Floyd Mitchell
Died: Monday, February 4, 2002
McARTHUR -- Floyd J. Mitchell, 81, of McArthur, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens.
Born April 19, 1920, in Elk Twp., Vinton County, he was the son of the late Claude and Nettie Dowell Mitchell. He had retired from Austin Powder Co. after 28 years of service. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Vinton County VFW Post 5299.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Nickels Mitchell; seven daughters, Mary (Darrell) Young and Charlotte (Daniel) Bauman of Shade, Bessie Irvin of Springfield, Joan (Bill) Roe of Jackson, Betty (Bill) Humphrey of Logan, Virginia Lafferty of McArthur and Marilyn Azbell of Hamden; five sons, Emmett (Marsha) Mitchell of Sonora, Richard Mitchell of McArthur, Jerry (Lynn) Mitchell and Paul (Bonnie) Mitchell of Logan, and Jack Mitchell of Chillicothe; 40 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Webb of Xenia; and brothers Emmett Mitchell of Hamden and Stanley Mitchell of Creola.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roy Dean Mitchell; a brother, Paul Mitchell; sisters Ida May Mitchell, Mary Jane Clemons, Sally Amerine, Bertha Peoples and Della Storms; a granddaughter, Nicole Gee; and a grandson, Matthew Mitchell.
Services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at Garrett Funeral Home in McArthur, with the Rev. David Peoples officiating. Burial will be in Elk Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by Vinton County VFW Post 5299.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Marjorie Patterson
Died: Monday, February 4, 2002
WELLSTON -- Marjorie E. Patterson, 82, of Dayton, a former resident of Wellston, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Wright Nursing and Rehabilitation in Fairborn.
Born July 14, 1919, in Wellston, she was the daughter of the late William and Anna Florence Thomas. She retired in 1976 from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where she was a secretary. Marjorie loved her family, camping, fishing, sewing, reading, traveling and making Christmas cookies.
She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Semons, and husband, Craig E., of Fremont, Ind.; a son, James Patterson Jr., and wife Sharon of Dayton; grandchildren James Patterson III and Joanna Patterson; a sister, Helen Witherall and husband James of Athens; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Patterson, in 1996.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston. Burial will be in Ridgewood Cemetery.

Effie Powell
Died: Thursday, January 31, 2002
GLOUSTER -- Effie Fontell Powell, 77, of Glouster, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains.
Born in Greens Run on Feb. 23, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Merill Coey and Elizabeth McClelland Coey. She retired after 30 years of service from Ohio University. She was a member of the Bishopville United Methodist Church and a graduate of Greens Run High School.
She is survived by her sons, James Powell and special friend Betsy Mitchell of Murray City, Ronnie Powell and special friend Jackie Greenlees of Greens Run, and Larry Powell of Glouster; daughters Mrs. Mark (Marsha) Stauffer of New Marshfield and Mrs. Nelson (Patsy) Brownell of Glouster; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Olimpia Powell of Buchtel; a nephew that was raised in the home, Randy (Sue) Russell of Marion; two former sons-in-law, Don Stanley and Pat Hanson, both of Glouster; and a sister, Maxine Lanning of Brewster.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Powell; a grandson, Jason Hanson; brothers Addison and Butch Coey; and a sister, Goldie Russell.
Services will be Monday, 1 p.m., at Brown Funeral Home with Pastor John Wright officiating. Burial will be at Taylor Ridge Cemetery.

Dorotha Spence
Died: Wednesday, March 13, 2002
CARBON HILL -- Dorotha Fay Spence, 94, of Carbon Hill, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at her residence.
Born July 21, 1907, in Carbon Hill, she was the daughter of the late John and Cannie Belle Sweazy Devol. She was the widow of Johnie Spence. She retired from Bargain House in Logan, was a member of Carbon Hill United Methodist Church, Methodist Women's Club and the former Carbon Hill Senior Citizens.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Hoskins of Nelsonville, and Nancy (Frank) Kurtz of Columbus; four grandchildren, Bill Harris of Sunbury, Frank Kurtz, Kevin Kurtz and Kristin Retherford, all of Columbus; four great-grandchildren, Heather Bishoff, Courtney Bearss, Tyler Stupalsky and Christopher Harris; seven great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, David Devol of Logan, Bob Devol of Lancaster and Dannie Devol of Logan; and three sisters, Adrienne Blake of Logan, Velma Jones of Lancaster and Mary Barnhart of Lancaster.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Clinton Spence Hoskins; four brothers, Phil, John, Anthony and Donald Devol; an infant sister, Thelma Devol; and a son-in-law, Richard Hoskins.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home in Nelsonville, with the Rev. Richard Bennington officiating. Interment will be in Carbon Hill Cemetery.

Elmer Spencer
Died: Wednesday, March 13, 2002
MURRAY CITY -- Elmer "Pants" Spencer, 78, of Murray City, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born June 29, 1923, in Murray City, he was the son of the late Dwight and Florence Koon Spencer. He was a World War II Army veteran and a retired construction superintendent for Carlile Construction.
He is survived by his wife, Desdamona L. "Desda" Durian Spencer, whom he married on March 1, 1943; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Susan Spencer of Murray City; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Richard Doritty of Sunbury; brothers Richard Spencer of Lancaster and Kenneth Spencer of Tuppers Plains; and a sister, Nellie Garner of Louisville, N.C.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Junior Spencer and Art Spencer.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, 2:30 p.m., at Greenlawn Cemetery in Nelsonville.
No calling hours will be observed.

Richard Disbennet

LOGAN -- Richard Summerfield Disbennett, 85, of Logan, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in Logan.
Born Sept. 16, 2002, he was the son of the late Frank and Jane Helber Disbennett.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Heinlein-Brown Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hocking County, with graveside military services conducted by the Combined Veterans Organization.

Elizabeth Feth
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002
ATHENS -- Elizabeth Feth, 91, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Athens, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, in Houston.
Born Sept. 5, 1910, in Glouster, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Rosetta Eberts Champlin. She was a former nurse for Sheltering Arms Hospital and Athens Mental Health Center. She and her husband, George, were former owners of Elm Golf Course.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley (Tom) Lipsey of Houston; five grandchildren, David (Joann) Lipsey, Lana Lipsey, Carole Lipsey, Sheree Walther and Lisa Boren; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews, including Verda (John) Jones of Athens.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Gray Walther; and several brothers and sisters.
Graveside services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at Alexander Cemetery, with the Rev. Mary Jo Yeakel officiating.
No calling hours will be observed.

James Larabee
Died: Tuesday, March 12, 2002
ZALESKI -- James Clifford Larabee, 80, of Nitro, W.Va., died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at his home.
A former resident of Dunbar, W.Va., and Zaleski, Mr. Larabee retired from LTV Steel Co. and was a member of Zaleski Baptist Church.
He is survived by daughters Yonna Larabee of Rohnert Park, Calif., and Delores Morris of Warren, W.Va.; sisters Ruth Shamblin of Nitro and Josephine Wright of Hurricane, W.Va.; brothers Holley Larabee of Tyler Mountain, W.Va., and Dempsy Larabee of Nitro; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m., at Barnett Chapel, with Pastor Joe Scarberry officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

RACINE -- Mary Virginia Bentz Hendricks, 77, of Pickens Street, Racine, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at Overbrook Center, Middleport.
Born April 6, 1925, in Rochester, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Freda Stobart Bentz.
She is survived by children Ruthie Shuler, William Thorla and Robert Thorla.
Services will be held Friday, 11 a.m., at Cremeens Funeral Home, Racine. Burial will be in Letart Falls Cemetery.
