Died: Friday, June 14, 2002
MCARTHUR -- Leonetta A. Penrod Tewksbury, 85, of McArthur, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 20, 1916, in Elk Twp., Vinton County, she was the daughter of the late Howard Jerome and Grace Rosser Penrod. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlan Tewksbury.
Services will be held today at 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur. Burial will be in Putnam Chapel Cemetery.
Ronald Estep
Died: Wednesday, June 12, 2002
ATHENS -- Ronald Estep Sr., 66, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Indianapolis.
He retired in 2001 as a foreman for Intercare Corp., with 13 years of service. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Cooper Estep; daughters, Blondel Zimmerman of Athens, Rhonda Pahlman and Regina Winland; sons, Ronald Estep Jr. and Neil Estep; a stepdaughter, Andrea Campoli; a sister, Norma Polley; a brother, Clarence Estep; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
There will be no services or calling hours. Stevens Mortuary in Indianapolis is in charge of arrangements.
Roger Harris
Died: Wednesday, June 12, 2002
ATHENS -- Roger David Harris, 49, of Clarksville, Tenn., formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., as the result of injuries received in a motorcycle accident.
Born Sept. 10, 1952, in Athens, he was the son of Barbara Gooding Harris of Athens and the late Vance Harris. He was a 1970 graduate of Athens High School, a member of Hilldale Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and was employed as a commercial business materials leader for Trane Co.
Besides his mother, he is survived by his wife, Vennie Evans; a son, John A. Harris of Clarksville; a daughter, Amy N. Harris of Cincinnati; brothers, Terry (Betty) Harris of Rootstown and Greg (Teresa) Harris of Athens; a niece, a nephew; and his maternal grandmother, Marguerite Gooding.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by an infant sister.
Services will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., at McReynolds-Nave and Larson Chapel, 1209 Madison St., Clarksville, Tenn., with the Rev. Verlon Moore officiating. Burial will be in Wickham Cemetery, Palmyra, Tenn.
Pall bearers will be Chris Bagby, Mort Paisley, Ted Lewis, Kenny Evans, Miles Hayes and Mike Amabile.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m., and on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

Paul Fields
Died: Tuesday, June 11, 2002
NELSONVILLE -- Paul Denver Fields, 63, of Lancaster, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002.
Born Sept. 19, 1938, in Athens County, he was the son of the late Rev. Troy and Teresa Fields.
He is survived by a special niece, Cherie (Rusty) Sharp of Pickerington; sisters, M. Irene (Jerry) Hoy of Logan, Ruth (Don) Higgins of Huntington Park, Calif., Ann Arment of Nelsonville, Mona (Virgil) Spears of Tucson, Ariz., and Rita (Bill) Spring of Nelsonville; and numerous additional nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rex Fields.
A family memorial service was held at 10 a.m. today at Warren-Brown Funeral Home in Nelsonville.

Robert Wren
Died: Tuesday, June 11, 2002
ATHENS -- Robert Michael Wren, 81, of Athens, died early Tuesday morning, June 11, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.
Born Nov. 9, 1920, in Cleveland, he was the son of the late Frank Joseph and Florence SweenyWren. Wren served as Ohio University baseball coach for 24 years and was an OU employee for 42 years. He was a graduate of Cleveland East High School and a 1943 graduate of OU with a bachelor of science degree in education.
He started his teaching and coaching career at Maumee High School, where he taught history and coached football and basketball. Following six years as a professional baseball player in the St. Louis Browns organization, Coach Wren returned to Athens in 1948 to teach and coach at Athens High School. In 1949, he was named head baseball coach at his alma mater. In his 24 seasons of coach of the Bobcats, his teams won 11 Mid-American Conference titles; they never had a losing season, and he stands as the Bobcats' all-time winningest coach with a 464-160 record.
Coach Wren worked in professional baseball with the Phillies, Reds, Pirates and Yankees. He has been inducted into five Halls of Fame, including the NCAA College Baseball Coaches and Ohio University Athletic, and was a charter member of the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame. During his years at OU, he served as an assistant coach in football and basketball, an assistant to the dean of men, an assistant athletic director and an admission's counselor and recruiter.
Wren retired from the university in 1992. He was a member of Athens Elks, OU Green and White Club, Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, United States Army Reserves, Order of Symposiarch, Hocking Valley Sportsman Association, The Ruffed Grouse Society and The National Wild Turkey Federation. Wren was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, who passed these loves on to his children and grandchildren.
Wren is survived by his college sweetheart and wife of 59 years, Lois J. Hall Wren; daughters Susan (Larry) Adams of Fort Worth, Texas, and Karen (Dennis) Standsfield of Athens; a son, R. Michael (Lana) Wren of Athens; grandchildren Rachael (David) Lupia of Oldsmar, Fla., Rebecca (James) Grady of Largo, Fla., Brooke Batchelor of Fort Worth, Texas, and Tyler Wren and Jared Wren, both of Athens; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Lupia and Gabriel Lupia of Oldsmar; a sister, Betty Wren of Cleveland; sisters-in-law Jean Brooks of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., Helen Young of Coshocton, Sarah Hull of Fort Myers, Fla., and Wanda Hull of Athens; a brother-in-law, William (Gloria) Hull of Dublin, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
He also is survived by many special friends, former students, coaches and athletes who were touched by his presence.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Donna Jean.
A public memorial service will be held Friday, 4 p.m., at Bob Wren Stadium, with a reception to follow at the stadium.

Anna Herron
Died: Monday, June 10, 2002
McARTHUR -- Anna Murphy Herron, 81, of McArthur, died Monday, June 10, 2002, at Huston Nursing Home, Hamden.
Born June 3, 1921, in New Straitsville, she was the daughter of the late Frank M. and Elsie McNeal Murphy Sr. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William Herron; a son, John Coffman (Linda Sherrick) of McArthur; a daughter, Janet Trout of Zanesville; six grandchildren; a brother, Frank (Marian) Murphy Jr. of McArthur; and sisters Garnet (Eugene) Engle of McArthur, Mary (Roger) Morgan of Athens and Helen (Don) Eversberg of Zanesville.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Coffman, and a brother, John "Jack" Murphy.
Services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. Roger Hauck officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday one hour prior to services.
Bernadine Main
Died: Monday, January 28, 2002
ATHENS -- Mary Bernadine Main, 86, of Friendship Village in Dublin, a former resident of Athens and a descendant of one of the first pioneer families of Athens County, died late Monday afternoon, Jan. 28, 2002, at Friendship Village.
Born Aug. 20, 1915, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Dr. John R. and Anna Bernadine Devlin Sprague. A 1933 graduate of Athens High School, she was a graduate of Ohio University with a degree in medical technology. Early in life, she was a substitute high school teacher. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Child Conservancy League, Athens Foundation, Athens Garden Club, Chi Omega sorority, Catholic Ladies of Columbia, Athens County Historical Society and the Equal Rights Commission.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Robert Main; daughters Linda (Pete) Clark of Albany and Theresa (Al) Walton of New Plymouth; sons Robert J. (Bette Ann) Main of Marion, N.C., Dr. Tom (Leslie) Main of Columbus, and Bill (Kathleen) Main of LaJolla, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and brothers Dr. Edward (Jean) Sprague of Athens, Dr. William (Norma) Sprague of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Robert Sprague of Charleston, S.C.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. John T. Sprague.
Funeral Mass will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at St. Paul Catholic Church in Athens, with Msgr. Patrick Gaughan officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home in Athens on Thursday, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., where Catholic Ladies of Columbia will hold memorial rites at 7:15 and a vigil for the deceased will be held at 7:30.

Clarice McCall
Died: Monday, January 28, 2002
MURRAY CITY -- Clarice June McCall, 70, of Murray City, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born June 26, 1931, in Orbiston, she was the daughter of the late Vance and Clara Huffman Glancy.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert McCall Sr.; sons Robert (Linda) McCall Jr. of New Plymouth and Charles (Mary) McCall of Logan; grandchildren Joe Miller, Tommy (Autumn) Miller, Anette McCall and Shane Kline, all of Logan, Thomas and Clarice McCall of New Plymouth; a great-grandchild, Chase Miller of Logan; a brother, Victor (Marylin) Glancy of Columbus; and a sister, Mrs. Clyde (Kathryn) Largent of Logan.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Richard, Eugene and Dean Glancy; and sisters Thelma Fuller, Grace Wallace and Hazel Glancy.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in Nelsonville.
No calling hours will be observed.

Charles Hughes
Died: Sunday, January 27, 2002
ATHENS -- Charles Newton Hughes, 74, of Athens, died Sunday morning, Jan. 27, 2002, at Arcadia Acres, Logan.
Born Dec. 10, 1927, in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Wesley and Blanche Briley Hughes.
He is survived by three sisters, Janey and Mabel Hughes of Athens, and Dorothy (Dale) Sprague of Columbus; a niece, Joyce (David) Rawson of Columbus; a nephew, Bruce Sprague of Seattle, Wash.; and two great-nephews, Kenneth and Benjamin Rawson.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Hughes; and three brothers, George, Clifford and Marvin Hughes.
Services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens. Burial will be in West Union Street Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service.
