LOGAN -- Ralph March, 81, of Dunnellon, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Timber Ridge Rehabilitation Center in Ocala, Fla. He was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Charleston, W.Va.
The service will be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Roberts Funeral Home in Logan. Burial will be in the Osborne family Cemetery, Washington Twp., Hocking County.

Rosalie Swartz Swank
Died: Thursday, December 19, 2002
Age: 86
NELSONVILLE -- Rosalie Swartz Swank, 86, of Nelsonville, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, while she was a resident of Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
She was born July 4, 1916, in Somerset County, Pa., and was a longtime resident of Canal Winchester. She was the daughter of the late William E. and Mary M. Swartz.
She attended David's Lutheran Church in Canal Winchester and Nelsonville Wesleyan Church. She previously worked for 25 years at City National Bank, Columbus.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine (Jim) Bean of Columbus, Shelby (Ron) Dupler) of Nelsonville and Charlotte (Roger) McDaniel of Nelsonville; a son, William Lawrence Swank Jr. of Nelsonville; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Harry Swartz of Lancaster and a sister, Mary Alice (Rossy) Maddy of Canal Winchester.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Lawrence Swank Sr.; brothers Billy, Earl and Charles; an infant grandson, Baby Boy Bean; and a granddaughter, Christy Dupler.
Services will be Saturday at noon at Warren-Brown Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with Pastor Steve Dupler and Pastor Mark Dupler officiating. Burial will be in Betzer Cemetery, Carroll.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

R.A. "Andy" Tanler
Died: Thursday, December 19, 2002
Age: 79
GLOUSTER -- Word has been received of the death of R.A. "Andy" Tanler, 79, of Westerville, formerly of Glouster.
He was retired from JC Penney Insurance Co., and was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Jacksonville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
He was preceded in death by a son, Scott; and a granddaughter, Brittany.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty; sons Michael and Pat (Vicky) Tanler of Westerville; grandchildren Shawn, Tracy, Brian, Brandi and Breanna; a great-granddaughter, Chloe; a sister, Arlene Roland of John Day, Ore.; a brother, Louis (Beulah) Durst of Portland, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Services will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Moreland Funeral Home, 55 E. Schrock Road, Westerville, with the Rev. David Trout officiating. Private interment will be in Otterbein Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from noon to 2 p.m.

Betty L. Young

Age: 71
LONG BOTTOM -- Betty L. Young, 71, of Long Bottom, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Columbus.
Born May 30, 1931, in Pleasant Corners, she was the daughter of the late Ted and Mabel Wallace Hite.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth B. Young; and three sons, Steve, Jimmie and Bruce Young.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Fisher Funeral Home, Pomeroy. Burial will be in Sandhill Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
George Horner
Died: Wednesday, December 18, 2002
Age: 89
TUPPERS PLAINS -- George Horner, 89, of Tuppers Plains, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va.
He was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Walker, W.Va., son of the late William and Lulu Minnie Duty Horner. He was retired from Johns-Manville Co. as a machine operator.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, George E. and Judy Horner of Tuppers Plains; a daughter and son-in-law, Gracie and Oscar Causey of Coolville; two stepdaughters, Jean Peters and Lelah Blake; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. A special thanks to his caregiver, Shirley Jones.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Fluta Irene Galloway Horner; his second wife, Pauline Horner; a great-grandson, Barry Theiss; five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at White-Schwarzel Funeral Home, Coolville. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery, Walker, W.Va.

Alva Shifflet
Died: Wednesday, December 18, 2002
Age: 96
TRIMBLE -- The Rev. Alva Shifflet, 96, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at his home in Canton.
Born in Vinton County, he was the son of the late John and Sarah Gilmore Shifflet.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Lillie McGinnis Shifflet; and children Lenore and Alva Jr.
He is survived by children Mildred West, Katie Smith, Lucille Rote, Arron Shifflet and Lillian McCarty, all of Canton; and Marion Shifflet of Florida.
He also was preceded in death by a twin brother, Albert; brothers Jim Thacker, and Joe, Clarence, Ira and Theodore Shifflet; and a twin sister and brother, Josephine Shifflet Napper and George Shifflet.
He was a former mayor of Trimble, where he lived for many years. He had been in charge of five churches and performed many marriages in this area. He worked at No. 255 coal mine for 27 years and retired from Ford Motor Co. in Canton.
He was the author of "The Harvest Grain," and gave away most of the 3,000 copies that had been printed. If interested in a free copy, call 767-2812.

Thomas G. Wartinger
Died: Tuesday, December 17, 2002
ATHENS -- Thomas G. Wartinger, 38, of Athens, loving husband and father, went to his heavenly reward early Tuesday morning, Dec. 17, 2002, at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus.
Born in Miamisburg, he was the son of the late Richard C. and Joyce I. Wartinger. A resident of Athens since 1984, Tom was a technician for Time Warner Cable and an active parishioner and Eucharist minister at Christ the King Catholic Church of Athens.
Tom is survived by his devoted wife, Herbi Wartinger; a son, Connor Rogers Wartinger; his mother, Maureen Rogers of Ann Arbor, Mich.; sisters Sandra (William) Hibner of Vandalia, Debra (Paul) Dillon of Lexington, Ky., and Maria Wartinger of Miamisburg; brothers Chris Wartinger of Windhall, Vt., and Gregory (Jean) Wartinger of Miamisburg; mother- and father-in-law Brenda and Dennis Baker of Cincinnati; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
A friend of Bill W., Tom is also survived by a community of loving friends. An inspiration to all, Tom lived a life of gratitude and his friendship was a blessing to all who knew him.
Friends may call at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., where the Vigil for the Deceased will be said at 7:30 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church by Father Marty Holler, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Margaret "Peg" Bentley
Died: Monday, December 16, 2002
Age: 82
NELSONVILLE -- Margaret "Peg" Bentley, 82, of Nelsonville, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born Sept. 8, 1920, in Athens County, she was the daughter of the late Ollie and Rena Belle Robinette Rogers. She was the widow of Gerald Bentley.
Mrs. Bentley was retired from Wm. Brooks Shoe Co. and was a member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by a daughter, Peggy Ann Bentley, and son, Larry Lee (Zita) Bentley, both of Nelsonville; three grandchildren, Debbie Riffe of Columbus, Mike (Lori) Bentley of Rowlett, Texas, and David (Sarah) Bentley of Antioch, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Ball.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Souers-Cardaras Funeral Home, Nelsonville, with Elder Gerald Wade officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
