail and Austin; Melinda Susanne (Gregg) Leblanc, Elise Nedra and Samuel George; and James Samuel Cox Jr. and his fiancee Sarah Hickmott.

Arrangements are by Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens. Interment will be in Lakewood Park Cemetery, Rocky River.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Appalachian Visiting Nurses Association, P.O. Box 768, Athens, 45701; or a church or charity of choice.

Roy Eugene Powell
Died: Wednesday, January 22, 2003
Age: 50

POMEROY -- Roy Eugene Powell, 50, of Pomeroy, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant.

Born Jan. 3, 1953, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late Earl Ivan and Delores Ada Massey Powell.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Wolfe Powell and children Roy Eugene Powell Jr., Ryan Matthew Powell and Mandy Renee Powell.

Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Jean O. Beshara
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 82

GLOUSTER -- Jean O. Beshara, 82, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Bishop's Glen Nursing Home in Florida.

Born in London, England, she came to the United States in 1948. She resided in Glouster until she moved to Florida in 1992. She was a librarian in Glouster for the Athens County Public Library system for 28 years. Mrs. Beshara loved books.

She is survived by her husband, Joseph, to whom she was married for 54 years; a daughter, Julia (Richard) Karns of Port Orange, Fla.; two grandsons, Joseph Karns of Port Orange and Christian Karns of Fayetteville, Ga.; four granddaughters, Katherine of Port Orange, Stephanie Matheny of The Plains, Susan Wright of Columbus and Bridget Tryon of Michigan; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Wright; and a sister, Dorothy Wood.

Private services will be held at a later date in New Lexington.

Arrangements are under the direction of Volusia Memorial Funeral Home in Port Orange.

Harry B. Crewson Jr.
Died: Tuesday, January 21, 2003
Age: 89

ATHENS -- Harry B. Crewson Jr., 89, of Sebring, died at Crandall Medical Center, Sebring, Tuesday morning, Jan. 21, 2003, following a lengthy illness.

He was born March 16, 1913, to Harry B. Crewson and Laura Shewell. He was married to Martha Adeline Walker for 49 years.

Mr. Crewson graduated from Sebring High School in 1931, where he later returned to teach. Following high school, he attended and graduated from The College of Wooster in 1935, followed by a teaching stint at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, from 1938 to 1940. He served in the U.S. Army, 386th Artillery, Infantry Division, from 1943 to 1945. After the war, Mr. Crewson obtained his masters and Ph.D. in economics from Ohio State University and began a 30-year career as a professor in the Department of Economics at Ohio University. During his career at Ohio University, he was a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii and the Mara Institute in Malaysia. In 1974-75, he was the 17th president of Ohio University. He was president of Athens City Council from 1963 to 1973 and was acting mayor of Athens in 1971.

He founded the Ohio University Employees' Credit Union in 1955, the first university credit union in Ohio. Currently, it has $147 million in assets, $129 million in total deposits, and 20,000 members. As an honor to him as founder, the credit union established the Dr. Harry B. Crewson Scholarship Fund, benefiting Ohio University students.

During his tenure on City Council and as president of the university, he mediated several disputes between the city and its employees, as well as the university and its employees, ending or averting strikes. Following retirement, he used these mediation skills as a labor negotiator in many state and regional labor disputes.

As president of Ohio University, he was instrumental in the establishment of its medical college, the College of Osteopathic Medicine, the state's first osteopathic medical school, improved enrollment figures after years of decline, reduced tension on the campus after a series of national and local student demonstrations, enhanced general education programs and advocated a strong emphasis on international programs.

Among the awards presented to him are Distinguished Service, City of Athens; Lifetime Service and Achievement, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce; Nineteen Years of Dedicated Service, Ohio University Employees' Credit Union Board; Trustee Professor Economics, Ohio University Board of Trustees; Honorary Alumnus, Ohio University Alumni Association; and The Phillips Medal of Public Service, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Mr. Crewson was pre-deceased by his parents; his wife, Martha Adeline Walker, who died in 1990; and his sisters, Neva Henderson and Martha Steed.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Williams; his sister, Ila Grisez; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen Crewson Randall and Keith Randall of North Canton; his son and daughter-in-law, John Walker Crewson and Cara Sansonia of Boca Raton, Fla.; his grandson, Brad Randall of Austin, Texas; his granddaughters, Marisa Bingham of Seattle, Wash., and Carrie Sawtell of North Canton; two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at Bennett Chapel, Copeland Oaks, Sebring, on Saturday at 9:30 a.m., officiated by Mr. Crewson's cousin, the Rev. Norman Crewson. The family will receive friends and family following the service at the Williamsburg Room, Copeland Oaks.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Dr. Harry B. Crewson Scholarship Fund, which is maintained by the Ohio University Employees' Credit Union. Contributions should be sent in care of the Ohio University Employees' Credit Union, P.O. Box 476, Athens, Ohio 45701.
