Sally Jo Stewart Mullins
Died: Friday, January 3, 2003
Age: 55
ATHENS -- Sally Jo Stewart Mullins, 55, of Cottageville, W.Va., departed this life on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, at CAMC Memorial Division, following a brief illness.
Born Aug. 14, 1947, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Joan Gandee Stewart. She was a licensed beautician, a homemaker and served as secretary for the West Virginia Quarter Horse Association for more than 16 years. She attended Flatwoods United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Allen Mullins, and a brother, James Stewart of Mountain Home, Ind.
Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood, W.Va., with the Rev. Gerald B. Sayre officiating. Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Alexander Cemetery, Hebbardsville.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m.
John E. Brown
Died: Tuesday, January 7, 2003
Age: 72
LOGAN -- John E. Brown, 72, of Logan, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in Columbus.
Born March 28, 1930, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Roy and Bertha Hogan Brown. He is survived by sons John and Keith Brown.
Services will be Saturday, 11 a.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 6 to 9 p.m., and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Cloyce R. Martin
Died: Tuesday, January 7, 2003
Age: 64
ATHENS -- Cloyce R. Martin, 64, of Athens, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.
Cloyce was born Aug. 18, 1938, in Athens. He was the son of Mabel M. Wilson Martin of Athens and the late Cloyce G. Martin.
Cloyce lived his whole life in Athens, where he gained much experience in many different occupational fields. As a young man, he worked alongside his father in the family business, Martin Heating & Cooling. He went on to become a licensed electrician and also worked for Ohio University, GTE and the Department of Forestry, and drove a bus for Athens City Schools.
Cloyce was a staff sergeant in the Ohio National Guard for 22 years. In the past, he was an avid hunter and golfer, a member of a bowling league, and enjoyed owning and driving his 1952 Chevy pickup truck.
He attended First Church of God and was a 1956 graduate of Athens High School.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Olivia M. Rardin Martin; a son and daughter-in-law, George P. and Kathy Martin of Daleville, Ala.; a daughter and son-in-law, Debra L. and Michael Doughty of Athens; a brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Marion Martin of Manassas, Va.; three grandchildren, Autumn R. Wallace of Albany, Chris Martin and his wife, Christina, of Daleville, and Kevin Martin of Daleville; and a great-granddaughter, Faith R. Martin of Daleville.
Many other family members and special friends also were a very important part of Cloyce's life.
Services will be conducted Saturday, 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, Athens, by the Rev. William Shepler. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Waterloo Twp., where military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 21 and VFW Post 3477 honor guards.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Ivan P. Maynard
Died: Tuesday, January 7, 2003
Age: 66
ALBANY -- Ivan P. Maynard, 66, of Sugar Grove, N.C., formerly of Albany, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn.
Born Jan. 30, 1936, in Belfy, Ky., he was the son of the late William and Viola Fields Maynard. He was an Army veteran and a mechanic, and was retired from D&D Equipment.
He is survived by two sisters, Suzanne (Gary) Engle of Taylor, S.C., and Paula (Don) Miller of McArthur; nieces and nephews Devry McLaughlin of Zaleski, Derek Scott McLaughlin of Fort Carson, Colo., Tammy Shunk of Elizabeth City, N.C., Tracy Miller of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Stacy Miller of Butler, Tenn.; great-nieces and great-nephews; and two aunts and an uncle.
Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany, with the Rev. Dave Peoples officiating. Burial will be in Radcliff Cemetery.

Beatrice Ellen Smith

MIDDLEPORT -- Beatrice Ellen Smith, 92, of Middleport, died Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003, in Middleport.
Born March 2, 1910, in San Francisco, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Paul and Olympia Fabrie. She is survived by daughters Mary Spires, Pauline Hoffman, Shirley Ann Smith and Bessie Baughman, and a son, Ray Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Fred Smith Sr.
Private services will be held at Riverview Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport.

Born Jan. 10, 1913, in Krebs, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Pietro "Pete" Paulo and Orsola Alica Data.
Services will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Roberts Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Knollwood Cemetery.

Laura Wilcox
Died: Monday, January 6, 2003
Age: 72
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Laura Wilcox, 72, of East Lansing, Mich., died unexpectly Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, in Wyandot Hospital, Upper Sandusky.
A former Athens resident, she was the daughter of the late Professor Amos C. and Harriette Wright Anderson. She is survived by three daughters, Cathy, Carolyn and Mary Ann, and a son, David. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Kenneth Wilcox.
Memorial services were held Saturday in East Lansing, Mich. Information was provided by Jagers and Sons, Athens.
Leon V. Hutchison

CHESHIRE -- Leon V. Hutchison, 90, of Cheshire, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Born May 10, 1912, in Ravenswood, W.Va., he was the son of the late O. Ceryl and Mabel Ford Hutchison.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Congo Hutchison; a daughter, Doris Lee Jeffers; a son, Kenneth C. Hutchison; and stepchildren Shirley Sayre, Terry Congo and Sharon Hart.
Services will be Wednesday a 11 a.m. at Fisher Funeral Home, Middleport, with burial in Ravenswood Cemetery.

Elsie Loper Boyer
Died: Sunday, January 5, 2003
Age: 85
DUNDAS -- Elsie Loper Boyer, 85, formerly of Dundas, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Fairfield Medical Center, Lancaster.
Born Jan. 21, 1917, in Dundas, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Frances Gates Loper. She was employed by Stiffler's in McArthur until 1970, had been a member of Dundas United Methodist Church since 1929 and was a 1935 graduate of McArthur High School.
She is survived by sons Melvin Eugene (Garnet) Boyer of McArthur, John Boyer of Columbus and Charles "Chuck" (Carolyn) Boyer of Hamden; a daughter, Janice Boyer of Groveport; a sister, Esther Beckley of Chillicothe; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin "Pat" Boyer, on April 7, 1961; sisters Lillie Kirkendall and Rose Etta Loper; and brothers Franklin, Gilbert, Theodore, Clarence, George, Everett and Virgil Loper.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. Ferrell Rood officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.

James R. Newhart
Died: Sunday, January 5, 2003
Age: 64
WILKESVILLE -- James R. "Bob" Newhart, 64, of Wilkesville, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003, at Pleasant Valley Hospital, Point Pleasant, W.Va.
Born March 12, 1938, in Wilkesville, he was the son of the late Kyle and Martha Hill Newhart.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen Newhart of Wilkesville; a son, Robert A. Newhart of Wilkesville; three stepsons and two stepdaughters whom he reared, Adam Curry of Nelsonville, Bobby Lambert of Albany, Danny Lambert of Vinton, Abby Curry of Glouster and Birdie Lambert; a brother, Donald Ray Newhart of Georgia; a sister, Judy (Brice) Utt of Wheeling, W.Va.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1 p.m., at McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Vinton, with Pastor Rob Ervin officiating. Burial will be in Vinton Memorial Park.
