Agnes Widner
Died: Tuesday, April 2, 2002
REEDSVILLE -- Agnes P. Widner, 84, of Reedsville, died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at her residence.
Born June 8, 1917, in Barlow, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Connie Ogg VanDyke.
She is survived by a son, Bernard Bobo of Reedsville; two daughters, Carolyn Willison of Columbus and Virginia King of Guysville; a sister, Elizabeth Moore of Kentucky; and several grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; and two brothers, Lee and Wells.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Clarks Chapel Cemetery in Athens County.
Friends may call at White-Moquin Funeral Home in Coolville on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Robert Detwiler
Died: Monday, April 1, 2002
McARTHUR -- Robert Detwiler died Monday morning, April 1, 2002.
Bob was born Nov. 17, 1932, in Roaring Springs, Pa. He was the son of Sheridan and Mary Detwiler. Bob was a 25-year resident of Vinton County, an Army veteran who served with the occupation forces in Germany 1950-53, and a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mr. Detwiler spent the bulk of his professional life working for the Central Intelligence Agency. Bob was a photographic specialist who worked on the development of the U-2 aircraft and the interpretation of its photos during the 1950s, in both Washington, D.C., and Nevada. Bob served the agency in several capacities in overseas duty in Panama, Brazil, and combat-related duties in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. He returned to Washington for the remainder of his agency career.
Upon his retirement, Bob and his family moved to Vinton County. He was an instructor in the police science programs at Hocking College for six years. He was a farmer and a candidate for several county and state political offices. He was a member of St. Sylvester Parish in Zaleski.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; a daughter, Bernadette Swart; a son-in-law, Rob Swart; grandchildren Austin, Noah, Tanner and Chase Swart; a son, Joseph Detwiler; a daughter-in-law, Kim Clark; grandchildren Dominic and Natalie Detwiler; a daughter, Debbie Getz; a son-in-law, Kevin Getz; grandchildren Elizabeth, Thomas and Katherine Getz; and his brother, Jack Detwiler, and family.
Burial services with military honors were held today in Dayton National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
A Memorial Mass will be held Friday at Church of the Nativity in Utica, with Fr. Steven Metzger presiding.
Pauline Pond
Died: Monday, April 1, 2002
CANAL WINCHESTER -- Pauline Pond, 81, of Canal Winchester, was called to begin her heavenly duties on Monday, April 1, 2002 at Winchester Place Rehabilitation Center in Canal Winchester.
Survivors include her faithful husband of 59 years, Howard; loving son Rick (Pat); precious grandchildren Chad (Stephanie) Pond and Jenny (Joshua) Forrest; and most precious great-granddaughter, Madison Noel Pond. Other family members include sister Helen (Dwight) Scott of Canal Winchester; sister-in-law Hester Creed Rose of Lancaster; and brothers Carl (Wanda) Rose of Athens, Ray Rose of Athens, Tommy (Mary) Rose of Stuart, Fla., Harry (Ruth) Rose of The Plains, and Dick Rose of Lancaster. Parents Frank and Edna Rose of Athens, brother Marion Rose of Lancaster, and sisters-in-law Delores Rose of Athens and Susan Rose of Lancaster predeceased her.
Born on May 18, 1921, Pauline graduated from Rome-Cannan High School in Athens County. She worked at the Athens State Hospital, was married on Dec. 25, 1942, supported her husband during his military years in World War II and moved into the Williamsport, Ohio, area in 1949. She worked at General Electric, Orient State Hospital and the Pickaway County Clerk of Courts Office until 25 years ago when her time was spent cooking, cleaning, working in the yard, and providing love and care for pets Lucky, Toby, Adam and Alex. She was a member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church, Sorosis Club and Eastern Star. Her love of home was overshadowed only by the love she shared and provided for her family, especially grandchildren Chad and Jenny, with whom she shared a special relationship.
There will be no calling hours. Kirkpatrick Funeral Home of Washington Court House, at the discretion of the family, will make arrangements. She will rest eternally on a hillside overlooking the Hocking River where memories will be near to her.
The family would ask that to honor her memory a contribution be made to Mount Carmel Hospice, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
Ralph Clark
Died: Saturday, March 30, 2002
WELLSTON -- Ralph R. Clark, 82, of Wellston, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Huston Nursing Home in Hamden.
Born April 8, 1919, in Wellston, he was the son of the late Neal and Stella Martin Clark. Ralph was a 1937 graduate of Wellston High School and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a former employee of the state of Ohio and a former mayor of the city of Wellston. He was a member of American Legion Post 371 of Wellston and a former member of the Eagles Lodge.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Dowlene Morgan of Thurman, Gary Border, Mike Alexander and Virgene Jayjohn, all of Wellston; a special niece and nephew, Sue and Bob Rose of Wellston; a brother-in-law, Dow Border of Wellston; a special cousin, Dick Martin of Wellston; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hudson Clark; and two sisters, Audrey Louise "Tootie" Alexander and Lottie Border.
Services will be held Tuesday, 11 a.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by American Legion Post 371 of Wellston.

Noah Chasteen Jr.
Died: Friday, March 29, 2002
MIDDLEPORT -- Noah Chasteen Jr., 79, of Middleport, died Friday, March 29, 2002, at Middleport.
Born June 29, 1922, in Vinton, he was the son of the late Noah Sr. and Mattie Gadd Chasteen.
He is survived by his wife, Leafy Graham Chasteen; and sons Nolan, Gary, Greg and Marty.
Funeral services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Rutland Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Miles Cemetery.

Patricia Canter
Died: Thursday, March 28, 2002
THE PLAINS -- Patricia Ann Canter, 73, of The Plains, died early Thursday morning, March 28, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center.
Born March 6, 1929, in Circleville, she was the daughter of the late Earlie and Emma Margaret Shea Canter. She was formerly a cook for Westfalls and Hilltop Restaurant.
She is survived by a son, Rodney (Tia) Canter of Athens; seven grandchildren; sisters Ruth Bricker and Charlene Hanning, both of The Plains; and a brother, Jack (Rita) Canter of Athens.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tiffany Nicole Canter; and a brother, Richard Canter.
Services will be held Saturday, 3 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens, with Pastor William Shepler officiating. Burial will be in Hilltop Cemetery.

RACINE -- Audrey Belle Ours, 87, of Racine, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the home of a daughter in Racine.
Born May 12, 1914, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of the late George and Lena Wray Neville.
She is survived by daughters Nancy Pedigo, Violet Preston and Karen Willson; and sons Harry and William Ours.
Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home in Racine. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.

LOGAN -- Robert E. Michel, 65, of Logan, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in Chester, S.C.
Born July 27, 1936, in Hocking County, he was the son of the late Elmer E. and Hazel L. Harble Michel.
Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Logan. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Logan, with military graveside services conducted by the Combined Veterans of Hocking County.

POMEROY -- Carole Hamm Crujeiras, 62, of 6428 Faircrest Road, Columbus, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville.
Born Aug. 3, 1939, in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late Walter T. and Lena Hines Hamm.

Nellie McQuaid
Died: Sunday, March 24, 2002
LOGAN -- Nellie Mae McQuaid, 75, of Logan, passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Logan Health Care Center.
Born Jan. 31, 1927, in Logan, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Franklin and Florence Evelyn Starr Pierson. She was a member of Moose Lodge 873 and the auxiliaries of VFW Post 6430, Fraternal Order of Eagles 2768 and AMVETS 1776.
She is survived by a son, Paul Ray Campbell of Logan; two daughters, Pamela (Ralph) Chaffin of Logan, and Evelyn Faye (Bob) Lafferty of Newark; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Edward Campbell; her second husband, Eldon McQuaid; and an infant son, Eddie Lee Campbell.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 10 a.m., at Oak Grove Cemetery in Logan, with the Rev. Harold Kellenbarger officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are by Cardaras Funeral Home in Logan.
