Anna Penrod
Died: Sunday, January 27, 2002
McARTHUR -- Anna Penrod, 88, of Waverly, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Bristol Convalescent Center, Waverly.
Born Dec. 8, 1913, in Elk Twp., Vinton County, she was the daughter of the late Howard J. and Grace Rosser Penrod. She was a retired secretary for Columbus City Schools with 19 years of service, was a 1931 graduate of McArthur High School and a member of North Broadway United Methodist Church in Columbus.
She is survived by brothers Charles R. Penrod of Columbus and Larry Dale (Rowena) Penrod of Albany; sisters Ruth Penrod of Waverly, and Leonetta Tewksbury and Esther Reynolds of McArthur; and a sister-in-law, Marie Penrod of McArthur.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sylvester and Melvin Penrod.
Services will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at Garrett Funeral Home, McArthur, with the Rev. Walter Goble officiating. Burial will be in Putnam Chapel Cemetery.

Mabel Murdoch
Died: Saturday, January 26, 2002
HAMDEN -- Mabel Martin Murdoch, 105 years, 11 months and 12 days, of Hamden, passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002 at Huston Nursing Home, Hamden.
Born Feb. 14, 1896. in South Webster, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Etta Carmichael Martin. She was the oldest living resident of Vinton County, and she devoted her life to her children and her home. She was a member of Hamden United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Dixon of Hamden; three grandsons, Dr. Evan W. (Kathleen) Dixon of West Liberty, Brent L. Dixon of Hamden and David W. Murdoch of Elkins, W.Va.; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leverette M. Murdoch, on Feb. 18, 1964; a son, Rexford (Nadine) Murdoch; a son-in-law, Loyd Willis Dixon; a grandson, Duane Murdoch; and seven brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Hamden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Burchett officiating. Burial will be in Hamden Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before Monday's service.

Edith O'Nail
Died: Friday, January 25, 2002
GLOUSTER -- Edith L. O'Nail, 87, of Glouster, formerly of Murray City, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Doctors Hospital of Nelsonville.
Born Jan. 26, 1914, in Murray City, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Dora Loper Canter.
She was the former owner/operator of a restaurant in Murray City and was a member of Murray City Wesleyan Church.
She is survived by sons Jim O'Nail of Glouster, Ed (Janet) O'Nail of New Lexington and Jerry (Linda) O'Nail of Murray City; daughters Gloria Handa of Murray City and Jane Herbst of Glouster; grandchildren Kathy Lanning, Eddie O'Nail, Lori Huff, Brent Handa, Carla Andrews, Sherry Boston, Bill Herbst, David Herbst, Sharon Angle, Cheryl Smith, Ricky O'Nail and Richard O'Nail; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and sisters Margaret Decker of Nelsonville and Thelma Norman of Dayton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence O'Nail, who passed away on April 11, 1986; and brothers Donald and Gene Canter.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Murray City, with Pastor Paul Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.

Mae Sharpe
Died: Friday, January 25, 2002
ATHENS -- Mae Sharpe, 93, of Athens, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at her home after an extended illness.
Born March 24, 1908, in Rosedale, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Major and Katherine Cottrill Stover.
She is survived by eight children, Margaret (Ray) Thompson of Delaware, Charles F. (Wilda) Sharpe of Shade, Wilfred (Opal) Sharpe, Mildred (Earl) Haines, Mary (Charles) Burleigh, Judy McDonald and Robert Sharpe, all of Athens, and Effie Bledsoe of South Venice, Fla.
She was blessed with 27 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, 33 great-great-grandchildren, and a special friend, John Durfee of The Plains.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Sharpe, in 1982; a daughter, Jean Rosser; three infant children; her stepmother, Rosanne Stover; a brother, Earl; a sister, Icy; and three half-sisters, two half-brothers, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Hughes-Moquin Funeral Home, Athens, with the Rev. David Roach officiating. Burial will be in Athens Memory Gardens.

Michael Smith
Died: Thursday, January 24, 2002
ATHENS -- Michael J. Smith was 50 years, eight months and 23 days when he passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at his residence in Orient.
Michael worked for the State of Ohio for 22 years in the Rehabilitation Service Commission as an inventory control specialist. He was a 1970 graduate of Pleasant View High School.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Lavon; grandparents, Jams A. and Pearl K. Linscott Betz, Arthur E. and Flora Smith.
He is survived by a son, Michael Tyler Smith of Westerville; parents Calvin E. and Betty L. Betz Smith of Orient; brothers Larry E. (Marie) of Columbus, and James A. (Rhonda) of Grove City; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held Sunday, 2 p.m., at Miller Funeral Home, 2697 Columbus St., Grove City, with Pastor Karen James officiating. Interment will be held Monday, at 1 p.m., at Hooper Ridge Cemetery in Athens County.

Leland Brown
Died: Wednesday, January 23, 2002
MIDDLEPORT -- Leland E. Brown, 89, of Middleport, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis.
Born May 12, 1912, in Meigs County, he was the son of the late Wilbur Dallas and Violet Kennedy Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Grate Brown; and a son, Leland Brown.
Services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m., at Fisher Funeral Home in Middleport. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Middleport.

Kathleen Rutter
Died: Monday, January 21, 2002
MILLFIELD -- Kathleen Rutter, 72, of Millfield, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Hickory Creek Nursing Center, The Plains.
Born May 18, 1929, in Nicholas County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Crosskey Sheets. She is survived by her husband, Earl C. Rutter.
No services will be held and her body will be cremated. Arrangements are by Bigony-Jordan Funeral Home, Albany.
Lucille Smith
Died: Tuesday, May 6, 2003
Age: 82
ATHENS -- Lucille Smith, 82, a longtime resident of Athens, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Fairhaven Nursing Home in Birmingham, Ala.
Born Sept. 4, 1920, in The Plains. She graduated from The Plains High School. During her life in Athens, she was an associate of and a buyer for Foster's Department Store. She served as executive director of the Athens County Chapter of The American Red Cross for many years. After her retirement in 1985, she and her husband, Kermit, served for three years with Youth With A Mission International in Kona, Hawaii. She then lived in Sun City Center, Fla., and Boone, N.C., before moving to Birmingham a year ago.
In addition to her parents, Clarence and Forrest MacDonald, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Kermit Smith, also an Athens native; and a sister, Evelyn McGraner of Cambridge.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Darel and Judy Hull of Birmingham; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Ruth Smith of Zionville, N.C.; a grandson, Scott Hull, and wife, Day, of Birmingham; a granddaughter, Christina Hill, and her husband, of Aurora, Ill.; a grandson, Ryan Smith of Zionville; and a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Hull of Birmingham. She has two surviving sisters, Juanita Potts of Athens and LaDonna Sandborn of Canal Winchester.
Friends and family are asked to celebrate Lucy's life through remembrance of the many lives she touched with her kindness, commitment to the community, her many acts of charity and her strong faith in God.
John W. Blaettnar

Age: 70
POMEROY -- John W. Blaettnar, 70, of Pomeroy, died Monday, May 5, 2003, in Pomeroy.
Born Nov. 18, 1932, in Pomeroy, he was the son of Margaret E. Blaettnar of Pomeroy and the late Fred S. Blaettnar. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Satterfield Blaettner, and children Elizabeth Golowenski, Mary Stewart, Catherine Johnson and Frederick "Rick" Blaettnar.
Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at Trinity Church, Pomeroy.
