Anna G. Shuler
Died: Saturday, March 22, 2003
Age: 63

TUPPERS PLAINS -- Anna G. Shuler, 63, of Tuppers Plains, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.

Born March 13, 1940, in Middleport, she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Rosalee Carr King.

She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Shuler Sr.; and children Richard Alan and Brian E. Shuler.

Services will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., at First Southern Baptist Church in Pomeroy. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church today from 5 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by Ewing Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, P.O. Box 88, Pomeroy, 45769; or First Southern Baptist Church, 41872 Pomeroy Pike, Pomeroy.

Ingrid Chorba
Died: Friday, March 21, 2003

ATHENS -- Ingrid Chorba, born November 10, 1942, in Eisenerz, Austria, passed peacefully at her home with her family at her side after a long illness on Friday, March 21, 2003.

She lived in London, England and Paris, France and studied economics at the University of Saarbruecken in Germany before meeting her husband, Gerald, in a tiny mountain village in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Their oldest daughter, Anuska, was born in Bezier, France in 1974.

Ingrid has lived in Southeast, Ohio since 1977, except for two years in San Diego, Calif. She earned both a bachelor's degree in Environmental Health Science and an master's degree in Botany, from Ohio University, graduating summa cum laude.

She taught at Hocking College in the Recreation and Wildlife Division. She conducted classes in Herbology and Aromatherapy for nine years through the Ohio University Continuing Education Program. She was a community activist belonging to a number of civic/social organizations and was founding member/chairwoman of the SE Ohio Native Plant Society.

Since 1991, she has owned and operated Mt. Nebo Herbs & Oils at 11 W. Union St. in Athens with her husband.

Ingrid is the daughter of Ana and Johann Mayer and the late Karl Glaser. She is survived by her husband Gerald; daughters Anuska and Nadja Chorba; granddaughter Olivia Macy Balaban; son-in-laws Eric Balaban and Kerry Wiese; and sister Helga Asbaghi-Namin of Vienna, Austria.

A memorial service will be held at the Carpenter Inn Conference Center, Carpenter-Dyesville Road, in Carpenter on April 6 from 1 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ingrid's memory may be made to the Ingrid Chorba Memorial Fund, c/o Hocking Valley Bank, Attn. Customer Service, P.O. Box 4847, Athens, OH 45701.

Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home.

Robert V. Altier
Died: Monday, February 10, 2003
Age: 72

CORNING -- Robert V. Altier, 72, of 14368 Route 37, East Corning, died at 12:50 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at his home.

Born Oct. 24, 1930, in Corning, he was a lifetime resident of the area. He was owner of Altier Petroleum in Sayre, a member of the Church of the Atonement in Crooksville and McGahan Council 1065 Knights of Columbus in New Lexington. He was a veteran of the United States Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Garey Altier, of the home; three sons, Randy Altier of Crooksville Route 2, Jeff (Becky) Altier of Junction City and Alan (Teresa) Altier of New Lexington; two daughters, Debbie (Joe) Fabiny of Athens and Tammy (Sam) Hahn of Corning Route 2; a brother, Dusty Altier of New Lexington; three sisters, Margaret Ross of Corning, Rosemary Winnenberg of Columbus and Sister Marie Altier of Niagara, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Mary Marino Altier; and six brothers, John, Leo, Leonard, Pat, Joe and Henry Altier.

Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, 11 a.m., at Church of the Atonement in Crooksville, with Frs. Francis Stanton and Richard Metzger as co-celebrants. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Crooksville, with graveside military rites conducted by American Legion John Tague Post 188 of New Lexington.

Friends may call at Roberts Funeral Home, 304 Mill St., New Lexington, today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., with a wake service at 8.

John E. Snediker
Died: Monday, February 10, 2003
Age: 78

NEW MARSHFIELD -- John E. Snediker, 78, of New Marshfield, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Rocksprings Rehabilitation Center, Pomeroy.

Born April 17, 1924, in Akron, he was the son of the late John E. and Geneva McKey Snediker. He was a World War II Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Julieta, and sons JJ and JC Snediker.

There will be no calling hours or services observed. Arrangements are by Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens.

Clareda Kalklosch
Died: Sunday, February 9, 2003
Age: 77

LOGAN -- Clareda "Billie" Kalklosch, 77, of Logan, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, in Logan.

Born June 6, 1925, in Meigs County, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Clara Alkire Levacy.

Private family services will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Logan.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hocking Valley Community Hospital Foundation, 31480 Chieftain Drive, Suite B, Logan 43138.

Arrangements are by Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home, Logan.

James L. Kennard
Died: Sunday, February 9, 2003
Age: 97

ATHENS -- James L. Kennard, 97, of Athens, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.

Born July 25, 1905, in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Charles and Eva Jane Harbarger Kennard. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Alice C. Carter Kennard. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a son, William L. (Barbara) Kennard of Athens; two grandsons, Alan Kennard of Chicago, Ill., and Todd (Robin) Kennard of Dublin; and two great-granddaughters, Katie and Carrie Kennard of Dublin.

He as preceded in death by a daughter, Alberta Kennard; seven brothers and five sisters.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m., at Asbury Cemetery, with the Rev. Rodney Rogers officiating.

Friends may call at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan, on Wednesday one hour prior to services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church.

George A. Smith
Died: Sunday, February 9, 2003
Age: 84

ATHENS -- After a brief illness, Dr. George A. Smith, 84, died in Johnston-Willis Hospital, Richmond, Va., on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003.

Dr. Smith was born in Springfield. He received his undergraduate degree in anatomy from Ohio State University, his MD from the University of Cincinnati, and did his residency in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. His professional memberships included American Academy of Pediatrics, Clark County Medical Society, American Association of Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Ohio State Medical Association.

His first wife, Suzanne Gerspacher Smith, died in Springfield in 1989. Their children are Richard Kent Smith of Richmond, Ind., Barbara Jo Truitt of Milwaukee, Wis., Christopher Jay Smith of Cincinnati, and Teresa Ann Hupp of Sherodsville; and a niece, Pamela Meyers of Chicago, Ill. He had 14 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Dr. Smith is survived by his wife, Edith Rollins Smith; three stepchildren, Charles Logan Smith III of Richmond, Va., Tracy Wilson Smith of Hanover, N.H., and Porter Smith-Thayer of Richmond, Virginia; and six stepgrandchildren.

Dr. Smith was a member of Springfield Country Club for many years and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Rotary International and The Unitarian Fellowship of Athens. In Richmond, he was a member of Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Glen Allen.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, 3:30 p.m., at Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 11105 Cauthorne Road, with the Rev.Tim Kutzmark presiding.

On March 8, a second memorial service is planned in Springfield at Covenant Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Carol Ann Fleming presiding.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be made to a charity of your choice, or to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Ala. 36104.

Eugene Franklin Taylor Sr.
Died: Sunday, February 9, 2003
Age: 66

LOGAN -- Eugene Franklin "Frank" Taylor Sr., 66, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at University Medical Center, Columbus.

Born Nov. 5, 1936, in Matewan, W.Va., he was the son of the late Oliver Brooks and Irene Mary Justice Taylor. He is survived by his wife, Linda Mitchem Taylor.

Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, with military rites by the Combined Color Guard of Hocking County.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Ohio Valley Affiliate, Box 182039 Dept. 013, Columbus 43218-2039.

Florence Leona Aleshire
Died: Saturday, February 8, 2003
Age: 85

WELLSTON -- Florence Leona Aleshire, 85, of Wellston, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at Adena Medical Center, Chillicothe.

Born April 5, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Nina Canter. She is survived by a daughter, Frances Crabtree. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Aleshire, and a son, Wayne Thomas Canter.

Services will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at J.P. Rogers Funeral Home, Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m.
