Winnie Higgins
Died: Sunday, September 16, 2001
GLOUSTER -- Winnie B. Higgins passed into the hands of our Lord peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001.
She was born at home in Corning on Dec. 15, and was the last surviving child of Jakob Bowen and Anna Refinati Bowen. She was preceded in death by sisters, Velma Alfman, Frances Spencer and Louise McCullough; and a brother, David Bowen.
Winnie married John Karkus in 1930. They have a daughter, Ann Karkus Bechtold. John was killed in a coal mining accident in 1941. She also bought her house at 23 New Street in Glouster in 1941.
Winnie heard the call to serve her country in World War II. She and Ann went to Detroit, where she attended government school and became a riveter. She worked 10-hour days, even on Sundays, building B-29 airplanes. After the war, she returned to Glouster, where she met and married Rolland E. Higgins. He was a decorated serviceman in World War II. Rolland was secretary-treasurer for UMWA Local 1340. He preceded her in death in November 1974. They have a son, Rolland E. Higgins.
Winnie was a member of UMWA Local 1340, Glouster FOE 468 Auxiliary and Glouster Church of Christ, and was an active member of Glouster and Athens Senior Citizens. In her later years, she made her home with her daughter, Ann.
Winnie leaves behind four generations: a daughter, Ann; grandchildren, Carol Ann and Butch; great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, John, Amanda, Mark, Kristina, Jakob and Hollie; great-great-grandchildren, Cecilia, Gavin, Kacey, Christopher and Naomi; a son, Rolland Higgins of Virginia; grandchildren, Gilbert of Delphos, Brian and Jonathan; and several nieces and nephews.
Winnie loved everybody and was loved by everyone. She said she had never met a stranger. We will miss her.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 1 p.m., at Cardaras Funeral Home, Glouster, with Don Seevers officiating. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Glouster.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Floyd Barber
Died: Saturday, September 15, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Floyd Barber, 78, of Beavercreek, formerly of Nelsonville, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Hospice of Dayton.
He was born May 8, 1923, in Athens County, son of the late Leslie and Inez V. Evans Barber. He was married to Rhea Evans Barber of Beavercreek. He was retired from AEP and was a World War II veteran. He was a graduate of Nelsonville High School.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael C. and Carrol Barber of Bellbrook and Richard E. and Beverly Barber of Xenia; and a granddaughter, Amanda M. Barber of Bellbrook. He was preceded in death by a brother, William L. Barber, and a niece, Patricia Deeds.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery, where the Combined Color Guard Unit will perform military graveside services.
Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Doris Brammer
Died: Saturday, September 15, 2001
NELSONVILLE -- Doris Marie Larch Brammer, 75, of Nelsonville, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her residence.
Born July 31, 1926, in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Mary Lucille Drake Larch Buhrman and the late Harry Larch.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Julia and Dale Stanley of Albany; a sister, Jean Henry of Chicago; a brother, Elwood Larch of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Mary and Bob Guess of Nelsonville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Brammer.
Mrs. Brammer requested cremation with no calling hours. Graveside services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at Hilltop Cemetery, Millfield, with the Rev. James R. Mathias officiating. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home.
Victor Clark
Died: Saturday, September 15, 2001
COOLVILLE -- Victor W. Clark, 80, of Coolville, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg, W.Va.
He was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Coolville, son of the late Minnie Ester Welling Clark. He was a graduate of Troy High School, a veteran of World War II, a charter member of Coolville Volunteer Fire Department, a leader of Coolville Boy Scout Troop 76, and a lifetime member of Coolville Lions Club and VFW Post 3478 of Coolville. He retired from Union Carbide after 27 years, was a former member of American Legion Post 15 of Parkersburg and Carthage-Troy School Board, and a member of Grace Brethren Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Lee Shanks Clark; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Donna Clark of Coolville, Victor W. and Kris Clark of Angela, Ind., Fred and Judy Clark of Guysville; three sisters, Marguerite Burdette of Coolville, Betty Lou West of Albany, and Eva Leeth of Coolville; a brother- and sister-in-law, Dick and Alice Shanks of Coolville; and five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Tuesday, 1 p.m., at White-Moquin Funeral Home in Coolville, with the Revs. George Horner and Craig Holler officiating. Burial and military graveside services will be held in Coolville Cemetery.

Gertrude Bass
Died: Friday, September 14, 2001
POMEROY -- Gertrude Eva Bass, 85, of Pomeroy, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis.
Born April 3, 1916, in Pomeroy, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Daisy Smith Ruschel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Bass. She is survived by children Eleanor Lawson, Jean Young and Carolyn Bissell.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Home, Pomeroy, with burial in Beech Grove Cemetery.
Calling hours will be observed Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Grace Cain
Died: Friday, September 14, 2001
STOCKPORT -- Grace Marie Scott Cain, 79, of Stockport, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001 at her residence.
Born Dec. 1, 1921 in Stockport, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Hazel Remy Scott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen W. Cain. She is survived by a son, Ronald Cain, and a daughter, Janet Kincaid.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Stone Matheny Funeral Home, Chesterhill. Burial will be in Lightner Ridge Cemetery, Stockport.
Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
John Kurtzman
Died: Friday, September 14, 2001
GLOUSTER -- John E. Kurtzman, 72, of Venice, Fla., died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001.
He was born Jan. 9, 1929, in Glouster. Mr. Kurtzman moved to Florida 10 years ago from Columbus. He was a retired electrician, a member of the Moose, Elks and American Legion in Columbus and Venice, and was an Army veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; daughters Denise Kurtzman of Los Angeles, Diane Frazier of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Jackie Bailey of Columbus; and seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Opal Basim
Died: Thursday, September 13, 2001
LONG BOTTOM -- Opal Marie Basim, 74, of Long Bottom, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Arcadia Nursing Center, Coolville.
Born Nov. 10, 1926, in Coolville, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Edith Wyers. She attended Gospel Baptist Church in Torch.
She is survived by a son, Paul Basim of Long Bottom; a son and daughter-in-law, George and Debbie Basim of Reedsville; a daughter, Patty Basim of Broadwell; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Gary Molahan of Ironton, Donna and James Rupe of Reedsville, Bonnie and Ed Batton of Reedsville and Nola and Russell Williams of Spring Valley, W.Va.; brothers Jack, Ronnie and Robert Wyers, all of Ravenna, and Raymond Wyers of Cambridge; sisters Doris Bowman of Elizabeth, W.Va., and Betty Lou Wyers of Canton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Basim; children Marlene Basim Lantz, Martha Buchanan and Bertha Ann Basim; and a sister, Donna Jean Wyers.
Services will be Monday, 11 a.m., at White-Moquin Funeral Home, Coolville, with Pastor Jay Hubbard officiating. Burial will be in Meigs County Memory Gardens.

Thad L. Thanthorey
Died: Friday, February 14, 2003
Age: 73
HOCKINGPORT -- Thad L. Tanthorey, 73, of Hockingport, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 10, 1929, in Parkersburg, W.Va., son of the late Virginia Tanthorey Sams. He was retired from GE Plastics as an operator and painter, and attended Vanderhoof Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Donna Lou Tanthorey; two daughters and sons-in-law, Leisa and Richard Gillian of Coolville and Teresa and Jack Fought of Hockingport; a son, Keith Tanthorey of Hockingport; six grandchildren, Cassie, Stacy and Abby Gillian, Erin Tanthorey and Amy and Derek Fought; a brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Lynn Sams of Burk, Va.; a sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Davis Sisson of Canton; two brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jim and Judy Brown of Guysville and Eldon and Keron Brown of Little Hocking; several nieces and nephews and many friends; two grandsons-in-law-to-be, Charlie Davis of Hockingport and Jamie Null of Coolville.
Besides his mother, Virginia, he was preceded in death by a sister and a brother-in-law, Dolores and Stub Wilfong.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville, with the Rev. Dave Cogar officiating. Burial will be in Coolville Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the funeral home for funeral expenses.
