TUPPERS PLAINS -- Boyd T. "Pappy" Spurlock, 78, of Tuppers Plains, formerly of Hurricane, W.Va., died at his residence on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002.
Born Oct. 10, 1924, in Lincoln County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alonzo and Georgia Alford Spurlock.
He is survived by a son, Boyd T. Jr.; two daughters, Elizabeth Spurlock and Patricia Kee; seven stepsons, Ronald, Daniel, David, Gary, Voyd Jr., Rodney and Don; and five stepdaughters, Barbara Bissell, Kay Lanham, Kathy Walker, Carol Dodge and Pam Boyd.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Harper Spurlock; and a stepson, C.L. Spurlock.
Services were today at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial was in Culloden Cemetery, Culloden, W.Va.
Norman Edward Baum
Died: Saturday, December 28, 2002
Age: 72
POMEROY -- Norman Edward Baum, 72, of Chester, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at his home.
Born March 5, 1930, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Cassie Rice Baum.
He is survived by children Sharon Conry, Darlene Frederick, Susan Baum, Norman Kekic, William Baum, David Baum and James Brian Baum.
Services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 9 p.m.
Bertha Jeanne Harrison
Died: Saturday, December 28, 2002
Age: 86
LOGAN -- Bertha Jeanne Harrison, 86, of Logan, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002.
Born Jan. 9, 1916, in Hocking County, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Beatrice Lehman Edwards. She is survived by her son, James Harrison of Westerville, and daughters Sandra Bartels, April Harrison and Paula Wallace.
Funeral services are Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial of Mrs. Harrison's cremains will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from noon to 2 p.m.

John Edward Lewis

Age: 75
BUCHTEL -- John Edward "Rinky Dink" Lewis, 75, of Buchtel, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Pine Hills Continuing Care Center, Nelsonville.
Born Jan. 22, 1927, in Columbus, he was the son of the late Morris Edward and Jenevera Ellen Grubbs Lewis. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a sheet metal worker, a life member of The Plains VFW, and a member of Murray City American Legion, Murray City Eagles, Glouster Masonic Lodge and Aladdin Shrine of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Jane Lewis of The Plains; a son and daughter-in-law, John David "Sam" and Mary Lewis of Athens; daughters Linda Lea Lewis and Pauletta Jane Poches and her fiancˇ, Tom Barrera, of The Plains; grandchildren Michelle Lynn Rawlins and Michael Joseph Lewis of Nelsonville, and Corey Michael Poches of The Plains; great-grandchildren Mariah, Lindsay and Trey of Nelsonville; and sisters Barbara Jean Doss of Columbus, and Ann Elizabeth Regal and Geneva Ellen Moore of Pompano Beach, Fla.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Nel-Letta Pell and Frieda Faye Rush; a twin sister, Mary Edith Lewis; and brothers Robert Morris Lewis and George Emory Lewis.
A graveside memorial service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Nelsonville, with Elder Alan Stretch officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Combined Color Guard Unit.
There will be no calling hours observed.

Ruth O. Morrow
Died: Saturday, December 28, 2002
WELLSTON -- Ruth O. Morrow of Wellston passed away on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Four Winds Nursing Facility.
Born June 23, 1909, in Wellston, she was the daughter of the late George and Emma Sims Evans. Ruth was a 1927 graduate of Hamden High School, a former assistant postmaster for Dundas Post Office and a former employee of Cooper's restaurant in McArthur. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Wellston and a former member of Dundas United MethodistChurch and Dundas Sewing Circle.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Robert and Bonny Morrow of Wellston, Delbert Eugene Morrow and Bertina Hurt of Grove City, and Donald and Florace(cq) Morrow of Columbus; sisters Mary and Clarnence(cq) Morrow of Dundas, and Louise Rice of Chillicothe; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, including Phyllis Roush of Jackson.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Morrow, in 1938; brothers Raymond "Snuffy" Evans and Sanford Evans; and a sister, Helen Davis.
Services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home, Wellston, with Pastor Paula Christian officiating. Burial will be in Hamden Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 240 S. New York Ave., Wellston.
Cynthia R. Wentis
Died: Saturday, December 28, 2002
Age: 76
GLOUSTER -- Cynthia R. Wentis, 76, a resident of The Pines at Glenwood, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Marietta Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 29, 1926, in Glouster, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Gladys Zollinger Richardson.
Mrs. Wentis attended Ward-Belmont School in Tennessee and graduated in 1948 from Denison University in Granville. While in college, she met her husband, Bernard "Bernie" Peter Wentis, who was the former golf pro at Marietta Country Club. They were married on Oct. 23, 1948, in Granville. He died on June 16, 1998.
Mrs. Wentis was a member of Marietta Welfare League and Marietta Country Club. She was a breast cancer survivor. She died of a intracerebral hemorrhage, with her sons and daughter at her bedside.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa J. and Donald Wolfcale of Winter Park, Fla.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen M. and Cheryl Wentis of Homestead, Fla., Peter E. and Nona Wentis of Chandler, Ariz., and Andrew D. and Leslie Wentis of Tampa, Fla.; two grandchildren, Alexander David Wentis and Jordyn McKenzie Wentis of Chandler, Ariz.; a brother and sister-in-law, Leonard E. Jr. and Sharon Richardson of Newark; and a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara R. and Rankin Brunton of Marietta.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Hadley Funeral Home, Reno chapel, with the Rev. J. Craig Butler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday one hour prior to services.

Dorothy L. Cole
Died: Thursday, January 2, 2003
Age: 85
PARKERSBURG -- Dorothy L. Cole, 85, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at her residence.
She was born April 11, 1917, in Cincinnati, a daughter of the late Myron Selby and Henrietta Schneider Glazier.
She was a graduate of Ohio University and taught music and special education. She was a great lover of music, literature and art while also enjoying good conversation, animals and time with her family.
She is survived by a son Stanley T. Cole of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Sarah Carpenter of Kenilworth, U.K., Virginia Killian of Parkersburg; two sisters, Sara Metta Roush of Louisville, Ky., and Virginia Eddy of Athens; five grandchildren, Jessica Siefert of Cincinnati, Eric Cole of Hollywood, Fla., and Thomas Carpenter, Edward Carpenter and Annie Carpenter, all of the United Kingdom; a great-granddaughter, Eliza Liberty Siefert, of Cincinnati; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A private memorial celebration will be held at the family's convenience.

Kathleen Ellen Crews
Died: Thursday, January 2, 2003
ATHENS -- Kathleen Ellen Crews died peacefully at Chapel Hill Community in Canal Fulton on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2003.
Kathleen was born in Huntington, W.Va., in 1920 and lived most of her adult life in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls. She has resided in Athens from 1995 until recently.
Kathleen worked as a professional waitress for many decades. Following her semi-retirement in the early 1980s, she worked tirelessly to improve her community as a precinct captain for downtown Akron and organizing for tenants' rights at Mayflower Housing Development. She was honored by Akron Mayor Tom Sawyer for nine years of commitment to social justice with the Senior Citizen of the Year award in 1984.
Kathleen is survived by a sister, Betty Harris of Cuyahoga Falls; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Bridget Crews of Cleveland; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Crews of Canal Fulton; a daughter, Merle Graybill of Athens; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, 24 great-grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews, and many good friends.
The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful people who have taken care of Kathleen during her aging years: Friend and social worker Jerry Schaffer; Heritage Commons staff and friends Alice Curtis, Bill and Bob; Doctors Gaines, Stroh, Messerly, Eland and Clay; and the dedicated staff members of The Lindley Inn and Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
