Wilma Martin
Died: Wednesday, June 13, 2001

HAYDENVILLE -- Wilma C. Martin, 73, of Haydenville, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 3, 1927, at Powhatan Point, daughter of the late Ellis and Sarah M. Poling Mock. She was married to the late Ralph E. Martin. She worked for the Logan Daily News and was a member of the Logan VFW Women's Auxiliary.

She is survived by a son, David Martin of Haydenville; a daughter, Mindy (Martin) Johnson of Jacksonville; five grandchildren, Chad and Danielle Martin, Jason and Josh Johnson, and Jordan Fleenor; a sister, Dorothy Deconnik of California; a sister-in-law, Betty Caplette of Haydenville; and her best friend and neighbor, Louise Mace of Haydenville.

She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Lester, Raymond and Virgil Mock.

Services will be held Monday, 10 a.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home in Logan, with the Rev. Scott Heskett officiating. Interment will be in New Fairview Cemetery, Rockbridge.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, friends may make contributions to the Shriners or Hospice.

Joyce Thompson
Died: Wednesday, June 13, 2001

NELSONVILLE -- Joyce Ellen Miller Thompson, 39, died June 13, 2001, at Doctors Hospital North, Columbus, after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 13, 1961, in Parkersburg, and was preceded in death by her mother and father, Velma and Leroy Miller of Frost.

She resided in Nelsonville with a partner in life, Homer McWilliams. She is survived by three sisters, Nancy Butcher of Guysville, Sandra Ashcraft of Marietta and Ruth Ann Hart of Little Hocking; a brother, Gary Miller of Athens; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at Rockland Cemetery, Belpre, at a time to be announced.

Crystal Brown
Died: Tuesday, June 12, 2001

ALBANY -- Crystal Ren-ee Brown, 28, of Route 689, Albany, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Rutland.

Born Oct. 3, 1972, in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of Robert F. and Karen L. Matheny Brown of Albany.

She is survived by a daughter, Kyla Taylor; and two sons, Frankie and Jacob Taylor.

Services are Saturday at 11 a.m. at Birchfield Funeral Home in Rutland. Burial will be in Middleport Hill Cemetery in Middleport.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the funeral home for funeral expenses.

Lou Chapman
Died: Tuesday, June 12, 2001

NELSONVILLE -- Funeral service plans have been changed for Lou E. Chapman, 82, of Nelsonville. They will be held Monday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with Pastor Michael Thomas officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, where military graveside services will be performed by the Combined Color Guard Unit.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Chapman passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the Chillicothe Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was born Jan. 11, 1919, in Nelsonville, son of the late Charles and Grace Lett Chapman. He was the widower of Rozella Long Chapman.

Lou was a World War II Army veteran, a union bricklayer and a member of Local 55 in Columbus. He was a member of Masonic Lodge F&AM 55 and VFW Post 289, and was a life member of AMVETS 1776 of Logan.

He is survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews; and his dog, Buddy.

In addition to his wife, Rozella, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lois Chapman; three brothers, Charles, Clinton and Sherril Chapman; and six sisters, Elizabeth Mann, Olga Burroughs, Ruth Berry, Helen Chapman, Charlene Taylor and Edna Cephus.

Michael Dellavalle Jr.
Died: Tuesday, June 12, 2001

RUTLAND -- Michael Beavis/The Kid Dellavalle Jr., 28, of Rutland, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Rutland.

Born July 12, 1972, at Staten Island, N.Y., he was the son of Michael Dellavalle Sr. and Laura Van Pelt Dellavalle.

Services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Birchfield Funeral Home, Rutland. Burial will be at Standish Cemetery, Dexter.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Dr. William Green
Died: Tuesday, June 12, 2001

LOGAN -- Dr. William J. Green, 75, of Rockbridge, formerly of Delaware, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at his residence.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1925, in Hancock County, son of the late Wesley Roy and Nell Scoles Green.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Harter Green of Rockbridge.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, 4 p.m., at his Rockbridge residence, followed by a potluck dinner for family and friends.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice or a charity of choice.

Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Home in Logan.

Charles Montgomery
Died: Tuesday, June 12, 2001

STEWART -- Charles Chuck Montgomery, 56, of Stewart, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Kimes Convalescent Center in Athens.

Born Feb. 21, 1945, in Westerville, he retired from Jet Painting in Glouster.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon K. Montgomery of Stewart; his mother, Mary E. Reid of Millfield; three sons, Joe (Amy) Troiano and Jim (Candice) Troiano of Glouster, and Randy Montgomery of Lucasville; a daughter, Teresa (Herb) McCloud of Jacksonville; five grandchildren; four brothers, Fred (Linda) Montgomery of London, Ohio, Will Montgomery of Blacklick, John (Connie) Montgomery of Westerville, and Butch (Sharon) Montgomery of Millfield; four sisters, Mary (Herb) Brown of Athens, Carol Crihfield and Dave Smith of Millfield, Esther (Rod) Lamp of St. Mary's W.Va., and Donna (Doug) Graham of Virginia; brothers-in-law David and Donzel Matheny; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Sam) Douglas, Laura (Earley) Hill, and Vanita (Kenny) Casto; his mother-in-law, Donna Matheny; special friends Butch Montgomery, and Chuck and Anita Matheny; an uncle, Bill Glenn; several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hugh E. Montgomery; his stepfather, Bill Reid; two brothers, Ted and Jack Montgomery; a nephew, Scott Jackson; and his father-in-law, Donzel Matheny.

Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with Pastor Tom Redman officiating. Interment will be in Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, 5 to 8 p.m.

Sally Navin
Died: Tuesday, June 12, 2001

ATHENS -- Sally Louise Price Navin passed away on June 12, 2001, at her home in Norfolk, Va., of cancer.

She was born June 7, 1938, in Marysville. A lifelong educator and traveler, Dr. Navin graduated from Marysville High School in 1956 and earned a Ph.D. in guidance and counseling from Ohio State University in 1968. She joined the faculty of Ohio University in Athens shortly thereafter and began a distinguished career in higher education. Her areas of interest included assertiveness training, counseling children, HIV counseling, human sexuality, counseling ethics, counseling disabled adults and international counseling.

It was the latter subject that brought her the greatest personal and professional satisfaction. In 1982, she joined the Ohio University USAID project in Botswana, where she introduced guidance and counseling concepts to local teachers. She returned to Botswana in 1985 to work with the government Ministry of Education, and again in 1988 when she was awarded a Fulbright lecture grant. Additional projects brought her back to the region many times in the 1990s.

In addition to her work in southern Africa, Dr. Navin lectured widely throughout the world and spent a year in Ankara, Turkey, in 1996-97 as a member of the World Bank/Turkish Higher Education Council project.

Professional honors included the Ohio Counseling Association Past Presidents Award in 1992, and the Ohio Mental Health Counselors Researcher of the Year Award in 1994. Dr. Navin retired from OU as a full professor in 1998.

Prior to her retirement, Dr. Navin was active at Christ Lutheran Church in Athens, where she served on the Campus Ministry Committee. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Norfolk at the time of her death.

She is survived by her brother, James W. Price of Chandler, Ariz.; her nephew, James E. Price of Los Angeles, Calif.; and her niece, Amy Heneghan of Lahaina, Hawaii.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 15, at 2 p.m., at Christ Lutheran Church, 69 Mill St., Athens. For information, call 593-3144.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 6340 Center Drive, York Building Suite 129, Norfolk, Va., 23502; or the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va., 23518.

Shirley J. Vamos
Died: Wednesday, February 19, 2003
Age: 62

ATHENS -- Shirley J. Vamos, 62, of Portsmouth, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 19, 2003, in Portsmouth.

Born Dec. 17, 1940, in Millfield, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Sylvia Showalter McCune. She was a homemaker and a member of The Plains VFW auxiliary.

She is survived by four daughters, Tammy (Tim) DeBell of Felicity, Bridgette Ayers of Clarksville, Tenn., Paula Vamos of Portsmouth and Tracy (Todd) Madden of Wheelersburg; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; six sisters, Vera Leasure of Fort Mill, S.C., Nancy Smoke of Reynoldsburg, Dixie Misner of The Plains, Patsy McPherson of Athens, and Debbie McCune and Becky Gollowway, both of Cloverdale, Ind.; three brothers, Tim McCune of Wilkesville, Jimmy McCune of The Plains and Mike McCune of Athens and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul B. Vamos Jr.; a grandson, Shane Lansing; a sister, Betty McGuire; and a brother, Terry McCune.

Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from noon until the time of service.
